WOSU Unveils New Digital ServiceThe past six months have rocked our world and our worldview. The global pandemic, the death of George Floyd and subsequent protests, and the indictments related to corruption and bribery at the Statehouse all continue to be covered closely by our WOSU news team.

Our team is mighty (named the best radio news in Ohio), but small, so part of our strategy is to elevate trusted sources for important coverage. On the page opposite, WOSU student Victoria Jenkins outlines some of our partnerships and a comprehensive website she is curating about the coverage of racial injustice issues.

We watch closely how our audiences access the news. Many of you appreciated the 56 consecutive press conferences with Gov. DeWine we aired on WOSU TV as the impact of the pandemic grew. Those pressers continue on 89.7 FM, wosu.org and the WOSU Ohio Channel. You may have learned about the indictments of the Ohio speaker and others from a WOSU news alert. Thanks to the assistance of our partners at the Statehouse News Bureau, the story continues to be thoroughly covered.

During this time of news at your fingertips, it’s important for all of our services to be available instantly. That’s why we’re excited to unveil a new digital service. For the first time, you’re able to watch WOSU TV streaming from our website at wosu.org and the WOSU app. With leadership from PBS, we’ve overcome many challenges and I thank our technology and digital teams for making this happen. Please check it out.

During uncertain times, it’s most important to turn to a source like WOSU for trusted journalism and as a place that curates and elevates the great work of partners across the community. Thanks for listening, watching and using our many digital online services to stay informed.

Stay Patient, Stay Safe.

We are providing important resources for our audiences to learn more about race, racism, bias, protests, civil rights, Black history and more. WOSU is curating a website with the latest news, podcasts, programming, virtual events and more to foster tough conversations.

From the May 25 death of George Floyd, 89.7 NPR News and All Sides with Ann Fisher have been providing ongoing coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement and calls for police reform. WOSU’s Community Conversations digital series has created provocative conversations, while WOSU’s “Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America” initiative shares the stories of Black families with the hope of building connections in our community.

We are also curating local efforts from many organizations such as The Wexner Center for the Arts, which is streaming films regarding racism and police brutality, and the Columbus Metropolitan Club’s weekly forums that have focused on the community question: Racism: Where do we go from here?

Additionally, WOSU is a partner and collaborator in the HeART of Protest community-wide arts initiative. Convened to be a catalyst for expression and a documentation of the global

social justice movement, HeART of Protest features unique art installations, performances and community events to honor George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests. You are encouraged to engage at kingartscomplex.com/heartofprotest.

We hope that this growing list of resources will enable you to become more engaged, more informed, and more inspired to stand up for diversity and racial injustice.

In the good ole days, presidential campaigns really did not begin until Labor Day. Summer conventions nominated candidates and they sprinted to win as many votes as possible before November. Some candidates did not even travel. Ohio’s William McKinley and Warren Harding hardly left their front porches and won the White House. (They also lacked Zoom and Twitter.)

Old is new again in 2020. Because of COVID-19, President Trump and Joe Biden are largely campaigning from their homes – Trump from the White House, or his country clubs, Joe Biden from his famous basement in Delaware. Whatever the style of campaign, WOSU and NPR are ready to cover it with fact-based reporting and thoughtful analysis. Ohio looks to have regained its swing state status, so as you digest (or ignore) the barrage of TV ads, our reporters will fact-check them, provide context and ensure we hear from as many voters as possible.

COVID will change how we vote. WOSU and NPR will closely monitor the vote-by-mail process, looking for any issues that could keep people from casting a ballot or cast doubt on the accuracy of the count.

2020 has taught us to expect the unexpected, so our calendars are

2020 – The Return of the Quick Front Porch Campaign

marked in pencil for the three planned presidential debates and one vice presidential debate. The first presidential debate is set for September 29 in Cleveland, followed six days later by the only vice-presidential debate. The final two debates are October 15 and 22.

Election Night could become Election Week. Because of late arriving mail-in ballots we may not know the results on the evening of Tuesday, November 3. WOSU and NPR are prepared to bring you days of extended coverage of the returns until we know who will take the oath of office in January. Stay with 89.7 and NPR. Campaign 2020 will be a wild sprint to the finish, even if the candidates run in place on the front porch.

the relatively small space of our broadcast studio. Radio hosts are considered “super spreaders,” people who generate lots of aerosols when they talk.

With that in mind, our current schedule allows for an hour between live hosts to air out the studio. The intermediate hours will still be live, but provided by a syndicated classical service from Minnesota. We hope this added level of protection for our hosts will allow us to continue to provide local content from the voices you know and trust, without facing a possible shutdown of our local studio, should one of our hosts test positive while asymptomatic.

All of us are adjusting to new normals these days, and the folks at Classical 101 are no exception. But we are all so thrilled to be back sharing music with you every day that we’ll take every reasonable precaution to make sure we can continue. Thank you for patience and understanding, and for all the kind words you’ve shared with us along this journey.

A Commitment to Safety You may have noticed that the host schedules on Classical 101 have been shifting a bit in recent months. A few words about how we’re making those scheduling decisions:

As we’ve been slowly bringing our local hosts back into the Classical 101 studios, our two main considerations have been listener service and staff safety. We’ve been following closely the developments in what is being learned about COVID-19 and how it’s spread, and the recommendations for keeping all our WOSU news and music staff safe. Bearing in mind that having even one of our staff test positive for COVID-19 would trigger a larger quarantine of the staff who are working in the building, we have been scrupulous about social distancing, masking, workspace hygiene and, particularly for our on-air hosts, airflow and aerosols.

Now that Christopher, Jennifer and Kent are all back on air every weekday, we felt it was important to consider the air quality in

Programming Highlights Music in Mid-Ohio continues this month with performances recorded in Central Ohio venues back when live performances were still happening. It’s a great reminder of the cultural richness we look forward to enjoying again.

This month on Music in Mid-Ohio, hear the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, pianist Gavin George with the Springfield Symphony, Carpe Diem String Quartet, violinist Siwoo Kim and pianist Anna Polonsky, and the Capital University Choir, just to mention a few! Join host Christopher Purdy Sundays at 1pm.

September on The American Sound features Eric Whitacre’s haunting choral work Water Night, George Antheil’s sparkling Serenade for Strings and Quartet San Francisco with Vince Mendoza’s tribute to jazz greats Mike and Randy Brecker. Join host Jennifer Hambrick Saturday evenings at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm on Classical 101.
