PSLE Marking Exercise
Please be reminded that all pupils do not report to
school on 14 to 17 October 2019 due to the PSLE
Marking Exercise. This was also communicated in
the July issue of iN-Touch. All pupils are to return to
school on Friday, 18 October 2019.
Home-Based Learning (HBL)
P1 to P5 pupils will have Home-Based Learning (HBL)
during the PSLE Marking Days from 14 to 17 October
2019. Pupils will receive learning tasks for the various
subjects in hardcopy and via the Student Learning
Space (SLS) or the respective subject portals.
Pupils will have the flexibility to complete their learning
at their own pace over the duration of HBL. As such, it
is hoped that pupils will grow to be more self-directed
in their own learning.
More details will be provided in a follow-up letter and
task sheet closer to the date. Related announcements
and guides will also be put up on the school website
for easy reference.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Haze Management
The school has put in place a school continuity plan to ensure the well-being of Frontierers
during a haze situation. We are ready to respond and take appropriate haze management
measures based on the guidelines corresponding to MOH’s health advisory (https://
www.moe.gov.sg/haze-management-measures).
To enable our teachers to continue to safeguard the well-being of our pupils, parents are
requested to keep the school updated on changes to pupils’ medical records. Pupils with related
medical conditions will need to have their medication, inhaler and spacer with them at all times,
and be encouraged to drink lots of water. The school is also equipped with air purifiers and
sufficient enclosed spaces to cater to our pupils.
As stated in MOE’s website on Haze Management Measures, the Ministry will consider
closing all primary and secondary schools if NEA’s air quality forecast for the next day is in the
hazardous level. Any decision to close schools will not be taken lightly as MOE is mindful of the
disruptions to families’ care arrangements for their children. The Ministry’s decision will take into
consideration all available information, health advisories and forecasts from the relevant
authorities that we have on hand regarding the next day’s haze situation.
As forecasts are based on prevailing weather conditions, real time conditions may differ
from forecasts due to factors such as unforeseen changes in wind conditions. To ensure smooth
operations in schools, and to avoid confusion among parents and students with adjustments to
real time conditions, we seek your understanding that MOE’s decision made the previous day,
as to whether schools close or remain open, will stand. Should school closures coincide with
national examinations such as the PSLE Examination, the affected examination papers will be
rescheduled and the examination period extended.
We thank parents for your support in this period and hope to continue to work with you to ensure that your children are safe and healthy when they are in school.

Frontier Character Award (FCA) and Edusave CHaracter Award (ECHA) 2019
The school-based Frontier Character Award (previously known as the Outstanding Character
Award) and the MOE Edusave CHaracter Award in Frontier recognize outstanding Frontierers
who are exemplary in character and values, and who can be role models to inspire others.
The FCA is a school-based award which seeks to recognize both Singapore citizens and
non-Singaporeans while the ECHA is an award by the Ministry Of Education (MOE) which seeks
to recognize only Singapore Citizens. The FCA and ECHA awards will be given to deserving
pupils who have excellent character and demonstrate strongly the school values and exhibit a
high level of civic consciousness.
The school has put in place a structured and rigorous process of nomination and selection.
More details on the recipients of both awards will be shared in due course.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Provision of Bottled Water at School Events
The Sustainable Singapore Movement strives to build a sustainable
future for Singapore and each of us has a role to play in it. Through our
actions and lifestyle, we can help to make Singapore environmentally
clean and sustain our resources for many generations to come.
In support of the Sustainable Singapore Movement, Frontier Primary School will no
longer provide bottled water at all school events. This is because plastic waste is
extremely harmful to the environment and our bodies. Thus, we would like to encourage all
guests, including parents, who are attending our school events to bring your own reusable water
bottles or containers and refill them at the water coolers which are available around the school.
Let us be active contributors to help make our country and the world a better place to live in!
Caring Teacher Awards 2020
The Caring Teacher Awards is organised by the National Institute of Education
every year to acknowledge teachers who go beyond the call of duty for the
holistic development of their pupils and to ensure that their charges grow up to
be confident and independent learners for our nation.
The school would like to encourage pupils and parents to nominate our teachers
who are deserving of the award. Nominations can be submitted online or via hardcopy forms
downloadable from www.cta.nie.edu.sg, also accessible via the QR code below.
Nomination forms can also be obtained at the Drop Box (near to the lift) in the school canteen.
The closing date for nomination is 20 October 2019.

