ON SATURDAY, MARCH 5, the 2016OMEA-OCDA Elementary ChoirFestival was held at The Universityof Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. The festival is in its fifth year, butthis year marked the first collabo-rative event between OMEA andOCDA. Due to the enthusiasticsupport of the OCDA board andthe OMEA board, as well asOMEA’s East Central Region,OMEA Districts 4, 6, and 8, andthe Jackson High School ChoralBoosters, this event was fully andgenerously funded. In fact, theevent was extremely successful fi-nancially, coming in at more than$1100 under budget.

A record high number of ninechoirs participated this year, rang-ing in age from third grade throughsixth grade singers. All nine ofthese groups are non-auditioned,their numbers range from 50 to135 members, and their rehearsaltimes vary from once per week for45 minutes to five days per weekfor 48 minutes. All groups did atremendous job and performed toa full house all day long.

The two clinicians, both ofwhom are experts in the children’schorus world, were Dr. Lisa Wongof the Cleveland Orchestra YouthChorus and the College ofWooster, and Jennifer Call of the

Oberlin Choris-ters. NAfMEImmediate Past President NancyDitmer was the Master of Cere-monies, and Dr. Grant Cook of TheUniversity of Mount Union wasour host. The beautiful choral facil-ities at Mount Union were the per-fect venue for the day, and severalmusic education students fromMount Union and The Universityof Akron were gracious and helpfulassistants throughout the festival.

Each choir performed threepieces of repertoire, worked in aten-minute on-stage clinic withone of the clinicians, and joinedwith two other choirs to perform a

combined piece, Mark Patterson’s“If.” OCDA commissioned Patter-son to compose this piece in honorof the fifth annual festival and thefirst collaboration. He set EmilyDickinson’s poetry to music, and

the choirs joined together to pre-miere the new composition.

It is the shared goal of bothOCDA and OMEA to see this festi-val grow and expand throughoutthe state, reaching all five regions

of Ohio, to serve and be accessibleto as many elementary teachersand students as possible. Thisyear’s festival is the perfect startingpoint to accomplish such a worthygoal. $
