From Your Chairperson

Hello Swimmers,

I’ve just received the first set of results from Sue for the Counties, and what a set!! Too many good swims from too many for me to mention individually but a huge well done to you all!

Please remember to wear your club hat when representing the club, I know Sue had to give out at least 3 on the day! Hi All,

February and March are probably our busiest as far as galas go and we are now in the middle of the Sussex County Championships. Thank you to all our volunteer coaches, who have done a great job preparing the swimmers for their galas.

We are now part of the SSK (Sussex, Surrey & Kent) Swim21 Network which has just achieved official accreditation. Initially there are ten other clubs in the network: Atlantis, Crawley, Dorking, East Grin-stead, Hailsham, Leatherhead, Mid Sussex Marlins, Redhill & Reigate, Shiverers, RTW Monson, We hope that working as part of a network will benefit the club in swimmer development initiatives, sharing of officials, etc. There is certainly a lot of coaching expertise between us. Mark Brown

(swim21 co-ordinator), Sarah Whitcombe (coach) and I have been representing the Club on this.

Brighton Dolphins, 07/02/15 What a super gala we had, the swimmers did themselves proud! Team spirit was great and I know they will have gained from the experience and the feedback they received on the night (if they came to see me or Gareth after their race!). As this was a development gala I was not looking for the win, indeed many found themselves not doing their favourite strokes. Those who did the butterfly would probably not choose to enter the event but this showed they could do it. Unfortunately not all teams played the game as was obvious from the runaway leaders both in the skill level of the swimmers and their times - we were told not to bring any swimmers of county level, but some were there!

77% of our individual swims were PBs, with fab 1st places coming from Daniel Fernandes and Becky Smith. Well done to all who took part!

Thank you to our lovely helpers - Mark Savill (referee), Helen Smith (judge), Tracy Alman (timekeeper), Helen James (team manager), Gareth Matthews (coach) and Dan Boreham (who did all the split times for us). My daughter Heidi led pre-water and helped Helen with the team, mainly at the shallow end for the relays (made up for not being selected to swim!!)

Finally, very well done to our new young officials Nic Savill, D'Arcy Kosla-Rule and Harrison Fletcher. All three passed their time-keeper tests at the Dolphins gala and are now officially an ASA timekeeper. They will now progress to their J1 (judge) training. This is brilliant for the club as we are always on the lookout for new officials without whom we cannot run galas. Well done guys! If you would like to get involved please come and see me poolside in training - your club needs you!

Head Coach Report continued Rushmoor Royals Level 3 Meet, Aldershot Garrison Pool, 07/02/15 We had a late invite to a Rushmoor gala and Lewis Cox decided to enter. Staring off with the 50m butterfly, Lewis swam it in 31.33 seconds, an improvement of 1.28 seconds. In his 50m freestyle Lewis was chasing a 28 second county time, but unfortu-nately just missed it with 28.07, another PB and so close! A solid swim in the backstroke followed and then final PB of half a second in his breaststroke. Lewis was accompanied by his Dad and coach Oli Cox. Oli said how impressed he was with Lewis’ overall attitude and focus on the day, performing pre water before each race. His efforts were rewarded with 3 medals out of 4 events, great for a level 2 meet. Well done Lewis!

Atlantis Meet, 08/02/15 In all 20 Littlehampton swimmers entered this meet, a final qualifying opportunity for the counties. It was an early start here with a 7.30am warm up for our 400m freestyle swimmers Madi Walker and Lewis Smart. Both achieved fab PBs, each winning their event and achieving county times, indeed Lewis’ was a regional base time, brilliant! Lewis also won the 200m backstroke and came 2nd in the 100m butterfly (with a 16 second PB and another regional base time!!). More gold medals were won by Ella Porter and Sam Munro. Silver came from Lewis Cox, Sam Munro, Ella porter, William Redwood, Abby Smith, Archie Strow-ger and Madison Walker. Bronze medals were won by Jessie Brown, Lewis Cox, Tom Jefferis and William Redwood. County times were either improved or achieved at the meet by Jessie Brown, Sam Munro, Ella Porter, Lewis Smart, Matty Smith, Madi Walker and Sophie Wayman. Well done to all who swam.

Thank you to all our helpers: Our team managers Oli Cox and Pip Redwood; and Sarah Whitcombe, Donna Strowger, Mark Savill and Sally Hodges who all officiated. Congratulations also to Donna who passed her timekeeper test here.

