Salford City College Eccles Centre AS Media Studies Foundation Portfolio Masthead - The name of the magazine reads "VIBE". The title is red and black using a gradient effect. This technique causes the title to be alot more noticeable than a masthead that would just be in one bold colour. Main image – The main image is in the centre of the cover, and is of rap artist Eminem automatically portraying the genre of the magazine. The image is very eye catching as he is facing the camera using direct mode of address. The lighting of the image is very light, clear and vibrant, therefore reflecting the genre of music. Model credit: The model credit simply reads "Comes clean" it is obvious that this is the main story in the magazine as it follows the main coverline which is the biggest and most noticeable font on the page. Coverlines - The coverlines are situated around the main image, all in black red and grey capitalised, bold font. The coverlines draw the audience in as they mention other rap artists such as T.I and Jay- Z, therefore reaching out to the specific target audience. Main cover line - The main coverline is "EMINEM" this catches the audiences eye as it is in bold red font on a grey background therefore standing out. Colour - The colour scheme of the magazine cover is red black and grey. These colours are extremely strong and bold therefore suggesting the genre of music. Design Principles Used? - The gutenberg design principle has been used on this cover, as in the primary optical area the main coverline is shown, and in the terminal area where the audience looks next there is a direct question to the audience, "Who is the best rapper ever? You decide" this could be to create a sense of involvement within the viewer and make them want to buy the magazine. In the weak fallow area there is only one coverline which uses the smallest font on the page, therefore depicting it's less important than the other coverlines. House Style - This magazine follows a very similar style to other music magazines. The layout is very similar, for exmaple the use of the bold masthead and the main central image being the most eyecatching features for the audience. The coverlines are also distributed around the main image, each one in a different sized font depicting it's importance. Comment on how the design of the magazine cover attracts the target audience: The target audience for this magazine is younger males and females, aged 14-30 specifically interested in rap music. The cover caters for this target audience as it features Eminem as the main focus, who is a well-known rap artist. The magazine also features stories from other rap artists such as Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Jay-Z.
