CHARLES WRIGHT ACADEMY 3F u l l S t e a m A h e a d

Greetings from the head of school

Tonight, we celebrate Tarriers moving forward. As Head of School, I see how our community of faculty, staff, families, and friends make Charles Wright an excellent place to be a student. Because of you, students are empowered to be explorers and innovators who navigate the future with confidence, just as our iconic mascot did in the 19th century as they brought the railroad to the Pacific Northwest. The Tarrier symbolizes perseverance to push the boundaries of what is possible, and that is what we are here to do tonight for our students.

When you look around, you will see the work of the dedicated volunteers who transformed the Dome into a grand terminal, complete with a central dining hall, and stations for building community — all embellished with Tarrier pride. Please join me in thanking them for hosting a memorable evening. This group lent their time, talents, and treasures to procure items, gifts, sponsorships, and partnerships for us to invest in the student experience.

Academic challenge and excellence is our commitment. It is our legacy

and the first of our core values in pursuit of student success. This year’s Fund-A-Need provides the indoor physical framework for students to achieve their best. Whether it is an updated learning space, classroom, hallway, or athletic facility, Tarriers of all ages have spent the year crafting an innovative vision for what indoor updates will allow them to feel more welcomed and engaged. We have the opportunity to bring their vision to life tonight.

I look forward to seeing everyone on board for an exciting evening, Full Steam Ahead! Welcome to our 33rd annual Spirit Auction!

Spirit Auction 20204

2020 LeadershipWelcome

from the 2020 auction leadership committee

Welcome to Full Steam Ahead! Thank you for joining us in celebrating our CWA community at our largest event of the year. The CWA mission statement, “To inspire active, joyful learning while nurturing and challenging our students to develop the character, creativity, and skills to successfully navigate the future with confidence,” inspired our committee to celebrate our past as we spring forward “Full Steam Ahead” into our future.

CWA Tarriers are preparing to launch into the 21st century with just as much perseverance and excellence as the Tarriers of the 19th century. The Tarrier who once laid 7,000 miles of track inspires the CWA Tarrier who learns on our 107-acre campus and out in the community. Tarriers get things done.

So this evening, CWA parents, guardians, alumni, trustees and friends will come together for a great evening of entertainment, dining, and bidding on premium auction items

in support of helping our school and students “Navigate the Future with Confidence!” We have worked hard to offer you amazing experiences and excursions, as well as a Fund-A-Need that will inspire “Active, Joyful Learning” throughout our campus.

So, “All Aboard!” Get ready to raise your paddle high and raise it often. Your generous contributions tonight will make a lasting impact on students and faculty.

Thank you to our generous sponsors, parent volunteers, and staff who have worked tirelessly to make this evening a celebration of community and our school. We could not have done this without you!

Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank all of you for being a part of this vibrant community. We would not be here without your love and support.

Cassandra Will, Jessica Corddry, Ellen Middleton, Liz Snyder, and Chiarina Iregui.

15 FUND-A-NEED

Imagine this moment:A student rushes into a building on our beautiful campus. It’s the Upper School commons, or Lower School hallways, or a Middle School corridor.

This is not just a building. It’s not just a hallway. It’s where that student will get the support and care they need to be nurtured and challenged.

It’s not just where that student eats lunch. It’s where they make lasting friendships and build a supportive community.

ave you ever wondered “What makes

an excellent student?” CWA thinks about

this a lot. In the last 63 years, 2850 total

students have walked the hallways of

our campus. Our thinkers, innovators,

communicators, collaborators,

stewards, and explorers are inspired

by a supportive community, engaging

experiences, and the world around them.

Learning Spaces

HInnovation and Design Labs Director Joe Romano recently engaged Middle School

students in a design thinking activity to brainstorm possible updates to the

underutilized “Press Box” area.

Page 27: Full Steam Ahead - Charles Wright Academy · a framed montage that blossoms with their energy and creativity. Donors CWA junior kindergarten and Calypso Glass 4 Junior Kindergarten

CHARLES WRIGHT ACADEMY 27F u l l S t e a m A h e a d

It’s not just a corner. It’s where that student turns daily habits into lifelong learning with lifelong friends.

Our students have been working all year in a design thinking process that has led to a vision for upgraded community spaces, so that these moments continue to happen every day. They’ve thought about things that no one else could think of — everything from the ambience of the space, to its accessibility. For example, Upper School students shared their hopes for the commons:

“I wish that there was a better way to configure the commons, so that it didn’t feel like we were so separate.”

“The commons is a really difficult space for me. Yesterday, I wanted to sit and relax between classes.”

“The outside area by the senior stage has a lot of potential and I wish we could use it more.”

Striving for excellence in all endeavors is in the DNA of Charles Wright Academy. We know that means excellent teachers, joyful

experiences, and a nurturing and challenging program. It also means inspiring and inviting spaces.

We have a powerful opportunity that will help us elevate our campus to the next level. Your investment in this year’s Fund-A-Need directly impacts how much of their vision comes to life. Together, we can enhance the student experience to be more inspiring, challenging, and nurturing so that every student who walks through our doors is ready to navigate the future with confidence.

The possibilities include new furnishings and designs to create a welcome and inclusive place for students to learn, work, and play in:

• The Upper School Commons

• Lower School Learning Pods

• Middle School “Press Box”

Possibilities include updated furniture in the Upper School Commons and Lower School Learning Pods.
