PCC evacuation teams use two types of FRS radios: Model 1 and Model 2. Model 1 is being phased out and replaced with Model 2. If you have a model 1, Please contact your campus public safety to obtain a new radio. In the meantime, this training will review Model 1 first and then Model 2. If you have a Model 2 radio please go to the Model 2 section to finish your training.

Model 1 radios come in yellow, blue, and green. While their buttons may be in different locations, they all work the same.

On Switch/Volume On Switch/Volume

The numbers circled in yellow is the Radio channel.

People have to be on the same channel to talk to

each other. The Radio channels on Model 1 radios

have a top number and a bottom number. In this

picture the top number is 10 and the bottom number

is 12, so this is channel 10-12.

These are the radio channels for PCC. This chart is also found on the Public Safety website under the Evacuation Drill/Evacuation Team link. Make sure your radio is on your building's channel.

Step 1: Push the Menu

If you need to change your radio channel, you start with the top number first.

Step 2: Push the “+” or “-” Button

until you reach the top number that

you need

Wait for Beep. If the bottom

number is correct, you are now ready

to talk. If the bottom number is incorrect, you will have to change it

too.

This is the push-to-talk

button (PTT). You push

this button when you want

to talk and release it when

you want to listen.

1. Switch your radio on.

2. Hold the radio in a vertical position with the antenna up.

3. Position the radio 2-3” from your mouth.

4. If nobody is speaking, press the Talk button for 2 seconds and begin speaking.

5. Remember that only one person can be talking on a radio channel at a time!

6. If you are a Floor Monitor(FM), identify yourself by your team role and floor. For example, the FM for Floor 1 would say “FM 1 to Building Coordinator.”

7. If you are a Building Coordinator(BC), identify yourself by your team role and building. For example, the BC for Mt. Tabor would say “Mt. Tabor BC to Public Safety.”

This is the battery charge indicator. It tells you how much power is available on your battery.

Three bars: fully ChargedTwo bars: partially chargedOne bar: will quickly fail in an emergency

Recharge your battery when you have one or two bars.

Model 1 and Model 2 radios can only talk to each other when the bottom number on Model 1 is 0 and the top number on Model 1 is the same number (or channel) as Model 2.

Talk Button. Push this button to talk on your radio. Release it to listen.

Model 2 radios do not use rechargeable batteries.

Lift up on latch to open the battery compartment.

Insert three AAA batteries and replace the cover.

This is where the batteries go.

Batteries for Model 2 radio are supplied through your division's office supplies.
