By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will breakupon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadowof death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:78-79 NRSV
It's December already and we all know what that means, and NO, I'm not justtalking about it being 'National Bingo Month' or observing NationalFlashlight Day (December 21). In our faith community, December brings tous the season of Advent leading up to the celebration of Christmas! Oh, thetraditions and the comfort that these seasons bring; opening the little doors onthe Advent calendar, the familiar old Christmas songs, the joy of being withfamily, the warm glow of the Yule log, the cookies and eggnog and...
While our memories and celebrations may be familiar and comfortable to us,the truth found in and around these Christmas narratives presents challenges -it challenged the world then and continues to challenge us today. For as weconsider these stories, we find a family targeted by a violent political systemforced to flee their home and seek safety and welcome in a foreign land. Wefind a couple without a home being turned away as they seek shelter. Wehear titles like 'Prince of Peace' and 'Light of the World' - radical language inan empire where those titles were reserved for the Roman Emperor.
The stories may be familiar to us, but we dare not let them become dull to us.This is a time that shook the very foundations of the world. This is not just afamiliar old story, but is part of THE STORY and if God is still speaking, wemust keep listening and asking 'What new images and understandings mightawait us?' 'What light is waiting to be shown forth and to guide our feet in theway of peace?'
As we celebrate 'National Flashlight Day' or as we light the candles on theAdvent wreath; as we consider the bright shining star and as we pass theflame on Christmas Eve at the candlelight service, may we be open and readyto hear and see where the light leads us.
'By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us.'As we journey together, may the light guide our feet into the way of peace!
God's Peace to You,
Pastor Todd

The December mission is theChristmas Fund.
The Christmas Fund providesfinancial aid to retired and activeministers, as well as retired layemployees, their survivingspouses and children. TheChristmas Fund:
Provides bonus checks at Christmas to low-income retired clergy families and widowed spouses.
Supplements pensions of low income retired clergy and widowed spouses.
Provides emergency grants for financial crises in the lives of active and retired clergy.
Pays some health plan and insurance costs for disabled clergy.
Helps subsidize health plan costs for low-income retired clergy and lay employees.
In these times of economic hardship, contributions to this fund become even more critical for those who haveserved us and the U.C.C. For more information on this mission, see the A.I.M. bulletin board duringDecember.
During the month of September $1014 for collected for Shared Harvest.
Thank you for your generosity!
A.I.M.
Thanks From SONKA
As part of the United Church of Christ, we continue to live in 'covenant' with the wider church. Thisrelationship includes sharing our gifts of time, talent, and treasure with the Southwest Ohio/NorthernKentucky Association (SONKA), the Ohio Conference, and the national UCC setting through giving to OurChurch's Wider Mission (OCWM). Additionally, we participate in the four special UCC offerings each year.
At the SONKA Fall Gathering held in November, Lakeview UCC was recognized as one of seven churches inthe association that participated in three special categories:
Top 10 congregation in dollars given to OCWM
Top 10 congregation in per capita giving to OCWM
A 'Five for Five' congregation (participates in OCWM and thefour special UCC offerings)
Thank you all for your continued support and generous giving to thewider church!

PRESCHOOL
As everyone knows, the Lakeview Holiday Craft Show was fun! The collaborative effort between the churchand school helped out local vendors, and provided some community spirit.
Our canned food drive for Kings Food Pantry was a great success. We also collected boxes from our studentsfor Samaritan’s Purse. These are sent to underpr ivileged children around the globe. It is fun to trackthese and see where they end up! Hopefully, we have made a child a little happier this Holiday season.
December is a busy month at Lakeview Preschool. The children will be celebrating Christmas Around theWorld and making presents for their parents. They will learn about other children’s Christmastraditions. The children will also be practicing and performing in their special Christmas program for theirfamilies. Hopefully, we will have a visit from the man in the Red Suit!!
Our Preschool Open House for the upcoming school year (2016-17) will beon Thursday, January 14 at 6:30 p.m. Please tell family and friends whomay be interested. Tours are given by appointment during the weekdays.Just call 677-2288.
Merry Christmas!!Enjoy the season!

