It was also one of the first technical colleges to appoint a member of staff responsible for student welfare. Today this team includes Advice and Guidance, Student Finance; the counselling service; an on-site nurse; childcare; the security staff; and specialist support for students who are or have been in care.

In the first academic year there were 789 students, with subjects split into the three departments of Building, Science and General Education.

ewell county technical college changed its name to nescot in 1975, and in 1988 the college acquired the former epsom High school.

Nescot has played host to artists including Queen, The Beatles, Genesis, Black Sabbath and Elvis Costello. In 1977 the college served as a psychiatric hospital when Shepperton Studios spent a day filming scenes for The Revenge of the Pink Panther. The movie showed Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau running through the distinctive glass walkways dressed as a woman.

Nescot began life as Ewell County Technical College, with the first students beginning courses in September 1953 and the establishment being formally opened the following March.

The site was said to have been the largest arable field in England, and the college cost £250,000 to build.

The college was recognised as a pioneer in ‘liberal education’. By the mid-1960s students spent Wednesday afternoons taking supplementary courses from sailing to folk dancing.

Nescot has been providing high-quality Further and Higher Education to the Ewell and Epsom community for 60 years. In order to continue meeting the needs of the local economy and to build on our 2010 Ofsted classification as Outstanding in a number of areas, we need to improve our facilities.

In order to fund these improvements, we are proposing to develop our Animal Care Unit to provide 79 terraced and semi-detached houses, a retirement care village with 120 units, and housing for 600 students. Animal Care facilities will be moved to the other side of the campus, and if planning permission is granted building work will start next year.

Improvements to Nescot will include a skills park with a café and space for meetings, better access across the whole campus for people with disabilities, teaching space for osteopathy and health and beauty courses, and staff offices.

For a detailed look at the plans, visit our website at www.nescot.ac.uk.

In August 2013 a consortium led by Nescot opened Saudi Arabia’s first-ever women-only technical college.

The institution, called the Nescot Consortium Jeddah Female College of Excellence, is offering courses in IT, Business Administration, Beauty, Fashion and Hair Design to up to 2,000 students.

Nescot is leading on the £75 million contract, with Highbury College in Portsmouth, Burton and South Derbyshire College, the University of Hull and Birmingham City University also members of the consortium.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for The Nescot Consortium, and we are all incredibly excited about the impact this college will have,” said Nescot Principal Sunaina Mann.

“As the three FE colleges managing the project have female CEOs and Principals we are passionate about this opportunity, because it will provide women across the city of Jeddah with the chance to gain vocational qualifications that will help them secure their rightful place within the Saudi workforce.”

“the reed NcFe centre has been extremely helpful to me in finding a job and giving me advice. i first went to the centre in october 2012, and the employment Broker helped me work on my cV. at first i wasn’t sure what kind of job i wanted, because i’m shy. the Broker helped me narrow down my search until i found something i would feel comfortable and confident with, and then they recommended some websites to use and we started looking for vacancies together. the Broker explained how my shyness might come across in an interview, and gave me tips on how to appear more confident. she also gave me interview questions to practice, and then we had

a practice session and she gave me some feedback.

a representative from a small publishing company then visited the reed NcFe centre looking for someone to do data entry for a business directory. the Broker thought it would be a great opportunity for me and told the employer about me. i thought the job sounded like a great opportunity, and exactly what i’d been looking for. i was invited to an interview and then offered the job, to start in January 2013. the support from staff at the reed NcFe centre was a great help to me throughout the process, and it was with their help that i got the job.”

WHat Will i Be aBle to do WHen i’m not in class?one of the best things about becoming a full-time student at Nescot is having the chance to get involved in activities, trips, sport – and even having a say in how the college works through our student Voice forums.

enricHment programmeenrichment at Nescot is an opportunity to meet other students around the college, make a difference to someone else’s life and have fun at the same time. every student under 19 participates in on-course enrichment each year as part of their programme of study. all students also have the opportunity to be involved in cross-college enrichment, such as diwali and comic relief etc, which introduces you to other aspects of your course and highlights other skills that you might have. as part of your enrichment programme you can also be involved in community

projects, volunteering, mentoring other students as well as taking part in charity events.

HaVing a Voice, Being Heard, getting inVolVedthere are lots of opportunities to get involved and make a difference at Nescot. an example of how you can have your say is through ‘student Voice’. each tutor group elects one or more students to represent their views at student Voice meetings. every term there is a meeting for all the representatives with the principal and other senior staff so that you can tell them your views about your course and your experience of being a student at Nescot. every query raised is answered and feedback responses are available on Weblearn, in tutor meetings, and are published on large posters around the college.

