Honoring Veterans

Veteran’s Day, November 11:

All Church Lunch!

It’s hard to believe that it’s November already. I wasn’t ready to admit that the “season” is upon us, but I was shocked into that reality as I watched our confirmation kids handing out Thanksgiving Bags to the congregation as we exited the Sanctuary this past Sunday morning. I suppose that once we know that the holiday season is upon us it just makes time go even faster. I have reflected on the word ‘holiday’ over the past few days. So much of the time it becomes a word that is synonymous with family, time off, over eating, etc… The word really comes from two words. The two words are ‘holy’ and ‘day’ so together it is really “holyday.” This old word recognizes that the things we celebrate are historically holy in nature and have something — everything — to do with God and our relationship with the “holy.” I know that this time of year tends towards the busy. Perfect recipes, perfect meals, perfect re–creations of perfect moments past, and shopping so that there can be perfect presents, perfect wrappings, and perfect photos of practically perfect kids. In the midst of all of that, what are you doing to keep the “holy” in holiday? One of the conversations that we have had as a staff is about how frantic things get here at the church at this time of year. For the past few weeks, we have spent an hour each week together as a staff reading a book, praying and meeting to discuss what we have read and prayed about. I have been amazed at two things. First, how different this has been for us a staff. It really took some getting used to. But further, I think that it has helped us keep perspective on who we are as Christians and what we do together in our work.

I hope that you are connecting in worship and in either Sunday school or a small group because it is precisely these activities that help us to keep things in perspective and keep the “holy” in holiday. I’ll see you on Sunday.

Remember Our Saints November 4All Saints is the

celebration of all persons who have departed this life and gone on to the glory of everlasting life.

Each year on the first Sunday of November, we celebrate the lives of those

members of our church who have died during the past year.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set

before us.” (Hebrews 12:1) At all morning worship

services, we will read the names of these saints and celebrate their lives with the tolling of the bell, special music, and partake in Holy Communion.

Exploring the Holidays: Faith, Family and CultureFriday, November 2 • 9:30 a.m. • FUmc Parlor • Led by Rev. Holly Dittrich

If you have been to any stores lately, the Christmas “stuff” is already coming out. Where did Thanksgiving go? How do we raise our children to understand the true gift of Jesus the Christ when they are surrounded by commercials and store aisles that communicate “buy me or your Christmas won’t be complete?” How do we create balance in the lives of our family during such a busy time of year? What new traditions might we create to promote wonder, thankfulness, generosity, and peace? Come, ready to share your struggles and your own traditions and ideas (or ones you have read about, but haven’t yet had the energy or courage to give a try!).

Saving Energy! As you may recall, FUMC

Hurst began conversations with Ideal Impact several months ago in an attempt to reduce energy costs significantly, in order to move more money into missions and ministries of our church. Most of our efforts focus on saving money on heating and cooling, as Ideal Impact estimates that this comprises 70% of our energy cost.

We have transferred our online calendar to every thermostat in the building so that heating and air conditioning only run in rooms that have events scheduled. That seems like a no brainer, but often, thermostats might get switched on manually, and then someone might forget to turn them off, meaning that heating or cooling unit would run until somebody came back to the room.

We have also standardized set–points across the campus: 73 for cooling, and 68 for heating. Primarily, this prevents one unit from heating a space while another simultaneously cools the same space. Secondly, by standardizing temperatures across campus the temperature will feel more comfortable, as there will not be drastic temperature changes from room to room. Granted, that is a mental adjustment, but it is proven to save money! In order to maintain these standardized set–points, every thermostat in the building is “locked” to prevent manually changing the temperature beyond the established set–points. It is still possible to turn on a unit in an unoccupied room for a short time if necessary.

Additionally, we have

worked to schedule church meetings in groups of rooms that use the same A/C units. This allows us to use fewer units and to use rooms that have already been cooled, instead of cooling another room unnecessarily. As we implement this plan, you may be asked to have your meeting in a different room than your usual space. This is to save money on our heating and cooling costs! Thanks for understanding.

