Thisyear’sconferenceisentirelyfocussedonexerciseandphysicalactivityandthebenefitsitcanbringtoourpatientsandthegeneralpopulationasawhole.OnFridaymorningwesetthesceneforthetwodayswithouropeningthematicsession“ExerciseandPopulationHealth”withanopeningkeynoteaddressbyProfessorDonalO’Sheaandlocalandinternationalspeakers.Followingcoffeebreak,theSportsMedicineUpdatessessionseesthereturnofourregularanti-dopingslot,aswellasupdatesontheroleofexerciseincardiorespiratorydiseaseandmentalhealthfromeminentlocalconsultants.OnSaturdaymorningtheroleofexerciseinprehabandrehab,pre-operativesurgery,barrierstoimplementationinexerciseprogrammesand exercise for joint health are the topics of our third thematic session: ‘Exercise in Treatment andRehabilitation’andfollowingcoffeeinourlastthematicsessionourexercisescientistswilltalktousaboutadvancesinexerciseprescriptionaswellasnoveltechnologicalinnovations.

OurtwoinvitedinternationalspeakersProfPaulThompsonfromtheUSAandProfUlfEkelundfromNorway:Prof Ekelund examines exercise in childhood and adolescence in our opening session and examines theevidence around the statement that “sitting is the new smoking”. Prof Thompsonwill look at the lateststrategiestopreventSACDinathletesonFridayandfinishtheconferencebylookingatthehazardsoftoomuchexercise.

InourdelegatepresentationstheFSEM/ARTI/ISCPcollaborationcontinuesinitsmissiontoencourageandsupportthesportsandexercisemedicinerelatedresearchwithadjudicatedposterpresentationsonFridaylunchtime,pre-selecteddelegateoralpresentationsinourmainscientificsessiononFridayafternoon;and,finallyfurtherdelegateoralpresentationsinparallelsessionsonSaturdayafternoon.InlieuofpracticalskillsbasedworkshopsthisyeareachofourparalleloralsessionsonSaturdayafternoonwillbeopenedwithtalksfromasmallsampleofeminentlocalPI’sworkinginexercisebasedresearch!

ProfUlfEkelundobtainedhisPhDfromtheKarolinskaInstitutet,Stockholm,Swedenin2002andiscurrentlyprofessorinphysicalactivityandhealthattheDepartmentofSportMedicine,NorwegianSchool of Sport Sciences, Oslo, Norway and professor in physical activity epidemiology at theNorwegianInstituteofPublicHealth.BeforemovingtoNorway,Ulfleadaresearchprogrammeinphysical activity epidemiology at theMedical Research Council Epidemiology Unit, University ofCambridgewherehecurrentlyholdsanhonorarycontractasseniorinvestigatorscientist.Hismainresearchinterestsarerelatedtomeasurementandpopulationlevelsofphysicalactivity;theroleofphysical activity and sedentary behaviour for preventing non-communicable diseases especially

DrHelenFrench isaSeniorLecturer intheSchoolofPhysiotherapy,RoyalCollegeofSurgeons inIreland.HerPhDcompleted in2011andwhichwas fundedbyaHRBFellowship for theTherapyProfessionsinvestigatedtheeffectivenessofexercisetherapyandmanualtherapyforosteoarthritisofthehip.Sincethen,shehascontinuedtoconductresearchonlowerlimbosteoarthritisandotherrelatedpathologies.SheiscurrentlyconductingaCochranereviewontheeffectivenessofadjunctivetherapiesused inconjunctionwithexercise therapy forhiporkneeosteoarthritis.DrFrenchwasawardedaFulbright-HRBHealthImpactScholarAward2017-2018toconductresearchonmovementanalysisofhipdysfunction inadolescentswhichshewillundertake inBostonUniversity.Shealso

teachesonpostgraduatecoursesforphysiotherapistsinmusculoskeletaltherapyforhipandpelvicgirdlepain.