“There’s so much to get involved in at Nescot. I am going to be a peer mentor to LeveLevel 1 Business students who are hoping to progress to Level 2. I’m looking forward to helping them but it will also give me a chance to develop management, leadership and motivational skills that will add to my CV. “

part-time, adult and HigHer education coursesWhile you may think of Further education colleges, like Nescot, as being all about trades and vocational studies, we have also been offering more academic courses and part-time leisure courses for over 40 years. our courses range from short courses, with no formal entry requirements, to full masters degrees…

your main course

each entry in this course guide will help you decide whether the course is the right one for you. you can call us to ask further questions or for a more detailed course sheet. you can also get these from our website – www.nescot.ac.uk

When choosing your course, remember to ask yourself:

• Do I want to go on to Higher education or employment after this course?

• How will this course help me achieve that goal?

if you have decided on a career, you can look at courses that are most directly related to it.

NVQ, Btec First and National diploma courses are called vocational courses and are usually linked to particular occupations.

Vocational courses can also provide a stepping stone to Higher education at Nescot or at another college or university.

students on level 3 courses at Nescot who meet the entry requirements and have a satisfactory reference will be guaranteed a place on a Nescot Foundation degree, HNd or Ba/ Bsc (Hons) programme, if a relevant course is available.

functional sKillsas well as the subject you have chosen to study, you will undertake a programme of Functional skills if you do not have a Gcse grade c in maths and english. these are the english and maths skills that employers have stated they require.

all full-time students take assessments in these skills during the first few weeks of term. the results of these inform our planning and teaching, which help you succeed. Functional skills are just one of the ways that Nescot can help you develop the individual skills that will give you confidence in life and the work place.

if you are on a Foundation programme, you will study and practice both skills. at level 2 you will work on the most appropriate skill. if you do not have Gcse grade c or above in english or maths, you may have the opportunity to re-sit your Gcse.

nescot apprenticesHips in tHe neWsNescot it apprentice chris doherty came close to winning one of the top awards at the National apprenticeship & training london regional awards, held at city Hall on the 25th september 2012. chris was highly commended in the Higher apprentice of the year category and was narrowly beaten to the top award by Bt apprentice, James mellor.

Vic Grimes, National apprenticeship divisional director for london and the south east, said: “this year’s awards were a terrific showcase of the outstanding wealth of talent that we have across london. Given the volume and high calibre of entries we received, i’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate chris doherty for this superb achievement.”

employed by aVis software, a software development house based in sutton, chris is involved in consulting with clients to design, develop, test and implement new software. He has grown the company’s web based work from zero to around 20% of the business.

chris believes his apprenticeship has given him he experience employers look for. His long term goal is to complete a masters degree with the ambition to one day develop defence software for the Government.

“I didn’t really enjoy school and I’d assumed college would be the same, but it’s totally different at Nescot and I’m really enjoying my course. At the start of the academic year I gave my CV to the apprenticeship team and they helped me find a job. Now I do one day a week at college and the rest working as a bricklayer.”

an epic experience at london fasHion WeeKadam reed is well known in the hairdressing industry for styling the hair of many of the best-known stars including, Noel Gallagher, ellie Golding and lady Gaga. He is also known for his television and film work, including ‘the X Factor’ and ‘sex in the city’ – and last year adam inspired our Nescot hairdressing students when he told them about the amazing opportunities that he has experienced in his career.

adam offered two students the opportunity to work with him at the london Fashion Week in February 2013. this unbelievable opportunity has enabled two students, lizzie roberts and louise Bushnell, to help adam and paul percival (adam’s business partner) in styling models’ hair for the launch of the House of Holland 2013 collection.

adam looked after the students fantastically, allowing them to have a real taste of the fashion industry up close. louise and lizzie were blown away by the experience, and louise said: ‘It was amazing, we had such a great time, we got to speak to so many people, we were working on the models and everything... it has made me want to do this more as a career. We got given Percy and Reed products to take home and 2 sets of styling tongs that they used on the models. People from magazines got speaking to us and took pictures of me and Lizzie working with the models and Adam. Such an epic experience! Would love to do it again any time! We went home very very happy.”

“I wanted to study a BTEC because you get a far better understanding in one subject, which I think prepares you much better for university and work. There’s a lot of emphasis on learning skills like research, teamwork and communication, which I don’t think you develop when you study A-Levels.