Novice Gala, Lancing College, 21/02/15 Wow, another great Novice Gala with 40 swimmers competing! This was the sixth year we have run the Novice Gala and the first time we have invited our swim school members to take part. It was a delight to watch the children race, many of them for the first time. The atmosphere was great, a lovely introduction to competitive swimming. There were some pretty nippy swim-mers too with several ASA Competitive Performance Awards being achieved:

Backstroke Bronze Sprint Award – Becky Smith, Marissa Netherwood, Ella Napier, Isabel Cooke, Ella Thornburg, Bethany Groves, Abigail Pendleton, Georgia Slade

Butterfly Bronze Sprint Award – Ella Thornburg, Maisie Wickens, Sebastian Dedman

Freestyle Bronze Sprint Award – Ella Thornburg, Marissa Netherwood, Maisie Wickens, Georgia Slade, Abigail Pendleton, Sebastian Dedman, Joe Jackson

Breaststroke Bronze Sprint Award – Becky Smith, Ella Thornburg, Marissa Netherwood, Maisie Wickens, Luke Frost, Sam MacCallum

Silver awards were achieved by Luke Frost (backstroke and freestyle) and Maisie Wickens (backstroke)

A fantastic well done to all the swimmers!

Thank you to all our wonderful helpers:

Club parent helpers (only two of whom had children swimming): Helen Smith, Gareth Matthews, Kerry Iden, Helen James, Donna Strowger and Melissa Mantle.

Swimmers who helped: Harrison Fletcher, Turner James, Callum Strowger, Matty Smith, Regan Matthews, Charlie Hodges, Alice Mantle, Anna Mantle, Abby Smith, Holly Alman, Felicity James, D'Arcy Kosla-Rule, Nic Savill, Sam Munro and Heidi Cameron.

Sussex County Championships, 22/02/15 - 15/03/15 The Sussex County Championships started off with the long distance races where we had our highest ever entry of 8 swimmers. For most this was the first time they had swum the event in a long course pool, much harder with fewer turns and the reason why long course times are slower than short course times. All achieved log course PBs. First off for the girls in the 800m event was Anna Mantle who showed everyone exactly how to start with her great streamlining and underwater dolphin kick, coming up ahead of all the other swimmers. Anna’s time was 11 seconds faster than her short course time, 19 seconds faster than her converted time, a great result! Madison Walker followed with another good PB on both her short course and converted time. Next up was Jessica Brown, followed by Jess Frayne, who both completed the PB trend for the girls! Archie led the boys in the 1500m event, followed by William Le Merle, Charlie Hodges and Lewis Smart who all beat their converted times, Lewis by a massive 25 seconds! Archie, William and Lewis all swam Regional Base Qualifying Times, whilst William won his event. All of the swimmers demonstrated excellent pacing, which having now swum the event long course they can build on.

Last weekend proved just as exciting, with plenty of superb racing, PBs from nearly everyone, 22 club records and 15 finalists. For me, one of the highlights was having 3 girls in the 200m butterfly – Abby Smith, Emily Pryke and Jessie Brown. None had ever swum this tough event long course before. Emily went 10 seconds faster than her short course PB, achieving her first club record. All were fab! Anna’s great starts continued to stand out above the rest, whilst Georgie Howell swam a superb 100m freestyle showing us she had found her legs! Wow, what a kick!

Lewis Smart was the only swimmer to achieve an automatic regional qualifying time in his 200m breaststroke, along with 7 base regional qualifying times. This year the automatic regional times are exceptionally hard as they have reduced the number of swimmers who will be accepted this year to allow for more finals to be swum. This will be around 60% of last year’s num-bers, a huge difference, coupled with the change to age at 31st December.

Congratulations to the others who also achieved regional base times: Jess Frayne (1), Charlie Hodges (3), Will Jagger (2), William Le Merle (6), Anna Mantle (2), Sam Munro (2), Abby Smith (1) and Archie Strowger (4).

Will Jagger won the 200m freestyle men’s championship again, maintaining his place as the fastest distance freestyler in Sussex.

Other Gold medals were won by Charlie Hodges (100 back) and William Le Merle (200, 400 & 1500 free).

Silver medals were won by Charlie Hodges (50 & 100 back); Lewis Smart (1500 free, 200 free, 400 IM, 50 fly & 400 free) and Archie Strowger (400 IM & 100 fly).

There were plenty of bronze medals too from Jessie Brown (200 IM); Charlie Hodges (200 & 400 free); Will Jagger (50 back); William Le Merle (400 IM, 100 back & 100 fly); Anna Mantle (200 IM & 50 free); Lewis Smart (100 back, 200 breast, 100 fly & 50 back); Abby Smith (50 breast). It was wonderful to see the grins on the faces of those who won their first county medals!

