INTRODUCTION: FSC is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest

management worldwide FSC facilitates the development of standards, ensures monitoring of certified operations and

protects the FSC trademark so consumers can choose products that come from well managedforests

IMPORTANCE OF FSC: Brings direct benefits to the forest, such as protecting biodiversity, indigenous peoples' rights,

workers rights, and areas of significant environmental or cultural importance Provides a connection between the forest and the end user Positively impacts workers and communities, shifts governance processes globally, and changes

economic and environmental conditions in the forest Improves conditions such conflict over land tenure and use, worker's health and safety, protection

of endangered species and participatory forest policy

TYPES OF WOOD UNDER FSC:There are 3 types of wood that are maintained by the FSC System, based on the content of theparticular product lines. They are as follows:

    1. FSC 100% : All content in pure form comes from an FSC Certified forest No recycled or non-FSC fiber of any kind

Note: non-wood fiber (i.e. Wheatboard) or non-fiber materials dont factor a products FSC status. It isonly concerned with wood and wood fiber.

    2. FSC Recycled: An FSC Recycled product means that a minimum of 85% of the wood fiber content is from post-

consumer sources, within a maximum of 15% coming from post-industrial sources

    3. FSC Mixed Mixed source products are a blend of FSC 100%, Recycled and/or Controlled fiber Controlled fiber refers to any wood fiber in an FSC product that isn't from an FSC forest or recycled.

All Controlled sources are screened to ensure they aren't contributing to any of the five mostdestructive practices in forestry:

Illegal logging Natural forest conversion to other land uses The liquidation of high conservation value forests Civil rights violations Genetic modification of forest species (traditional breeding being fine, of course)

INORDER TO ACQUIRE A FSC CERTIFICATE BY THE VENDOR : Contact one or several FSC accredited certification bodies. To give you a first estimate

regarding cost and time needed, the certification body will need some basic information aboutyour operation. The certification body will provide you with information about therequirements for FSC certification.

You decide which certification body you would like to work with and sign an agreement withthe certification body.

A certification audit takes place to assess your companys qualifications for certification.

The data collected at the audit is the basis of the audit report based on which the certificationbody makes the certification decision.

If the certification decision is positive, you receive a FSC certificate. If the audit revealed thatyour operation is not yet in full compliance with FSC requirements, then you can go for furtheraudits after you have implemented the changes suggested in the certification report

NOTE: FSC does not issue certificates itself. The certification process is carried out by independentorganizations called certification bodies. These certification bodies assess forest management and chainof custody operations against the applicable Forest Stewardship Standards. Only FSC accreditedcertification bodies are authorized to issue FSC certificates

What is composite wood?It is a family of engineered wood panels, which include particleboard, medium density fiberboard(MDF) and hardboard.

(Particleboard is made from small wood particles pressed together with glue under extreme heatand pressure to make a solid panel.MDF and Hardboard are made the same way except the wood particles are further refined intoindividual fibers to provide a smooth edge to the panel)

Are Composite Wood products real wood?YES!! They are made entirely from an advanced form of natural wood

What are composite woods used for? From furniture to flooring, cabinets to crown molding, all these and more can be made strongerand more economical with the help of composite wood products

How are composite woods good for the environment?1. Composite woods are among the most environmentally responsible building materials available

today.2. They are typically made from recycled and recovered wood waste that would otherwise be

burned or thrown into a landfill, so they allow us to make better use of our valuable naturalwood resource and optimal use of each tree

    3. They reduce the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming by locking up the carbondioxide naturally removed from the air by trees during their growing cycle

Plywood:Plywood is a wood product manufactured out of 13 sheets of veneer, or plies, pressed togetherand glued, with their grains going in opposite directionsIt tends to be extremely strong and is treated in many different ways depending upon itsintended application

Note: Greenply offers plywood made out of Eucalyptus, which means, is satisfies the credit forFSC Wood, and also for Rapidly Renewable Materials.

Common types of Timber in FSC Category:

Please refer to the attached File

What is Timber?Timber is another name for wood, whether still standing in the form of trees or felled and turnedinto boards for construction. Some people may also refer to it as lumber, or differentiate betweenunprocessed wood and lumber as cut wood packaged for commercial sale. The timber industryaround the world is huge, providing wood for a variety of products from paper to particleboard.

What is Virgin Wood?Virgin wood consists of wood and other products such as bark and sawdust which have had nochemical treatments or finishes applied. Wood may be obtained from a number of sourceswhich may influence its physical and chemical characteristics.Virgin wood is suitable for a range of energy applications. It can be burned for heat and/or powerat a range of scales. New 'second generation' technologies are being developed which are capableof producing a range of liquid or gaseous transport biofuels from woody material.

Physical Characteristics of Virgin Wood:Virgin wood is untreated and clean. It may range in moisture content from oven dry to 60% orhigher as freshly harvested, green wood. As received there may be physical inclusions from thegrowing or harvesting processes, such as mud, stones, ice or nails, which may need removingbefore further processing or combustion. There may also be chemical contaminants from the soil, water or air, or any pesticides or other sprays used, such as heavy metals, halogens or other tracematerials. In general levels of these will be very low

Types of Virgin Woods: 1. Bark2. Logs3. Sawdust4. Wood chips5. Wood pallets and briquettes

What is Veneer?Veneer resembles laminate and is also a thin strip that is applied to furniture, but it is actuallymade of a thin layer of real wood. The wood layer is carefully glued down onto the furniture basewood.

    What is Laminate?

    5/5

Laminate furniture is not made out of real wood. There are real wood products in laminates, notablyparticleboard, but the material is also based on plastics. There are usually plastic layers added with aparticleboard core. Manufacturers print wood colors and textures on the surface of the laminate andcover them with one last plastic coating for protection. The laminate layers are then glued to furniturebases.

What is the difference between Laminate & Veneer?Laminate and veneer furniture can both look alike and feel alike, making the differences difficult tonotice. However, the two materials are notably different, made in different ways and out of differentmaterials.A veneer will generally give you a better look for your furniture, while a laminate surface may havebetter durability.