On my course I’ve learnt a lot about how different areas and theories connect. For example, we’ve studied Information Systems and E-Commerce, but they’re always related back to other elements of the course. The teaching is very interactive too, and the tutors are very good at explaining.

one of my favourite parts of the course at Nescot was our cookery qualification, which is useful when you’re looking for work. We do three placements as part of the course, and i think working two days a week is a good preparation for finishing the course and working full-time rather than going from a-levels straight into a job. i have already got a full-time job for when i finish the course, working in a day nursery for two to five-year-olds, and i got that job through one of the placements i did on the course.

‘We’re looking for the whole package,’ said early years tutor Janet graham, ‘not just getting a*s, but taking that knowledge out on work placements and applying it – doing the job well,’ she said.

for emma Benstead, 17, from tadworth, who was named student of the year in her group, it was the reaction of her family that really helped the news to sink in.

fellow student of the year winner gemma Wiltshire, 17, from sutton, was also thrilled to be presented with her award by her tutor.

‘i think i was shocked and pleased at the same time,’ she said.

creative media takes home the medalscongratulations to the two groups of Nescot media students who won Gold and Bronze medals at this year’s Worldskills uK Finals held in Birmingham at the Nec in November.

the competitions were part of the skills show, which honours the most talented apprentices, students and employers. more than 500 entrants took part in 61 Worldskills uK National competitions in skills ranging from aeronautical engineering to landscape Gardening. competitors secured their places in the finals after winning regional heats. the competitors battled it out to win Gold, silver and Bronze and ultimately be named the ‘best of the best’ in the uK at their chosen skill.

the Nescot media students won the moving image category, which required them to produce news coverage of the three days of the skills show. they were required to produce a four-minute news package each day, researching stories, filming the event and finding appropriate guests to interview, before heading back to cut the package together by 5pm.

this is the second year running that Nescot media students have taken Gold at the uK Finals. craig catlow, Head of department for creative media at Nescot said: “We are very proud of our learners as they excelled themselves. the winning team were streets ahead of the competition according to the judges, who said that the professional manner in which they worked was remarkable for people of their age”.

theo paphitis, patron of the skills show, said: “congratulations to the winners of this year’s Worldskills uK National competition Finals. there has been some fantastic work produced and i hope this will show everyone how apprenticeships and vocational training can lead to worthwhile and valuable careers.”

the learning curve is really steep – we’ve gone from making not-very-good videos to making industry-quality films that we’re really proud of...

“i was offered a place at the Brit school, but when i came to Nescot for my audition and interview i felt so welcome and at home in the performing arts department that i decided to come here instead.

at school i loved dance, but here you’re encouraged not to pigeonhole yourself but to work across all three disciplines, so my acting and music skills are much stronger now. my favourite part of the year so far has been our Final major performance unit, where i performed in Beautiful Burnout. i was very nervous beforehand, but the staff helped me to use the nerves to improve my performance. We’re treated as a professional theatre company, and i think that shows in our performances.

another thing i love about Nescot is that you have the opportunity to learn technical skills. i was allowed to help out with the staging of the final year group’s production of We lost elijah this year, which was amazing. clair

prime does all our lighting and staging, and she’s a professional technician so it’s great to have someone with that kind of experience in the department to learn from.

outside of college i teach dance, and the tutors at Nescot have been really supportive of that, and let me work with them on choreographing sections of routines. i also played Handball for england, but i stopped in order to concentrate on my Btec. in our department we’re like a family – we perform as a team, so we have to work as a team to make our shows better. the tutors get to know all the students and treat them as individuals and not numbers – for example, Gavin maxwell has given up a lot of his time to help me think about what kind of career would suit me and how i could get there.”

Cameron Muir

First Year Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts

i’ve learned to be more confident. the department is called up stage right (usr) and we actually feel like we’re working for a company rather than being at college.

this year:

We performed We lost elijah at Nescot and at Greenwich theatre as part the National theatre connections programme;

performed Beautiful Burnout, a piece of physical theatre; and

Gave an open-air performance called plausible deniability at reigate Fort

A collaboration between Nescot’s Preparation for Life and Work department (PfLaW) and a charity supporting youngsters with autism has seen changes to the provision for people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) announced during the Queen’s speech to Parliament recently The national College Inclusion Charter was launched, and Nescot had a visit from Dr Alexa Posny, Assistant Secretary of State for Education in the US.

The Finished at School campaign was launched by the charity Ambitious About Autism to address the issues faced by many autistic school leavers, who are unable to access education or employment after their statement of Special Educational Needs ends when they reach the age of 16.

The campaign came to the attention of Lynn Reddick, Head of the PfLaW department, whose work with learning disabled youngsters has seen her receive a Star Award and an invitation to consult at 10 Downing Street to meet former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“When you realise that just one in four youngsters with autism access any sort of education after finishing

school you can see just how difficult the situation is,” Lynn said. “They are left with no goals, ambition or hope of escaping dependency on benefits or care.”

