Fun Facts about PiAn Irrational Number
Math 9 – Mrs. Feldes
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th along with Albert Einstein’s birthday!
Fact:
Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
Pi is a constant number, meaning that for all circles of any size, Pi will be the same.
Fact:
Pi has been studied for over 4 000 years.
Before the appearance of the symbol, approximations such as
or had been
used to express the ratio.
Fact:
Who invented Pi?
William JonesLeonhard Euler
Johann Lambert
In 1706, a self‐taught Mathematics teacher, William Jones, came up with the concept of pi.
Swiss Mathematician Leonhard Euler popularized the symbol in 1737.
Johann Lambert proved pi was irrational in 1768.
Fact:
Mathematicians believe pi is statistically random.
This means that each digit 0‐9 occurs as often as any other digit and the occurrence of any digit seems unrelated to the preceding digit.

If this is true, then pi must hold all finite sequences, including lotto numbers & every birthdate of every person born & yet to be born!

At this time, Pi has been calculated to 50 trillion digits. (Record set January 2020)
Only 39 digits past the decimal point is needed to accurately calculate the spherical volume of our entire universe.
