FUEL SOURCES: NUCLEARBY NINA GREEN
ADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
• Currently, 30 countries have nuclear power programs.
• Nuclear power steadily grew around the world from early 1970s to the early 1990s.
• Nuclear capacity developed most quickly between 1970 and 1995 in North America, primarily the U.S.
• Gives us 20% of our electricity each year.
• Nuclear power comes from a reactor where atoms are split to release there energy.
• Nuclear power plants don't use coal, fuel oil, or natural gas to boil water.
• It captures the heat released during fission in the nuclear reaction to heat water to make steam.
DISADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
• When the control rods are lowered into the bundles, the rods produce less heat.
• The waste from nuclear energy is extremely dangerous.
• Nuclear power plants can to a certain extent be used to build nuclear weapons (nuclear proliferation).
• Nuclear energy is the occurrence of accidents due to core meltdown. These accidents happen when the core overheats and radiation products are allowed to escape the building.
