On a personal note, it has been an absolute pleasure for me to serve as a principal in this community and I look forward to doing the same for years to come. Thanks to all of our students, staff and families who have made my first year at Fry a memorable one! I would like to keep you informed about some of the work we’ve been doing as a staff this year. You’ve probably heard about changes in curriculum (“The Common Core” is a phrase you’ll hear more and more of over time), the challenges of tighter budgets, and the ever-increasing need for schools to serve as partners with families in preparing today’s younger generation for the challenges of the future. Those are all big concepts that impact the things that we do as a school. But, as a staff we found it important this year to start with our foundations and revisit WHAT WE DO and WHY. I have always believed that if you know who you are and what you believe you have a better foundation for how to respond in varying, changing circumstances. There is no need to reinvent yourself or your organization if your core values, mission and vision are well established. Over time you will hear more about the Fry Mission and Fry Vision we have developed. You’ll hopefully see the language and hear us talk about it, and even sense the mission and vision in the outcomes you see from your children. It is unbelievable that we are approaching the end of the school year. On a personal note, it has been an absolute pleasure for me to serve as a principal in this community and I look forward to doing the same for years to come. Thanks to all of our students, staff and families who have made my first year at Fry a memorable one!

I would like to keep you informed about some of the work we’ve been doing as a staff this year. You’ve probably heard about changes in curriculum (“The Common Core” is a phrase you’ll hear more and more of over time), the challenges of tighter budgets, and the ever-increasing need for schools to serve as partners with families in preparing today’s younger generation for the challenges of the future. Those are all big concepts that impact the things that we do as a school. But, as a staff we found it important this year to start with our foundations and revisit WHAT WE DO and WHY. STEM explorations for 4th and 5th grades were held in May and this year for the first time we extended the workshops to kindergarten and 1st grade as well. The students had the opportunity to participate in various interactive hands-on activities that covered the S.T.E.M spectrum – building a model airplane, playing brain games, fingerprinting, DNA extraction, solving rock formation mysteries, building motorized space models, harnessing winds power to make energy, exploring animal science, creating natural acts like tornadoes, exploring the world of physics and many more. As we end this school year, the STEM committee would like to thank all the amazing parent volunteers who have helped us with the various initiatives this past year. And looking ahead, we would like to continue the momentum into the next year. Poetic Power Contest

The LMC thanks its volunteers for their dedication and support: We have been so fortunate this school year to have many volunteers in the LMC. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. You are wonderful and we couldn't do it all without you. We hope you will consider coming back next year. We wanted take a moment to recognize a few volunteers that will no longer be with us here in the LMC because they have fifth grade students moving on to Scullen. From Mrs. Loughran: Read good books and have fun Remember to keep reading great books over the summer! The Naperville Public Library has a wonderful summer reading program that is starting on June 3rd. They came and spoke to us about it last week and it sounds like there are some really fun programs to participate in over at the public library. Make sure to sign up to win cool prizes and enjoy some fun reads! Enjoy your summer and we'll see you back in the LMC in the fall.

The number one thing all students should practice in math this summer are the math facts. Different practice is needed based on the student’s grade level in the fall. When learning the facts, the student should practice the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts until he/she is fluent in remembering the facts without figuring them out. This is the number one math practice needed over the summer. When school resumes in August, teachers expect students to know the facts/skills from the grade before. Students who know the basic facts from memory learn new math concepts more confidently. Incoming 1st graders should be counting large groups of everyday objects and writing the numbers to 100. They should know the addition facts 0 + 0, 0 + 1, 0 +2, 0 + 3, 0 + 4, 0 + 5, 1 + 1, 1 + 2, 1 + 3, 1 + 4, 2 + 2, 2 +3 and the related subtraction facts 5 – 5 to 0 – 0. Incoming 2nd graders should know the addition facts above, the facts equal to 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, and the related sub-traction facts. Subtraction is harder, so more time should be spent practicing it. Incoming 3rd graders should know all facts to 9 + 9 = 18 and the related subtraction facts. They should be able to add and subtract three digit numbers using any strategies. Incoming 4th graders should know all of the above facts, the multiplication facts to 10 x 10 and the division facts related to each. Incoming 5th graders should: Know all of the above addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts; Multiply problems like: 3,489 x 6 and 97 x 68 using any method without errors; Add and subtract large numbers without errors; and Divide whole numbers (such as 4567 ÷ 4) using any strategy and be able to explain their thinking.

Reflections

Students will you draw or paint? Make some music on the garage band? Make an i-Movie? Take pictures? Dance or choreograph? Write? If you said Yes to any one of these, then challenge your creativity and work on a theme provided for the Reflections program.

Each year, the PTA Reflections Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves artistically and to receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Students in preschool through grade 12 create and submit works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage). Each year, all entrants are recognized for their effort and creativity. Top entries in each category are forwarded and judged at the district, state and national level.

