As patron of the British Benevolent Fund of Madrid it gives me great

pleasure to welcome you all to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes and

the BBF’s annual fundraising event. I would particularly like to thank

the musicians who have given their time to come down from London

to be with us as well as our event sponsors Mahou and Bodegas Matue

for their generosity in supporting this event.

The BBF has been providing relief and assistance for over 90 years to

those British and related citizens in the Madrid area, and

exceptionally elsewhere in Spain, who have found themselves in

difficult circumstances and who have no other recourse. In many

cases the BBF has been able to offer comfort, hope and assistance in

what are frequently trying and difficult times and where a friendly

visit by a BBF volunteer can make all the difference. The BBF

provides the safety net for those individuals who have nowhere else to

turn. It is the charity of last resort.

The present process of establishing the BBF as a legally recognised

entity will allow it to build on its valuable work and further enhance

its role within the British community here.

My best wishes for a most enjoyable evening.

British Ambassador to Spain

Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando

We are honoured to be once more in the superb surrounds of The Real

Academia de Bellas Artes. Since its founding in 1744 the Real Academia has

been one of Madrid's most important fine arts museums.

Picasso and Dali are former students of this arts academy, housed in the

18th century Goyeneche Palace. The academy's gallery (or Fine Arts

Museum) includes works by old masters such as Van Dyck and Rubens, and

drawings by Raphael and Titian. Naturally, Spanish artists are well

represented, with the highlight being magnificent works by El Greco,

Velazquez, Murillo, Ribera, and Zurbaran.

Goya has an entire room devoted to him (he's one of the academy's former

directors), and among several of his noteworthy works are his self-portrait

painted in 1815, and “The Mad House”. In total there are more than 1,500

paintings and almost 600 sculptures, ranging from the 15th century all the

way to the present.

Although not as famous as the Prado, Reina Sofia, or the Museo Thyssen-

Bornemisza, it is considered one of Spain's most important art galleries. One

of Madrid’s hidden gems!

The British Benevolent Fund of Madrid

The BBF has been in existence for over 90 years. Founded in a time when

there was little concept of universal state welfare the Fund´s primary focus

was to supply financial relief for those Britons in Madrid who had no other

means of supporting themselves. Many of the recipients of aid were

teachers and children´s governors who had no family or other support to

help them in their senior years.

Recently the fund has invested in becoming a legally recognized Association

which will allow it a more visible platform on which it can build upon the

work that it is doing in the British community.

If you would be interested in becoming involved; whether as a volunteer,

committee member or as a much valued donor please visit our website

www.britishbenevolent.org or talk to a member of the committee at the

reception after the concert. 9

Land of Hope and Glory

Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned, God make thee mightier yet! On Sov'reign brows, beloved, renowned, Once more thy crown is set. Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained, Have ruled thee well and long; By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained, Thine Empire shall be strong.

Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet, God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Thy fame is ancient as the days, As Ocean large and wide: A pride that dares, and heeds not praise, A stern and silent pride; Not that false joy that dreams content With what our sires have won; The blood a hero sire hath spent Still nerves a hero son.

Chorus

Jerusalem And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green: And was the holy Lamb of God, On England's pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here, Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold; Bring me my Arrows of desire: Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem, In England's green & pleasant Land.

Rule, Britannia! When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain:

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all.

Chorus

Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak.

Chorus

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown.

Chorus

To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine.

Chorus

The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair.

Chorus 7 7
