MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am

In today’s gospel, Jesus tells a harsh and bloody

story that makes a direct and uncompromising

point. It must have sent a chill down the spines

of his unhappy listeners. After all, who would

like being compared to thieves and murderers? Who would like to be

told they are going to lose everything?

Almost 2000 years later, we can still feel that uncomfortable chill.

And that shouldn’t be surprising, for Jesus is speaking just as much to

us now as he was to those standing in front of him in the Temple

then. When he says, “the kingdom of God will be taken away from

you,” he is looking at us, too.

Jesus’ message might be painfully clear, but he also never shuts the

door. In the very same sentence, he adds that God’s kingdom will be

“given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.”

But what are the fruits of the kingdom and how can we become the

kind of people who produce them? Luckily, Paul offers some help

today in his letter to the Christians of Philippi. He tells them: Don’t

worry; pray and ask God for help; then act honourably, justly and

with a pure heart.

And if we plant and tend these fruits of the kingdom, we will taste

their sweetness at harvest time—”the peace of God, which surpasses

all understanding.”

Patrick Gallagher.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news.

We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be.

We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy.

We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness,

affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ.

May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

Mythologist and Catholic writer Joseph Campbell is of the opinion that people are not so much looking for the meaning of life as such, but for the experience of be-

ing more abundantly alive. “Eternity has little to do with the hereafter,” he wrote. “This is it. If you don’t get it here you won’t get it anywhere. The experience of eternity right here and right now is the function of life. Heaven is not the place to have the experience; here’s the place to have the experience.”

We look at each other and see God’s face, maybe faintly, every day. We taste something of the flavours of God’s presence in everything that happens to us.

There is a divine whisper in every sound; even the sound of temptation.

Maybe our future resurrection will reveal that we have been experiencing it all our lives. We will have already felt it, “proved on the pulse”, as John Keats wrote just

before he died. “Heaven”, wrote Fr Harry Williams in True Resurrection, “will be recognised as a country we have already entered, and in whose light and warmth we have already lived.” We will know well when we’re home.

Extract from “The senses have it” - Fr Daniel O’Leary.
