FOR more than two decades, the FTASA has contributed towards South Africa’s ever-rising standards of flexographic printing, and the annual Print Excellence Awards programme has provided a showcase for ‘the best of the best’.

As always, hearty congratulations go to this year's champions. These printers can hold their heads high, knowing they count among South Africa's – indeed the world’s – top-ranking flexographic printers.

The judges take their responsibilities extremely seriously – each entry is hotly debated and closely scrutinised. In fact, entries are re-examined throughout the judging process in an arduous procedure that ensures a gold medal is high praise. Stepping up to the plate this year were Bill Marshall (judging chairman), Derek Murison (FTASA president), Erich Kühl (FTASA executive secretary), Kevin Naidu (Marshall Hinds) and Ricky Maconi (KB Labels), who spent many hours closely analysing entries.

Undoubtedly, this year’s winners have done the industry proud. Printing on a spectrum of substrates, using a variety of formats, the results can only be described as ‘excellent’.

'Although it's well established that flexography competes with, and sometimes outperforms, other print processes, the FTASA has an ongoing obligation to demonstrate this through these annual awards,' observes Bill Marshall.

Also rewarding for the FTASA is participation by a number of entrants who have not previously featured among winners. 'This,' Bill contends, 'indicates the ongoing development of South Africa's flexo industry and proves that excellence is possible even in today's stressful and financially-challenged economy.'

However, the usual plea goes to those who can't believe their entry didn't win!

'Sadly, there are common, recurring problems with entries that could be award-winners,' Bill explains. 'Entrants don't follow the rules of the competition, and it's often obvious that samples haven't been examined by a competent person before submission. The judges scrutinise all entries with magnifying eye glasses. Entrants should do the same!'

Finally, these Print Excellence Awards don’t stop with the luncheon and the publication of this brochure. An added bonus is the display of winning entries on the FTASA’s website. In addition, this brochure is circulated to all PACKAGiNG & Print Media readers and the content also appears on the magazine’s website.

And a closing word about the sponsors – the other champions who make the whole thing possible, allowing FTASA to pursue its objective of advancing the flexographic printing process.
