Fujikura is pleased to announce that we have developed compact, lightweight, large-capacity lithium ion capacitor cells and power supply module with high outputs. These products have an internal resistance of 1 milliohm or less to allow rapid charge and discharge by making the most of material technology based on our proprietary technology of manufacturing electrodes. This enabled a 70% reduction in size and weight of the new power supply modules over conventional ones.

In addition, the power supply modules come incorporated with a management system to control the voltage of the cells and a function of communicating between power supply modules. Thus, different voltages and capacities become available by connecting more than two modules in series or parallel. Our new power supply modules are made up of combined cells, adapting to each system of 12 V, 24 V, or 36 V.

To meet current demand for larger capacity of storage devices, installation of conventional lithium ion capacitors took up much room because many power supply modules had to be arranged. The new products are installable into narrow spaces, where installation was impossible before, due to miniaturization while maintaining large capacity. Considering the circumstances, we expect the products to find wider application in the automotive, industrial equipment, building equipment, power and energy fields.

In the Sendai City Subway Namboku Line, equipment renewal work has been started to ensure safe train operation and improve the transport efficiency.Signal cables that connect between the signal equipments, intended to transmit the positioning signal and the speed signal of the train, are important equipments responsible for the safe operation, will be renewed at the same time as the signal equipments.Fujikura's cable design with special conductor size and optimal insulation thickness to meet the transmission specificatins of the latest signal equipment, was evaluated highly and adopted by Nippon Signal Co., Ltd., the contractor of this renewal work. From the viewpoint of disaster prevention in underground spaces and in tunnels, the cable is composed of eco-friendly materials, which have flame-retardant, low smoke, and non-halogen characteritics.Furthermore, the cable has high flexibility to ease replacement of cables within limited night time in spite of having anti-rodent metallic layer.Fujikura will contribute to infrastructure depelopment projects to provide the safety/security and convenience in cooperation with our customers.

PANDA Fiber for Sensing

PANDA fibers maintain the polarization state of light by arranging the stress applying parts on the both sides of the core. These fibers are indeed mostly used for optical telecommunication systems, but some for sensing applications. This topic introduces PANDA fiber for sensing application.

Sensors using optical fibers include fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOGs) for detecting angular velocity to control the attitude of airplanes and multipoint strain/temperature sensors. PANDA fibers in these optical fiber sensors enables highly accurate sensing compare than standard single-mode fibers.

Polarization-maintaining optical fibers including PANDA fibers are used in FOGs since fluctuation of polarization state cause deterioration in accuracy of measurements. FOGs applications require to wind on small-size reels, it is available to provide PANDA fibers with smaller cladding diameter than existing products.

PANDA fibers are suitable for sensing two physical values of strain and temperature with one optical fiber at the same time because they can maintain and propagate two orthogonal polarized waves. HA13-PS-Y15, which has enhanced polarization-maintaining ability, offers increased sensing accuracy. We will contribute to society by applying our proprietary special fiber technology.

* Polarization-maintaining optical fibers are of different structures. A PANDA (Polarization-maintaining AND Absorption-reducing) fiber is a representative structure among polarization-maintaining optical fibers.

Mass-production of Smart Joint Box

Fujikura has developed and started mass-producing products called Smart Joint Box (hereafter Smart JB). Because of demand for new functions of vehicles designed with attention to passengers' safety, comfort, and convenience, vehicles are equipped with increasing numbers of new electronic devices. Accordingly, joint boxes(hereafter JBs)to distribute power to each electronic device are becoming larger and heavier. On the other hand, the miniaturization of automotive components such as JBs is required to meet the demands for a reduction in weight of a vehicle for better fuel efficiency and for more room for comfort. The aim of developing Smart JB is to resolve challenges in view of these tradeoffs.Existing JBs are composed of conductive metal plates called busbars. The new JB uses a printed circuit board in some portion to secure current-carrying capacity equivalent to that of the previous models, achieving 1.5 times higher density, avoiding increases in size and weight.Furthermore, incorporation of an electronic control unit (hereafter ECU), which was placed separately with a JB before, into the JB reduced the space needed to install an ECU and the number of the electric wires connected between the JB and the ECU. In addition to the achievement of miniaturization, ECUs are available in different specifications to meet customer demands by the adoption of a "Base plus Addition" structure that combines the JB portion with the ECU portion.

CEATEC JAPAN 2015

Fujikura will be exhibiting at CEATEC JAPAN held in October. This exhibition receives international attention as a symbolic representation of the industries based on IT and electronics and will be held under a theme for the year 2015, "NEXT - Today's Dreams, Future Realities".Our exhibits will be on display at Key Technology Stage where world's cutting-edge technology of electronic components and devices meet together. We will introduce a variety of products that contribute widely to social infrastructure to mobile devices in our lives. The exhibits include fiber-optic applications including a fiber laser, yttrium-based high-temperature super-conducting wire rod, flexible printed circuit (FPC) board, electronic wire, pressure sensor, oxygen sensor, antenna, dye-sensitized solar cell, EV connector, and optical connector for super-high vision. We all look forward with great pleasure to welcoming you.
