HOW DO FUEL CELLS WORK?

HOW DO FUEL CELLS WORK?
Fuel Cells Generate ElectricityBy Freeing Electrons From H2 Gas
Because the Proton Exchange Membrane does not carry electron current,
the Freed Electrons are Forced to Follow an External Path through a Wire(Thus Generating Electrical Power)
![Page 4: FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062411/56814cd7550346895db9daa2/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
HOW DO FUEL CELLS WORK?
Because the Proton Exchange Membrane does not carry electron current,
the Freed Electrons are Forced to Follow an External Path through a Wire(Thus Generating Electrical Power)While the H+ ions (protons) are free to travel across the membrane via
Ion Exchange Reactions!

HOW DO FUEL CELLS WORK?
While the H+ ions (protons) are free to travel across the membrane via Ion Exchange Reactions!
At the Opposite Electrode, H+ ions, O2(gas) andElectrons combine to form H2O byproducts--- Making this Technology ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY!!!

Hydrogen Storage Materials---Complex Metal Hydride --- NaAlH4
Technical Questions surrounding the use of this material???
• What are the kinetics of hydrogen uptake and release?• What are the cost benefits of hydrogen fuel vs. oil? • • • Where are the Dopant (Ti) atoms within the structure? (Answer: Using Our X-ray Approaches, we will try to pinpoint the location of Ti in NaAlH4.)

Impact on 9-12 grade science education---- how will you begin to construct a learning module around this work so that 9-12 graders can become interested/involved in synchrotron x-ray work (this is specific to your science education interests and I am also interested in developing this sort of information).
User Facilities…(What’s needed to discuss with K-12ers the need for user facilities?)