UPCOMING EVENT
Children’s Day Celebration and Primary 1 to 3 Games Day
The school will be having its Children’s Day celebration on
Thursday, 3 October 2019. On this day, pupils will report to
school as usual but will be dismissed at 11.30 a.m.
No lessons will be conducted on that day and pupils will be
engaged in a concert, followed by ACES (All Children Exercise
Simultaneously) and a class party. ACES is an annual school activity
built into this year’s Children’s Day celebration where all pupils and
teachers participate in a mass aerobic workout, moving to popular
dance songs. As such, all pupils are expected to report to school in their PE attire. As part of the
school celebration, the Primary 1 to 3 pupils will also be having their Games Day.
Pupils are to bring their own snacks for consumption during the class party segment of the
celebration. Pupils who intend to bring food to be shared with their classmates must ensure that
the following criteria are met: packed in their original packaging or purchased from a licensed
caterer, and halal-certified. Please also note that there will be no recess on that day.
Pupils are also required to bring a Mother Tongue Language storybook for silent reading. Do
make the necessary arrangement to pick up your child if he/she does not take the school bus
home.
Pupils do not report to school on Friday, 4 October 2019 as it is a school holiday. Pupils will only
report to school on Monday, 7 October 2019.

Screen Time
One of the biggest challenges that parents need to manage is screen time for their children.
Read up about the following in the parent’s guide below to help you make sense of how you would like to
manage screen time with your child.
1. What are the effects of screen time?
2. Is my child addicted?
3. Does quality matter more than quantity?
4. Should I set up some rules?
5. What do I need to do?
6. Should I just go screen-free?

Supporting your Child’s Aspirations is No Child’s Play
For a child, going from primary to secondary school could arguably qualify as one of the most
exciting – and nerve-wracking – periods in their young lives. They will have to learn to settle into a
new environment, handle new subjects, make new friends and meet new teachers. Thus, it is
important for parents to play a supportive role during such transitional phases.
In our anxiety to provide the “right” kind of guidance to our children, we may inadvertently impose
our own beliefs on them. It is therefore crucial to learn to take a step back to recognise our
children’s aspirations, and help to put their dreams in focus.
Here are 5 tips that Mdm Choy Wai Yin, Director of Guidance Branch, MOE, has shared which
can help us play a more mindful role in supporting our children.
1)First listen, then communicate
Create opportunities for conversation with your children from time to time.
2) Papa (or mama) don’t preach
Avoid talking down to your children.
3) Show, don’t tell
Share your personal experiences to illustrate how we also face similar problems but
learn to overcome the challenges and issues.
4) No passion? No problem
Not all children have a singular passion or know what they want and like, and can do
well in right from the start. Thus, we could instead help them develop a basket of
strengths that they can use later on.
5) Work with schools
Communicate with our children’s teachers to better
understand their interests, strengths and aptitudes.

How can we teach our children to minimize waste?
Many of us are optimistic and hopeful that the younger generations will innovate solutions to fix the overload of waste that is currently straining our environment. The concept of climate change is huge. So how can we get children to grasp an understanding of this heavy topic with their tiny hands? They are human, and if we want them to grow into active and informed citizens, then we need to focus on teaching them how to enquire. Here are a few activities you can do that can help spark a discussion about reducing waste: 1. Exploration Diary 2. Packing A Waste-Free Lunch Box With Them 3. Compost Bin Experiment 4. Participating within the Local Community Tips for parents: Help our children learn about how they can reduce food waste by giving the following advice: Order only what you can finish. Order less food first and then get more later. Share dishes with your friends. Check your kitchen before going grocery shopping so you don't buy what you
already have. Cook a "use-it-up" meal every week using leftovers and what's already in
your kitchen. Donate excess food to Food From The Heart, The Food Bank Singapore and
Fei Yue Community Services.