Currently our age group boys are laying a fabulous 3rd out of the 17 Sussex clubs competing. We are in 10th place overall.

In the individual points positions our current top scorers are William Le Merle in 2nd place and Archie Strowger in 5th place for the 12 yr boys; Anna Mantle in 2nd place and Madison Walker in 3rd place for the 13yr girls; Lewis Smart is in 2nd place and Char-lie Hodges in 5th place for the 14yr boys. This year all the FINA points for all events are added together, so the more events qualified for and entered the more points you can achieve.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped over the last two weekends: Mark Savill (who has officiated at every session!), Sally Hodges, Helen Smith, Sarah Whitcombe, Donna Strowger, Daniel Le Merle, Tina Le Merle, Sarah Frayne, Nicky Smart, Alice Mantle, Melissa Mantle, Denise Brown, Mark Brown, Tansley Grace, Simon Howell, Phil Jagger, Callum Strowger and Amber Brown.

Good luck to everyone swimming in the Sussex County Relays this weekend and to those in the final weekend of the individual Championship. Also to Caleb Grace and Georgie Howell who are both competing in the British Para-Swimming International Meet in

Glasgow at the end of March! Very exciting, with top Para-swimmers from all over the world competing.

Happy swimming! Sue

Squad Coach Chat

Adlington Academy Hi Team,

This month we had our novice gala, it was a very good day with some amazing swims and Mums, Dads and families cheering really loudly for you all! I had a great time and hope you did too! My favourite bit was at the end when you all had your photo-graphs taken with your ribbons and then got sweets and a line of high-fives too!

Jackson Squad

Hello,

I’d first like to start by saying a big thank you to Denise, a lot of effort goes on behind the scenes by the squad coaches and of course our head coach Sue, that sometimes gets forgotten, and although thank you doesn’t seem quite enough for all their hard work I would still like to say it.

So Thank You!

A little reminder, training isn’t about who’s first or how many swimmers you can overtake, it’s about concentrating on improv-ing your technique and maintaining that technique every time you get in the water. This is lost if your just trying to get to the front, it can also ruin a session for the other swimmers in your lane.

Give yourself a 5 second gap and maintain your pace, this is why we put you in an order, or you can work together to find an order that means you can all swim continuously and not end up queuing at the end of the lane to do your turns.

February has been quite a busy month for a lot of Jackson Squad. We started the month with a 200m freestyle time trial which produced some good times for those who had never swam it before, and almost 100% PB’s for all those that had. All the Jack-son coaches are very impressed and would like to say well done and keep up the hard work as these time trials are very impor-tant for your improvement and finding the areas we need to work on with you.

Next up was the Brighton Dolphin Gala, this is a good friendly gala that gives you a chance to swim as part of a team and is always good fun with a great team chant after, which was very loud!

From Jackson Squad we had, Becky Smith, Bethany Groves, Connor Boreham, Seb Dedman, Josh Tomley and Joe Jackson. All got a chance to swim as part of a relay team and most got to do a 50m sprint.

In the 50m Breaststroke Connor swam a 1.01.12s placing 4th and Becky a 55.75s placing 1st both hitting PB’s

In the 50m Freestyle Seb swam a 44.76s placing 3rd, Josh a 46.60s placing 6th and Bethany a 52.15s placing 6th Seb and Josh both managed PB’s

In the 9under and 10under girls 4x25m freestyle relay Becky 21.0s and Bethany 22.9s got a 3rd place with their team

In the 9u and 10u boys 4x25m freestyle relay Seb 18.7s, Joe 22.1s and Josh 19.4s got a 3rd place with their team

Visit us on the web at www.littlehampton-sc.btck.co.uk

We had 12 Adlington swimmers there. For a lot of you it was your first gala, Isabel, Lottie, Hannah, Sam, Ollie and Aaron have only been with us for 6 weeks so were very brave!

Everybody swam PB’s which are Personal Best times. That means it’s the fastest you have ever swam that race. Jess swam a 7 second PB in her 50m freestyle, Libby beat her last 50m freestyle time by a massive 13 seconds, Abigail managed two 7 second and a 9 second PB’s in 25 m races. That means she was 7 and 9 seconds faster than last year. Eric did a 4, 5, 8 and a huge 14 second PB so in his Breast stroke he is now 14 seconds faster over 1 length than last year – Awesome !! Isobel achieved her ASA Bronze Competitive Performance Sprint Award for her 25 meter Backstroke and Sam got his for 25 metres Breast stroke. This is hardly ever achieved in Adlington so good swimming both of you! These are time badges that our swimmers can work towards for each stroke and distance.( You’ll see the older swimmers wearing blue and white T-bags or T-shirts) between races at galas and these are the badges sewn on the back of them)

