Joseph Sekiku, a social entrepreneur and Ashoka fellow in Western Tanzania, has been introducing dried fruit as a new potential source of income for rural farmers in the region. Dried fruit is relatively new to the country's market. This presentation also highlights some of the challenges of pursuing this as a business.

-Started in 1996 to address the problems of post harvest losses due to limited markets coupled with poor infrastructures and limited shelf life of fruits/vegetables

- In 1999, the need for marketing was expressed. So FTC was born and dedicated to the development of market demand in Tanzania for solar dried fruits/ vegetables.

Challenges……Dried fruits/ vegetables is a new and Non-traditional product in Tanzania.

......Limited financial support from Government and FUNDERS bothproduct and Technology development. e.g. improving on packaging and establishing right infrastructure needed for fruit processing.

…… Product promotion in country is difficult and expensive. Travel and media coverage and Participation in trade fairs is very expensive.

….Regulatory frameworks demand food certification (Tanzania Bureau of Standards – TBS or ORGANIC CERTIFICATION for export market.

…..Difficulty in accessing loans for agricultural projects + High interest rates and short repayment periods