The campaign received a boost when the commitment was made in the Queen’s speech to Parliament to extend the legal right to educational support up to the age of 25 for young disabled people.

The Charter launch on Monday May 14 by Further Education Minister John Hayes at the Ambitious About Autism Annual Lecture was also attended by US Assistant Secretary of State for Education Dr Alexa Posny.

The following day a contingent of US education officials, college principals and directors accompanied Dr Posny to Nescot to see what was happening on the ground that has such a positive effect on outcomes for students with special educational needs.

While Dr Posny was pleased to see courses for youngsters with disabilities being offered in a mainstream local college, it was the independence and employment-focused approach which had the most impact on the visitors.

Asked if there was anything she had seen on her visit to Britain which would inform her work in the US she said:

“Absolutely. As part of our visit to Nescot, the depth and breadth of the career programmes offered to students with autism was awesome. It included the building of a mini mall, on-the-job training in upholstery work, running cafes, developing and selling pottery and so much more. This is what is needed – a wide breadth of work options for all students. Three students will become designers of video games and they talked about the market research in which they have become involved. I was humbled by their knowledge, intensity and most importantly, their complete engagement.”

It is this potential which drives the work of Lynn and her team. Lynn’s students go on to find employment in hospitality, horticulture and retail and many other areas where their skills are extremely valued. The contrast between these youngsters, with careers, social lives and prospects, and the fate of those not lucky enough to live near a college offering suitable training is unacceptable to the team at Nescot.

in the workplace by Job coaches from employability and a Nescot tutor.

you will be based in college for one day a week to complete the theory units on the course and to run an enterprise activity where you will run a small business on the college campus. you will spend two days a week at work. you will have a tutorial in your group at the end of each day to help with any issues that might occur at work.

“i’ve done level 1, 2 and 3 Btecs at Nescot, and next year i’m starting the Higher National diploma (HNd). i love this college, i feel a completely different person to when i arrived here. i was so shy and i had no self-confidence, but now i’m really happy.

i’ve wanted to join the police ever since i can remember, and due to this course i’m now a special constable in the metropolitan police service. i volunteer at least four shifts a month, which fits around my college work. once i’ve finished the HNd i hope to become a full-time police constable, and my dream is to be a dog-handler.”

“i want to become a pe teacher, so studying this course is a great stepping stone to university. i’m hoping to go to st mary’s university college in twickenham to study sport science. i play in the midfield for cheam rangers Fc, which i love. there’s obviously far fewer females in sport, which is a shame, and i think you’re treated differently. i’ve been inspired by the female teachers i’ve had, so i’d like to go on and inspire the girls that i teach in the future to take up sport and be healthy and active.

i went to cheam High school, and i thought about staying on there to do a-levels but i wanted to do one specialised course rather than studying a few different courses i was less interested in. i don’t enjoy exams, and one good thing about Btecs is that you do

coursework. it’s also been good to be somewhere new and meet a lot of new people with similar interests to you.

my favourite part of the course so far was the anatomy unit, and the work experience we did before christmas. i worked in a leisure centre teaching children, which was great experience for the future. the staff here have been fantastic, and they know the subject so well. i’m looking forward to continuing the course next year, because the units sound really interesting. i’d definitely recommend Nescot to anyone thinking about studying sport.”

“studying at Nescot has been a great experience, and i’m so glad i chose this college. i was thinking about staying on at school, but when i read about the travel and tourism course here it seemed a perfect fit.

i’ve wanted to become cabin crew for as long as i can remember, and i feel studying here has really helped to prepare me. the tutor who taught us the cabin crew module used to work for Virgin airlines and the room we were taught in is set up like a plane, with facilities like proper seats and a trolley. you learn better that way rather than just reading from a book.

We do work placements as part of the course in the second year, and i went to Jersey airport. i had an insight into different parts of airport management, from the check-in desk to boarding planes and welcoming customers and thinking about security, but the experience of

being away from home and meeting lots of people was also really valuable.

coming to college is a very different experience to staying on at school, and i think it prepares you better for the workplace. you’re treated like an adult, and everyone is friendly and open-minded. i’m gay, and i have always felt very well supported and never judged.

the units are varied, from business to rural tourism and responsible travel, so there’s something for everyone. the work has been challenging and there’s a lot of work, but the tutors selina, Nicole, Jen, mat, Naomi and Vykke are always ready to give anyone extra help they need. i couldn’t have asked for more, and i would recommend this course at Nescot to anyone.”