Here are all of your fabulous achievements, well done everyone! Georgia—4 ribbons and 4 PB’s Isabel—4 ribbons and 4 PB’s Abigail—3 ribbons and 4 PB’s Lottie – 2 ribbons and 3 PB’s Libby – 1 ribbon and 4 PB’s Hannah – 4 ribbons and 4 PB’s Jess – 5 ribbons and 5 PB’s Peter – 3 ribbons and 3 PB’s Sam – 4 ribbons and 4 PB’s Aaron – 4 winner ribbons and 4 PB’s Ollie – 4 ribbons and 4 PB’s Eric – 5 ribbons and 4 PB’s

All of your coaches; Dan, Turner, Gareth and I are all very proud of you all, well done everyone!!

Keep trying your best all of the time, Helen xx

In the boy’s 8x25m squadron freestyle relay Seb 19.3s, Joe 21.7s and Connor 25.5s got a 6th with their team

Well done to all those who swam, I know there where a few concerns and nerves to start with but you all swam brilliantly! Don’t forget to always speak with your head coach Sue or one of the coaches’ poolside after your race as it’s always a chance to learn a few points to work on, and to hear a well done for a good swim. We will be working on those dolphin kicks for every start and turn as it was noticed that this can cost you time in the race, also your breakouts. And the main one which we keep talking about, learning to work as a team and focus on your race, not who or what is around you, as we did have some close calls with swimmers chatting at the end of their lane and only just noticing the swimmer coming in on the relay races.

The last one for Jackson this month was the novice training gala at Lancing College. We had a high turnout from Jackson squad, which was great as this is a fantastic teaching gala with lots of demos and explanations plus a bit of fun and some sweets at the end! I lost count with the amount of ribbons that you all got after some fantastic swims and some very close finishes. Hope-fully you all learnt a lot, enjoyed yourself and came away ready to compete in the next club gala in April, so check your calen-dars! If you have any questions about the galas or your swimming please ask, I’m normally about before and after your ses-sions, as is Denise, so if you’re unsure then please come and see us.

Finally, I would like to finish with a few more thank you’s.

First, to the whole of Jackson Squad for being quiet and listening when your coach is waiting to explain your next set, it’s been a massive improvement in your sessions.

And last but not least the Jackson coaches. Thank you to Denise, D’Arcy, Tyler and Callum for all your help

Gareth

Oh and don’t forget those tumble turns, tight streamlines and fast dolphin kicks, we’re aiming for at least 3!

Also your WATER BOTTLE, you’ll need it!!

Foster Squad Hi Team,

This month we had the Dolphin Team Gala in Brighton. It was a great evening with many of you taking part in a team gala for the first time. Foster Squad members chosen to swim were – Marissa, Amelia, Daniel, Ellen, Lucy, Hannah, Beth, Chloe, Law-son, Alfie, Ollie and Alex. Daniel won his individual race which was a brilliant 50m backstroke and we came 5th overall.

We also had our Novice gala for Adlington and Jackson swimmers and this is run by our older and more experienced swim-mers. Thank you very much to our helpers from Foster Squad - Heidi ‘Munchkin’ Cameron who led pre-water mobility and was then a Timekeeper and Matty who was a Heat Marshall. It was a great day and I got to see lots of talented swimmers who will be in Foster Squad one day!

Well done to Zak and Matty who swam this weekend at the Sussex County Championships. This is Zak’s first counties which are always really special. They are very hard to get to because you have to swim fast enough to qualify and he came 16th in his age group. That means that Zac is the 16th fastest 12 year old boy at 50 backstroke in the whole of East and West Sussex – an amazing achievement!

Matty swam in the 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 fly, 200 breast, 100 back and 50 fly. His best finishing position was 9th, just missing out on a rosette in his 200 breast but managing a big PB. Well done to both of you, brilliant achievements.

Good luck to everyone who is swimming next weekend at the Sussex County Relays, be fast and let’s hope for some medals and some toothpaste!!

Thanks to all of the wonderful people who give up their time to help coach on Foster Squad; Mark, Dan, Ryan, Alice and Charlie

Great work team

My address is [email protected] if you have any questions.

Keep up the good work.

Thorpe Squad Hi guys,

Well, there have been several galas this month and some huge achievements already at the Counties, so I'll get straight onto the details.

