For the 2018 renewal of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) audit certified by BRC under the Global Standard for Food Initiative (Issue 7, January 2015), FruitSmart achieved a Grade AA, BRC’s highest mark. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standards for Food Safety was the first scheme approved by GFSI in 2000 and is the most used GFSI approved scheme worldwide with over 15,000 certified sites in over 100 countries. “The depth of their experience and the diversity of the worldwide acceptance made BRC scheme the best choice for our operations and international customer base”, stated Cora Huffman, FruitSmart’s Director of Quality. The certificate can be viewed and printed from the FruitSmart website, www.fruitsmart.com, under the Technical Info page.
2018 is off to an excellent start with current (as of April 1) snowpack in all Washington State regions at 113% of normal. Winter mountain snowpack is critical for eastern Washington agriculture as the melting snow is the source for irrigation throughout the summer growing months. Although a long way until 2018 Washington harvest, conditions are promising for a healthy and bountiful year.
Although still early in the harvest year, at this point carryover inventory and/or expected crop volumes should keep most finished product pricing at or somewhat less than 2017 harvest pricing.
The United States Department of Agricultural (USDA) issued ruling on April 4th establishing a proportion of 2017 harvest cranberries (or equivalent cranberry concentrate) that are to be restricted, which means disposed. The “restricted” volume is set at 15% of the 2017 harvest, a percentage proposed by cranberry growers. The USDA estimated that the 15% restriction would remove 1.1 million barrels (110 million pounds) of cranberries from the market, resulting in carryover inventory of 82.9% of annual sales. For more detailed info please refer to Federal Register, Volume 83, No. 65, April 4, 2018, Rules and Regulations or go to link https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2018-04-04/pdf/2018-06875.pdf. This USA government assistance program, similar in result to the recent one million gallon USDA bonus buy of Concord grape juice concentrate, is designed to reduce industry inventory in hopes of increasing future grower pricing.

Fruit Market Update
Per Capital Press, developing a marketing plan and funding for it are among the tasks remaining as the Washington state apple industry prepares for the first sales of Cosmic Crisp apples in two years. With 629,000 Cosmic Crisp trees planted in the Spring of 2017, 5.8 million trees for planting in the Spring of 2018 and 5.2 million to be planted in 2019, the industry estimates 200,000 boxes of Cosmic Crisp will go to stores from 2019 crop, 1.9 million boxes in 2020, 5 million in 2021 and 9 million is 2022. Production may reach 15 million boxes in ten years. Although Washington state leads the USA by far in apple sales, such a huge ramp-up of a new variety has never been tried before. Cosmic Crisp was bred from Enterprise and Honeycrisp variety apples at the Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee, Washington. The apple rates high in flavor, color, storage and resistance to disease and disorders. The industry believes consumers will like its sweet, tangy flavor more than that of Honeycrisp.

Apple Facts...25% of an apple’s volume is air. That is why it floats!... It takes the energy from 50 apple tree leaves to produce one apple.... At room temperature, apples ripen or soften 10 times faster than if they were refrigerated.
