FSSAI RegistrationThe Food Safety & Standards Act. 2006 enacted bythe legislature of India to improve the performance of food industry. The primary purpose of Act is to regulate the functioning of food operator, online seller, manufacturer, distributor, and importer.
You can’t start a food kind of business without a valid food
license from concern state government. Therefore, any food
manufacturing, food processing, packaging and distributing
entity is now required to obtain a food license under FSSAI.
The regulator has taken such active steps to introduce
transparency in the food business and also to ensure that food
products undergo certain quality checks, and food product
should be prepared, packed and marketed as per pre-defined
norms by FSSAI.

However, with the strong footprint by the FSSAI enforcement
over the instances of adulteration, substandard products and
improve accountability of manufacturers.
In early 2016, FSSAI had banned the consumption of Maggy in
India and Nestle brand. Later FSSAI has lifted the ban after
modication in manufacturing component of Nestle Maggy.
FSSAI Registration is mandatory for food related businesses.
Food License is issued by FSSAI for carrying on activities
related to food catering, operating restaurant, dried-fruit
packaging or processing and any stage of manufacturing,
food processing, packaging, storage, transportation, and dis-
tribution of food in any form.

What is Food License and Why food license is required?
Small retailer, Hawker, on Wheel vendor or a temporary
stallholder with permission of appropriate authority, or small
scale or cottage or such other industries relating to food
cooking business operator are exempted from obtaining food
License or FSSAI Registration.
What type of food business exempted from food license?
After approval of food License from FSSAI, generally, it is
issued with a validity of one year to two years. Before expiry,
if the license, it can be renewed for another one year or two
years based on the requirements of the license holder.
Validity of food License
Food license can be for state level operation or pan-India
Operations. Legally with state level license, you can operate
food business within a state. Small and medium Hotel,
Restaurant, bar, outdoor food caterors, medium size food
mmanufacturers, Packers, small size Food processor is covered
under State license. Large scale food producers, importer,
and distributor, come under central licensing.
Type of License
A separate food License / FSSAI License required and issued
for each business location where food or type of food
business. Therefore, an entity may have to obtain multiple
food licenses if it operates various sites in a state of outside
state. If you want to open ve restaurants in one state and two
outside state, then you need food license for each location.
