History of building(s) etc. 2. 1 Chronology Note if the dates are exactly known (e) or approximately estimated = circa (c) or (±) commission or competition date: The architects Rino Levi (1901-1965), Luiz Roberto Carvalho Franco (1926-2001) and Roberto Cerqueira César (1917-2003) office won a contest organized by the jewish comunnity, in 1958, having the Dr. Manoel Tabacow Hidal in chief, with the support of the Institute of Architects of Brasil – São Paulo branch. design period(s): 1958 start of site work: 1960 completion/inauguration: 1971 2. 2 Summary of development commission brief: design brief: The project showed by Levi and his office team at the contest was based in two pure blocks intercrossed orthogonally. This solution, simples as it seems, permitted the clear separation between the hospital functions.

building/construction: The cross solution proposed in the original project was abandoned during the construction: the horizontal volume was put under the vertical tower, keeping, although, the separation of functions by the use of a large entrance hall sustained by pilotis. This solution caused a commitment to the complex insolation, that was resolved by the installation of brise-soleils on the facade more damaged by the sun. completed situation: The main building was erected in the highest part of the terrain and the other blocks erected behind it, without causing damages its ventilation and visuality. original situation or character of site: Wide and wooded terrain (10.000 m²), located at Morumbi, a former sprawling zone of São Paulo city. 2. 3 Relevant persons/organisations original owner(s)/patron(s): Brazilian Benefit Israelite Society architect(s): Rino Levi, Luiz Roberto Carvalho Franco and Roberto Cerqueira César landscape/garden designer(s): other designer(s): consulting engineer(s): building contractor(s): 2. 4 Other persons or events associated with the building(s)/site name(s): association: event(s): period: 2. 5 Summary of important changes after completion type of change: alteration/renovation/restoration/extension/other: date(s): From 1978, more three blocks were constructed annexes by the main building, modifying the original construction. circumstances/reasons for changes: Amplify the hospital activities. persons/organisations involved: Brazilian Benefit Israelite Society 3. Description of building(s) etc. 3. 1 Site/building character Summarize main character and give notes on surviving site/building(s)/part(s) of area. If a site: principle features and zones of influence; main elements in spatial composition. If a building: main features, construction and materials. The construction shows the most consacrated solution used in monoblock hospital, which means a base with a blade tower above, in this case separated by an intermediated floor in pilotis, a tipical modernist design. This solution separates both ambulatory and enfermary rooms and also allows access to the elevators and the other blocks. The main facade is covered by glass and brise-soleils. The rear facade is covered in mansory with smalls windowns and overtures. 3. 2 Current use of whole building/site: General hospital

of principal components (if applicable): comments: 3. 3 Present (physical) condition of whole building/site: Modified but keeping the original use. of principal components (if applicable): of other elements (if applicable): of surrounding area (if applicable): comments: 3. 4 Note(s) on context, indicating potential developments Indicate, if known, potential developments relevant for the conservation/threats of the building/site 4. Evaluation Give the scientific reasons for selection for docomomo documentation Intrinsic value 4. 1 technical evaluation: The juxtaposed solution for the tower and the base shows the link with the modern hospital architecture, mainly conceived at United States. The wide entrance hall in pilotis is a tipical modernist design. The brise-soleils regulate the insolation and show a different design for the facade everytime the brises are moved. 4. 2 social evaluation: The Albert Einstein Benefit Israelite Society was created in 4th of june of 1955 in São Paulo. In accord to the entity fundation acts, the Society proposed the creation of an hospital for the jewish community and São Paulo high society. The hospital with 400 beds offered at the moment of its inauguration (1971) basicaly the same services it offers today: maternity, surgeries for several organs, pediatry and almost all the medical clinics. Along all this years of function, the Einstein Hospital incorporated modern technics for image diagnosis, dialysis, rehabilitation, blood bank, among others facilities, as robotic surgeries. 4. 3 cultural and aesthetic evaluation: The construction shows proper elements of the modernist language, as an intermediate entrace floor in pilotis, enabling the principle of the free plant. This pilotis separates both ambulatory and enfermary rooms and also allows access to the elevators and the other blocks. The main facade is covered by glass and brise-soleils, letting the project to follow another of the LeCorbusier five points, the free facade. The rear facade is covered in mansory with smalls windowns and overtures. The roof top is in open floor plan. In terms of the proposed space, Levi and his staff thought of details that helped to put Einstein's among the best brazilian hospitals. The kitchen was designed in order to allow drainage of any water that may come to be ponded in the areas of cooking and washing food. For this purpose, grids were installed in the floor to collect diurnal water that may be vanished to the ground. Also regarding to the hospital kitchen, specific areas for the work of nutritionists were arranged so that there was a direct relationship with the prepation of the diet of each patient. In respect to the corridors, Levi and staff thought that the glass windows of the

facades could be exploited in order to avoid the traditional structure of the pavilion with central corridor. This approach could ease the feeling of seclusion, often tied to the hospital and introduce tangible examples of the so-called "humanization of space". The architecture of Albert Einstein hospital has been an innovator in respect of the reception of the users. Each apartment was designed as a desirable extension of the patient's home: colored floors and walls, private health beds in each unit. Finally, details on doors opening and operating system brought to the inn spaces the care that is diserable in the relationship between health professionals and their patients. Comparative significance 4. 4 canonical status (local, national, international): National 4. 5 historic and reference values: The proposals of Rino Levi and his office team for hospital designs is, with no doubt, a reference in Brazil. He was one of the firsts archictets to face the project act as a reflex of functions needed to a good day-by-day life. Levi get to conciliate arts and technics contributing to the main amalgam of Modern Architecture in Brazil, in which form and function, composition and refinement walk hand by hand. Specifically in Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein case we can see a plein projective act lined with the modern and funcionalist constructive proposals. The Levi´s hospitals contributed to the establishment of norms and postures that macth with hygiene, salubrity and comfort improvements along the center decades of XXth century. 5.