ProfSeanP.Gaine,MD,PhD, isConsultantRespiratoryPhysicianatMaterMisericordiaeUniversityHospitalinDublin.HecompletedhisresidencyandfellowshiptrainingattheJohnsHopkinsHospital,Baltimore, USA and subsequently held faculty positions at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and at theUniversityofMarylandSchoolofMedicine.HeestablishedthePulmonaryHypertensionCenterattheJohnsHopkinsHospitalin1999andsubsequentlytheNationalPulmonaryHypertensionUnitinDublin.His research interests include new therapeutic agents for themanagement of pulmonary vasculardiseases.ProfessorGaineisamemberofnumerousinternationalassociations,andisaFellowofthe

CollegeofChestPhysicians,theRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansinIrelandandtheFacultyofSportsandExerciseMedicine.HeisChiefMedicalOfficeroftheOlympicCouncilofIrelandandledthemedicalteamattheOlympicGamesinAthens,Beijing,LondonandRio.ProfJulietteHussey

Prof Juliette Hussey has been in Trinity for over 20 years and was head of the discipline ofPhysiotherapy from 2003 – 2014. During that time she led on developing programmes inPhysiotherapy and allied health sciences which are delivered in Singapore. She was elected tofellowshipin2011,promotedtoassociateprofessorin2006andtoProfessorin2015.SheiscurrentlytheVicePresidentforGlobalRelationsinTrinityCollegeDublin,TheUniversityofDublin.ProfessorJulietteHusseyleadsagroupworkingintheareaofexerciserehabilitationinpatientswithcancer.Herresearchistranslationalandisaimedatscientificallyimprovingexerciseprescriptiontooptimisetherapeuticresponses.Thisincludesevaluatingmeansofimprovingphysicalcapacitypreoperatively

toreducepostoperativemorbidityforpatientsundergoingcomplexcancersurgery.Achallengeintheareaofexerciseandcanceristodetermineunderlyingmechanismsandhergroupisworkingwithclinicalscientistsinthisrespect.Hercurrentresearchinoesophagealandprostatecancer isfundedbytheHealthResearchBoardandtheWorldCancerResearch Fund. Her group is also part ofMovember Global Action Plan 4 a randomised controlled trial examiningexerciseinmenwithadvancedprostatecancer.DrAbbieLane

DrAbbieLane,MDLRCPSIFRCPsychisanAssociateProfessoratUCDandhasworkedasaConsultantPsychiatristsince1996.Shesetupand ledaStressClinic inDublinuntil2013andsincethenhasengagedinprivatepractice,TheGulliverClinic,providingassessmentandadvicetoindividualsandgroups. Her specialist areas include the assessment and management of stress related illnessincluding anxiety, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and she is an expert onOccupationalStressandBullying.Sheisknownforherholisticapproachtomentalhealthandherinterestintheinteractionofmentalandphysicalhealth.

DrNoelMcCaffreyisasportsandexercisemedicinespecialistandlecturerinDCU’sSchoolofHealthand Human Performance, where he is Chair of the BSc (Athletic Therapy and Training) degreeprogramme and medical director of the MedEx programme which offers supervised exerciseprogrammes topatientswithdiverse chronic illnesses.Hehas collaboratedwith the IrishCancerSocietyindevelopingtheMoveOnandLivingLifecancerrehabilitationprogrammesinMedEx.HeisprincipalinvestigatoroftheHSE-fundedevaluationofMedEx.Inaddition,heservedonthesteeringcommitteeoftheDCU-basedgroupthatdevelopedaNationalExerciseReferralTemplateonbehalfof the HSE He is a collaborator with surgical and anesthesiology colleagues in the Mater and

Dr CatherineMcGorrian PhDMRCPI is an Associate Clinical Professor in UCD, and a ConsultantCardiologistworkingfromtheMaterHeartHouse,whereshehasbeeninvolvedintheFamilyHeartScreeningClinic since2010.This clinicprovides services including screeningandmanagement forfamiliesaffectedbygeneticcardiacconditions,andforfamilieswhohavebeenaffectedbysuddenarrhythmicdeathsyndrome.DrMcGorrianisamemberofthenationalSuddenCardiacDeathCouncilandhasspokenontopicsincludingSADS,SCDandexerciseincardiacdiseasesatnationalmeetings.Herresearchinterestsincludetheinheritedchannelopathies,biomarkersincardiomyopathies,andgenotype-phenotypecorrelationsininheritedcardiacdiseases.Shepioneeredthefirststudylooking

Catherine Woods is Professor of Physical Activity and Health in the Department of PhysicalEducation and Sport Sciences (PESS) at the University of Limerick (UL).