A Special Artist Division is an option for students with a disability as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

All entries must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines and instructions provided by the PTA Reflections program. The rules are provided on the Fry website, under the PTA Reflections tab. Spring Fling was another big success this year, raising $12,400! A big thank you to the committee and all the volunteers who gave their time to the event. And to all of our Fry Families, thank you for supporting this

great event year after year.

The 2013/2014 PTA Membership forms were included in the student's registration packets that were sent home via backpack for K-4th and via mail for incoming Kindergartners. Hello Fry Families,

We’re in the final stretch and summer break is fast approaching. I’d like to take a moment to reflect back on this year and some of the new things we got to experience at Fry. At the very top of the list is our new Principal, Mr. Younce, who was a joy to work with and couldn’t have been more supportive of the PTA. We got our STEM lab up and running, along with 30 iPads and the charging cart and other necessary accompaniments thanks to the generous donations from our families. And we’ve got our great newsletter, Fox Tales. A huge thank you to Nidhi Sethi for all the hard work you do every month to get it pulled together. My term as PTA President is drawing to a close. I have very much enjoyed getting to know more

parents, volunteers, and staff over the course of this year. I want to thank the rest of this year’s PTA Board for all the time and work you’ve put in for the school, and especially our Vice President, Jessica Cabinian, who always had my back and made sure nothing slipped through the cracks. Have a happy, healthy and fun summer.

That’s a lot of Box Tops and Labels for Education

It has been a strong year for Fry’s collection of Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education! Close to $1500 was submitted between July 2012 – June 2013 in BTFE submissions (at 0.10 each – that is 15,000) and we submitted over 15,300 points through the Labels for Education which are being used to acquire resources and tools for the STEM lab. This could not be done without the amazing Committee of 12 volunteers that have helped count, sort, glue and batch together all our submissions. In addition, we know submissions have come from students/families, teachers, extended out of town families, work groups, and Fry Alumni families that still wants to support us.

The PTA is thrilled with the program’s success at the school. Thank you to everyone! Our winners for the most submissions by grade are:

Overall the Kindergarteners submitted the most clippings, with 4th grade coming in second place and 5th graders coming in third class for total grade level submissions. From Anne Carreras: To all the Picture Day Volunteers We appreciate you taking the time to assist on Picture Day whether you were a classroom runner or a "hairdresser" combing/tending to stray hairs or fixing shirt collars so each child looked his or her best. I know the kids were happy seeing their own moms or a friend's mom on Picture Day. You all helped to make Picture Day run smoothly and efficiently for me these last few years and I am truly grateful. My child is moving on to Scullen next year so the Picture Day committee is needs a chair, please consider taking over. I would be happy to answer any questions. Common Core State Standards

What is the Common Core State Standards Initiative? The Common Core State Standards(CCSS) Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that states voluntarily adopt. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four year college programs or enter the workforce. The standards are clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school.

Illinois educators have joined a national movement to adopt common standards and assessments for English language arts and mathematics. Currently, standards for what students should know and are able to do vary among states, as does the difficulty of the assessments used to determine whether students are meeting those standards. Common Core State Standards allow for collaboration among states on best practices and professional development. A common set of standards ensures that all students, no matter where they live, will be focused on graduating from high school prepared for postsecondary education and careers. In an increasingly mobile society, families with children transferring to new schools will not have to adjust to new learning expectations. Standards will be the same for all students in states adopting the CCSS, making the transition smoother for students.

How do the Common Core State Standards compare to previous state standards? The Common Core State Standards were written by building on the best and highest state standards in existence in the U.S., examining the expectations of other high performing countries around the world, and careful study of the research and literature available on what students need to know and be able to do to be successful in college and careers. No state in the country was asked to lower their expectations for their students in adopting the Common Core. The standards are evidence-based, aligned with college and work expectations, include rigorous content and skills, and are informed by other top performing countries. They were developed in consultation with teachers and parents from across the country so they are also realistic and practical for the classroom.

Will there be tests based on the Common Core State Standards? Yes. States that adopted the Common Core State Standards are currently collaborating to develop common assessments that will be aligned to the standards and replace existing end of year state assessments. These assessments will be available in the 2014-2015 school year.

Supports Fry: The Fry School PTA would like to acknowledge the efforts and contributions of the GE Diversity Group

African American Forum from GE’s Hoffman Estates office. In the Spring of 2012, Fry Elementary was selected as one of the two school beneficiaries that would receive Box Tops for Education that were collected/submitted by employees. Thank you to Scott Laub (parent of students at Fry) who submitted our School to be considered. In the past 15 months, the GE group has submitted close to 900 Box Tops and just recently also sent a batch of Labels for Education. Fry is one of two recipient schools and they will be supporting us through October 2013. Through various collection places and incentives, the group at GE encourages employees to submit BTFE’s and LFE’s. We are grateful for their support of the PTA and the BTFE/LFE efforts to raise funds for the school.