At the start of the month, some of you were selected to represent the Club at the Brighton Dolphins friendly team gala. These are always good fun with a lovely atmosphere, so I hope you enjoyed it, especially if it was your first time competing at a team gala. Swimmers there were Evie, Regan, Hannah E, Luke, Amelia, Zac, Stephen and Leah. You nearly all swam an individual pb, which shows how much you are all improving. Also, Zac and Stephen (along with Isaac and John) came 2nd in a 4x25m free-style relay, and, along with Hannah E came 2nd again in a mixed 4x25m freestyle relay. Well done to all of you who swam.

Next was Atlantis and just the four of you swam:

Madi: 1st 400m freestyle; 2nd 200m freestyle and 4th 100m backstroke,

Archie: 2nd 200IM and 5th 100m freestyle,

Abby: 2nd 100m fly; 5th 50m backstroke and 200IM; 6th 200m backstroke and 17th in the 50m freestyle where all the

finishes were so close; and

Emily; 5th 200IM and 11th 50 fly.

Well done to all of you.

We have just had the first two weekends of the Counties and I'm proud to say that you have broken many Club Records be-tween you! As Sue has emailed out the full results, I won't go in to details but will summarise your achievements:

Ollie: 6 events swum and a 6th in the 100m fly;

Will: 9 events swum; 3 1st places for 1500m free, 200m free and 400m free; 2 3rd places for 100m fly and 100m backstroke and 2 Club Records for the 1500m free and 100m backstroke;

Emily: 1 event, the 200m fly with a pb and a Club Record;

Abby: 3 events swum; 7th for 100m breaststroke and a Club Record and 3rd place for the 50m breaststroke;

Archie: 7 events swum; 2 2nd places and Club Records for both the 400IM and 100m fly; and

Madi: 7 events swum; 6th for 100m breaststroke; 7th for 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke and 2 Club Records for 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

So, if we include Ollie's Club Record from last month in the 50m backstroke, that is an amazing 9 LC Club Records broken in just a few weeks!! Well done

Moving on to up coming galas, please make sure you all enter our Last Chance Gala on the 12th of April. This will probably be one of the first galas where you can start achieving CQTS for 2016. I expect all of you to enter at least one event as it is a home gala so come and see me if you are unsure what event(s) would be best for you. The closing date is Friday 13th March and entries need to be in by 8:30pm.

Some of you need to look and see if you have qualified to enter the Crawley L1 Meet in April. The closing date for that is Friday 20th March.

I would like to see more of you entering Open Meets, now that you are in Thorpe. This gives you an understanding of where you are with your swimming, and what you need to do to progress. It also helps me to know what to work on with you. Please come and speak to me if you unsure of what to enter or when.

Finally, just to reiterate the Squad expectations, please overtake carefully but quickly. Allow others to overtake you by slowing down but continuing to swim. Make sure you bring plenty to drink, and that you drink it, and that you enjoy what you do!!

If you need to get in touch with me for any reason at all, including to let me know what you have achieved, you can contact me on [email protected]

iSwim Chat

Hi guys,

I really enjoyed helping at the novice gala on Saturday. Everyone did really well! We've already had a good start to the counties in the 800 and 1500m events, there were many good PBs and good swims. Over the next 3 weeks we have the rest of the counties and the county relay gala. Hopefully there will be a lot of PBs and RQTs. Look forward to seeing everyone there! If it is your first counties make sure you enjoy it and don't get too nervous!

Charlie

Hi everyone,

Well done to all of you that have swam at the counties! There have been so many great swims with loads of pbs and lots of you swam new club records. Also loads of you have got into the finals and won rosettes and even medals.

We still have 2 weekends of counties to go and hopefully lots more great times. There's also the county relays this weekend which should be really good!

Keep training really hard and focus on your technique and your underwater kick! Make sure you are poolside on time to do your pre water and if you have anything to ask me, I will be on poolside

Hello again,

It's been another really busy month . The Novice Gala was a huge success and congratulations to all our young swimmers. Good luck to all our swimmers who are taking part in the individual county galas this month. The county relays are this weekend and we are looking forward to some great performances from our teams. Finally a big thank you to our members who went along to present the cheque to St. Barnabas hospice, from the bonfire society.

BECOMING AN OFFICIAL!

All our gala officials are volunteers

Without them we could not run galas and would not have a competitive swimming club

All ASA level 3 & 4 licensed galas must have a minimum of 17 qualified officials This includes our Club Championships and home open meets

So this is where you come in!

Training to become an official is very straightforward and an excellent way of supporting your child’s swimming development. We are very fortunate to have our own licensed

referee, Mark Savill, who co-ordinates our official training.

For more information please contact Mark at [email protected] or come and speak to Sue.

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! Thank you!
