From: WoffordNews [email protected]: INVITATION TO OPEN HOUSE FOR NEELY EXHIBIT: "Prayers for My Daughter," Friday, Dec. 9 - 3-5 p.m., Converse

College Wellness CenterDate: December 2, 2011 at 2:13 PMTo: Wofford Staff [email protected], Wofford Students [email protected]

The Wofford community is invited to an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, atConverse College of an exhibition of artwork by Kris Neely, assistant dean and coordinator forstudio art and a 2002 graduate of Wofford. The exhibition, “Prayers for My Daughter,” is locatedin the Wellness Center at Converse. Friday’s open house is the only public showing of the exhibit. Details of the show, the artwork and the inspiration are below. Also, watch Kris and his father, Kirk, on “What’s Up Y’all with Amy Wood” at this link:http://youtu.be/p6NUNdt54uM

Open House: Prayers for My DaughterBy Kristofer M. NeelyFriday, December 9, 20113:00pm until 5:00pm

About the Art, from the artist:

When I was invited to create an exhibition of my work for the WellnessCenter at Converse College, I was honored by the opportunity. I wasalso overwhelmed. The space was large and divided by many doors. Theshow needed to provide a comforting climate while simultaneouslybrightening up this functional space. I tried to imagine what I wouldwant to see in the Wellness Center if I were a Converse student. Thisapproach did not seem to work. I still felt removed and distant fromthe project.

Then I watched my sixteen-month-old daughter, Allie Louise. The wayshe observes, reacts, and investigates her world is a delight towitness each day. This changed the question. What would I want mydaughter to experience in the Wellness Center when she is a grownwoman?

I began to think of these pieces as simple prayers for my owndaughter, and by extension for every daughter who might experiencethem. You are invited to touch, open, and interact with these pieces. It is my honor to install them at the crossroads of so many importantservices on Converse’s campus.

I am personally moved that the opening date of this show coincidedwith Allie’s first full day as my adopted daughter. We celebrate herlife and her remarkable growth since she came to stay with us as atsix-weeks-old. These mixed media works intentionally adopt foundobjects that have gained a new home and purpose in this show. All ofthe paint brushes used in these paintings were given to me by mydeceased paternal grandmother, Louise Hudson Neely. My grandmotheralso went to her adopted family at six-weeks-old. Remarkably, Allie

also went to her adopted family at six-weeks-old. Remarkably, Allieshares her birthday. It seemed only right to use these inheritedartistic implements to create this show.

About the Show:This reception is the only time this show will be open for publicviewing during the installation.

To: The Wofford CommunityFrom: President Dunlap Those who attended last year’s performance of the Mendelssohn Octet, led by the ClevelandSymphony’s concertmaster William Preucil, are unlikely to forget it. Nor will they want tomiss tonight’s performance in Leonard Auditorium by Preucil and friends of a lushlyromantic program by Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Bruch. Beginning at 7:00, this concertis one that would be standing room only in New York, London, or Tokyo, where it wouldcost a fortune. Tonight’s performance is free. You will someday kick yourself if you missit.