LUCC Productions returns this holiday season with "A 1940's Radio Christmas Carol." It's Christmas Eve,1943, and the Feddington Players are broadcasting from a hole-in-the-wall studio in Newark, NJ, and set topresent their contemporary "take" on Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Whether it's the noisy plumbing, missedcues, electrical blackouts, or the over-the-top theatrics of veteran actor, but radio novice, William St. Claire, this radio show is an entertaining excursion into the mayhem and madness of a live radio show. St. Claire'sescalating foibles and acting missteps propel the show to a simultaneously comedic and heart-wrenchingdramatic climax: St. Claire has an on-air breakdown, and begins to connect his own life with that of theclassic Dickens tale. In order to "save the show," the company improvises an ending to Charles Dickens'classic as a film noir mystery, featuring a hardboiled detective, a femme fatale, and an absurd rescue of TinyTim (and the Lindbergh baby) from the clutches of a Hitler-esque villain named Rudolf! Faye Greenbergand David Wohl have written four delightful period songs for the Feddington Players, and swingarrangements of many Christmas standards. Seamlessly combining drama and comedy, heartbreak andhope, The 1940's Radio Christmas Carol will sing its way into your heart.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT LAKEVIEW
Have you ever noticed something that needs to be done at church and wondered if itis anyone’s responsibility? The chances are it is one of hundreds of “unassignedtasks.” The Lakeview UCC budget is small and stretched thin. We are heavilydependent on volunteers. There are many things that get done by those who quietlydo them, most likely having never been asked by anyone or acknowledged byanyone. If you are aware of people who do things like this, please let Lois know sowe can make others aware in The Link.
Chris Ennis and Keith Vogler serve on the Lakeview ExecutiveCommittee as Facilities Coordinators. In that capacity there is a lot ofwork that goes on behind the scenes like fixing broken locks, patchingholes in the plaster, repairing the pews, trouble-shooting the HVACsystem, etc. Basically, they do at Lakeview what you do to maintainyour own homes, sometimes on an emergency basis. They are theLakeview handymen! If you notice something that is in dis-repair, feelfree to let one of them know or contact Lois in the church office, who hastheir numbers on speed-dial. Thanks, guys, for ALL you do!!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU ….This month we continue introductions of those who chose to covenant inmembership with LUCC on October 4, 2015.
Virginia Bishop has a connection with Lakeview that dates back to heryouth. She and her family attended St. Paul’s Evangelical and ReformedChurch in Fosters before that church merged with other churches in the areato eventually become Lakeview UCC. Life got in the way of regular churchattendance until she decided to return to “her” church in March, 2015. (Herdaughter was married at Lakeview in 1995, and she attended a few timeswhen Dave Schwab was the pastor. She has always considered Lakeviewher church.)
Virginia was born in Blue Diamond, KY, near Hazard. When she was 7 her father got a job at FisherBody, and the family moved north to Mason. Virginia graduated from Mason H.S. She worked as a telephoneoperator in the early 60’s, in the days before direct dialing, when the operator placed the call for customers. She married in 1963; but in 1965 when her daughter, Melissa, was just 5 months old, her husband was killed inan auto accident. She remarried in 1970 and had a son, James. She has been single since 1980. Melissa ismarried and lives in Columbus. James is single, and lives with Virginia. She has no biological grandchildrenbut has a “surrogate” grandson, Brandon, in Columbus. (Brandon is a neighbor of Virginia’s daughter.)Virginia had one brother , now deceased.
After Virginia’s divorce she went to work for McDonald’s, first working part-time and then, after variouspromotions, she was named manager of the restaurant in Wilmington. She was managing the LebanonMcDonald’s at the time of her retirement in 2008, the culmination of a 29 year career with Ronald McDonald.Virginia is a graduate of “Hamburger University” in the Chicago area. (That is no joke!)
Virginia lived in Mason from the age of 7 until 2006, when she moved to a house off Butterwor th Roadin Maineville.
In retirement Virginia has enjoyed spending time with her longtime friends, going out to eat or to the movies. She travels to Columbus quite often to visit her daughter and son-in-law and her surrogate grandson.
Virginia knew that she wanted to renew a connection with a church family but found it somewhatdifficult to take the step of returning to church. In March she took that step through Lakeview’s doors and hasrarely missed a Sunday since then. Virginia says that she found a very caring atmosphere at Lakeview, thefamily atmosphere that she was seeking. She finds Pastor Todd very engaging as well. She has served as aGreeter on Sunday mornings several times and is looking forward to being involved in some of the outreachwork that Lakeview does through AIM. She has attended the Just for Lunch outings as well.
Welcome back to Lakeview, Virginia!! ~Submitted by Linda Overholt

By the #from an Ohio prison
Every visiting day he shavesand stands by the doorwaiting for a pass to arrive -but just like last week, the pass does not come.
When night falls, once again,he stand by his cell door, waiting for a letter to arrive,to let him know he’s not forgottenand someone cares.
“Do you have a letter for me?”he asks the guard, who only shrugs, and walks on by. He can’t admit it,but you can see it in his eyes,he knows he is alone & unwanted.
He has come to learn thatbeing alone and unwanted is the worstdisease any human can experience. For other diseases there are medicinesbut none, none at all for being unwanted.
Unless there be willing hands to serveand a caring heart that lovessurely this diseasecan never, ever, be cured. Why do I write such sad words?
Because you see, I am he,the man standing by the door.I am in prison now, and so it seems,my name and Iare important no more. (signed #384353)
