Model 1 Model 2
PCC evacuation teams use two types of FRS radios: Model 1 and Model 2. Model 1 is being phased out and replaced with Model 2. If you have a model 1, Please contact your campus public safety to obtain a new radio. In the meantime, this training will review Model 1 first and then Model 2. If you have a Model 2 radio please go to the Model 2 section to finish your training.
Model 1 radios come in yellow, blue, and green. While their buttons may be in different locations, they all work the same.
The numbers circled in yellow is the Radio channel.
People have to be on the same channel to talk to
each other. The Radio channels on Model 1 radios
have a top number and a bottom number. In this
picture the top number is 10 and the bottom number
is 12, so this is channel 10-12.

this button when you want
to talk and release it when
you want to listen.

2. Hold the radio in a vertical position with the antenna up.
3. Position the radio 2-3” from your mouth.
4. If nobody is speaking, press the Talk button for 2 seconds and begin speaking.
5. Remember that only one person can be talking on a radio channel at a time!
6. If you are a Floor Monitor(FM), identify yourself by your team role and floor. For example, the FM for Floor 1 would say “FM 1 to Building Coordinator.”
7. If you are a Building Coordinator(BC), identify yourself by your team role and building. For example, the BC for Mt. Tabor would say “Mt. Tabor BC to Public Safety.”
This is the battery charge indicator. It tells you how much power is available on your battery.
Three bars: fully ChargedTwo bars: partially chargedOne bar: will quickly fail in an emergency
Recharge your battery when you have one or two bars.
Model 1 uses rechargeable batteries
Model 1 and Model 2 radios can only talk to each other when the bottom number on Model 1 is 0 and the top number on Model 1 is the same number (or channel) as Model 2.
