Step 1: Understanding the InterfaceStep 1: Understanding the Interface

Local site navigation (either lab machine or

personal machine)

Remote site navigation (FTP server)

Transfer queue (files waiting to upload)

Step 2: Connect to the ServerStep 2: Connect to the Server

1. FTP Server Name 2. Flashline User ID

3. Flashline Password

4. Port is 21 for FTP

5. Select for server access

Message log shows all queries between the client (us) and the FTP site.

The public_html folder for our class documents. Double-click on it to select it as the target folder.

Notice that the public_html folder was selected.

2. Highlight the resume document to upload to the FTP server.

Right-click on the selected source document and choose the option to “Upload”.

FTP transfer complete. Resume document is now in the public_html folder.

Note the transfer status in the message log.

Step 7: Change File AttributesStep 7: Change File Attributes

Right-click on the FTP server document to change the file’s attributes.

Step 8: Change File PermissionsStep 8: Change File Permissions

Change the file permissions as follows:

1. Owner reads and writes.

2. Group reads and writes.

3. Public reads only.

Step 9: Disconnect from the FTP Step 9: Disconnect from the FTP ServerServer

Select File Disconnect to properly exit from the FTP server.

Step 10: Checking the URLStep 10: Checking the URL

In a browser window, enter the URL to determine if the file permissions were set correctly and allow viewing over the Internet. The URL format is as follows:

http://www.personal.kent.edu/~userid/resume.doc

or

http://www.personal.kent.edu/~userid/resume.pdf