Another step we are working on to save money is to manage our energy demand with a process called “load–rolling.” As a commercial property, the energy company can charge us not only for kw/h usage (what you pay at home), but for total demand. When the church turns on every A/C unit and light in the building on a Sunday morning, our demand for that time period increases and the energy company can charge us up to $4 per kw/h during those high demand times (you pay about $0.11 per kw/h at home)! Not only that, they can charge us 80% of that high demand cost every month — just based on the possibility that we could use that demand all at once. How does the church reduce

demand and high demand costs? We program our many thermostats to turn on units at different times, starting at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. By spreading our demand over many hours, we are able to save a lot of money on our energy costs.

How much? Our September 2012 energy bill was more than $4,000 less than our bill in September 2011! This means that if we follow Ideal Impact’s recommendations and plan for our church thoroughly, we could potentially save more than $50,000 in the next year on our energy costs. That’s $50,000 that we can then move to ministry that transforms lives.

How can you help? • If you see a light on in a

room that is empty, turn it off! • Please do not prop open

outside doors (it actually does suck the expensive air right out of the building).

Growing pains are common in a process where we are changing our practices across a very large campus. If you notice that the air is not on in your room, please notify the church office.

Thank you for helping us be good stewards of our resources.

Children’s Sunday School: NovemberToddlers, PreSchool, Kindergarten: Preschool Sunday School will continue to follow the Grow, Proclaim, Serve curriculum. Kindergarteners will learn stories from the Book of Joshua about serving and obeying God. The Three and Four-Year Old classes will study God’s Promised Land, and learn about the leadership of Joshua and his service to God. Two-Year Olds will learn Psalm 9:1, “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart.” All classes will explore a variety of activities that will help reinforce each Bible story. This month’s Preschool Leap of Faith is, “I can choose to serve and obey God.”

Grades 1–5: Testament Travels

Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz

During November, our students will learn about Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. It’s a great story and families are encouraged to read the book of Ruth together. It’s only FOUR chapters long! We will learn about Ruth’s devotion and care of Naomi and how God provided for them in their time of need. We will make bread and learn about the early food customs of Biblical times, create art with wheat, which Ruth gathered in Boaz’s field, and participate in the story through movies, acting, and games.

Thank you, Holli Hensen!Holli Henson, who has been working with our preschool ministries, has decided to focus her time and energy on her teaching career. We are thankful for the love and energy she has for young children and wish her well!

For the immediate future, please direct any preschool ministry needs to Rev. Holly Dittrich.

Don’t forget to check in with Shelby!Parents, please remember to check your children in (using any Shelby station) for all the activities they will be attending on Sunday morning (Sunday School, Wee Worship, Children’s Chapel, Children’s Choirs, etc.).

We now have a fifth Shelby Station in the Fellowship Hall so you can register children during Coffee Fellowship.

Thank you for being a part of this safety innovation!

Mission Opportunities for Children and Families

Thanksgiving Cards: Due November 11Our church will feed more than 1,200

families through our Thanksgiving Bag Mission. It is our goal for each family to receive a handmade card from a child. Children’s Sunday School classes will be participating, but if you would like to work on this project as a family, feel free to make cards and bring them to your child’s Sunday School class on Sundays through November 11. Please do not put any last names on the cards. Including a prayer or blessing in the card is suggested.

Shoe Boxes for Kids: Due December 9Children’s Ministries is again sponsoring

Shoe Boxes for Kids. This is a great chance for our kids to help less–fortunate local children celebrate the joy of Christmas. Boxes will be distributed by the Hurst Police Department.

Find an empty shoe box and wrap it with Christmas paper (wrap the lid separately). Decide whether your gift is for a boy or girl, and choose an age category: (2–4), (5–7), (8–9), or (10–14). Attach a gift label with this information. Fill your shoe box with gifts such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy, books, socks, or any other small items. Bring your filled box to the atrium by December 9.

All are welcome to participate. Take your children and let them fill the box! Make it a family outing — see how much you can fit in the box. What a great way to teach children the importance and fun of giving to others!
