SL Chan has been repeatedly invited by leading structural consultants to assist in structural design, not only in local but also in overseas projects. 

SL Chan organized conference series ICASS which has been held in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore and edited the conference proceedings widely referred by researchers in steel structures.

SL Chan is the chief, managing and founding editor of the SCI (Expanded)  journal on steel structures which is the only SCI journal in steel structures printed in Hong Kong. He is also an invited chief editor of other two journals and member of editorial board of seven others. 

SL Chan and his student Dr. Chui published a book on advanced design of steel structures in 2000.

Software Development Developer of the computer program NIDA, which is possibly the first commercial software for fully second-order integrated nonlinear design and analysis program using a curved element for simulation of member initial imperfection. Nida was also used by the Labour Department for collapse investigation of scaffolds and has been assessed and approved by Buildings Department of Hong Kong ( please see pre-accepted structural programs in the web as http://www.bd.gov.hk/english/inform/index_acp.html for practical design by the nonlinear analysis.
