Their Excellencies Speak

Greetings all,

20 years ago today, as We write this, the Shire of Southron Gaard became a Barony. The Baronial Investiture

was held at the Great Hall in the Arts Centre, following a tournament and Arts and Sciences display at

Abberley Park, and a pot-luck revel the night before. The Great Hall was a fantastic venue for John and

Ceinwen, King and Queen of Caid, to recognise what the people of Southron Gaard had achieved and to

elevate Sigurd and Eleanora to be the founding Baron and Baroness.

We hope that you will all be able to join us as we celebrate Southron Gaard's 20th Anniversary, as well as the

50th year of the Society - commemorated in the Known World Tapestry, which will be there thanks to the

efforts of Mistress katherine kerr. We have recently been enjoying looking through old photograph albums,

and the relics of the Barony, to find things for displaying at the 20:50 event, and would ask that if you have

anything suitably historic, you bring it along too. It's good to reflect on our own history as well as that of the

many times and places that we study, after all.

Alongside our history, it is good to look to the future, and thus we look forward to reading the letters of

intent, and witnessing the tourneys that select our new Champions. The list of those that have previously held

those positions can be found at http://sg.sca.org.nz/barony/champions.shtml, and so can some examples of

past letters, if you're unsure of how to go about composing your own.

We also look forward to recognizing the many and varied contributions of our populace to the barony. Thus

We request that you let us know of any who inspire you in the arts, who are unfailingly courteous, or whose

service to the barony you feel may have been overlooked.

Along with Baronial Anniversary, this month will also see the first of the Baronial Open Homes - as

previously noted, these are informal, ungarbed occasions and a chance to work on projects, or get help for

them when you're stuck, talk plans, watch a movie, share a potluck meal, or just hang out at Our homes. We

aim to have these about every six weeks, alternating between our houses, starting at Ginevra's on the 3rd of

April.

In Service to the Crown,

Richard and Ginevra

From the Officers

Seneschal’s Comments

Greetings good gentles all,

I hope everyone's feeling as excited about the society as I am, because we're a volunteer

organisation, and we need your enthusiasm for the good of us all. New additional positions we need to staff

include:

Arts and Sciences Officer

Chatelaine

To me, these are two of the most important positions possible. Arts and Sciences are a big part of what

makes the SCA great, I always love seeing people's great things, and learning about how they were made. And

of course the Chatelaine helps us greet more people.

And of course, we're always happy to hear from potential stewards, cooks, or teachers of any of the various

skills that make up the middle ages as they should have been (whether that be practical, theoretical, or

martial). If you'd like to apply for these positions, or have any other ways you'd like to share your enthusiasm,

please get in touch.

Yours in Service,

Maximilian von Monsterberg.

Vacancies

If you are interested in a role please review the job outline at

http://sg.lochac.sca.org/docs/OfficerDescriptions.doc Please note that all officers must be SCA members.

Chatelaine

The Barony needs you! Our current Chatelaine, Sir Philippe, is finishing his term.

If you would like to share your enthusiasm with the public, and welcome new people to the world of the Laurel

Kingdoms, then I would love to hear from you to be our next Chatelaine.

Applications close on Wednesday the 13th of April. Email your application to: [email protected] with

copies to [email protected] & [email protected].

Arts and Sciences

We're seeking a new A&S officer. Excited about Arts and Sciences? Want to encourage more of it, or make it

happen differently in the Barony? Please feel free to discuss the role with Agnes, it doesn't actually involve running

classes every week.

Applications close Wednesday the 13th of April. Email your application to: [email protected] with

copies to [email protected] & [email protected].

Her Excellency Ginevra on the delightfully weird and wonderful knitted Stag Hat katherine kerr on how notes pinned to abandoned babies, lovelorn letters and dodgy wills bring long-

show someone how to do it. Or talk to someone about your best piece of garb, or ask about any problems

you're having with things like felled seams or gussets. Polish some armour, fletch an arrow, learn a song.

Bring your photo albums from years past to see how far we have come and to remember people from

times past.

Lady Jadwiga, creator of the Tapestry will be giving classes on the Bayeaux stitch, as well as tours

around the Tapestry.

We'll be eating any remains from the Repast as a shared lunch, but you might want to bring your own

nibbles to last out the day.

Members of the Lochac Brewers, Vintners and Imbibers Guild will be attempting a demonstration of

medieval brewing techniques on the concrete pad behind the hall. They'll be discussing brewing and will

also have a few brews made previously for you to sample.

Five Minutes of Fabulousness: take a couple of minutes to enthuse about your favourite thing,

discovery, craft, activity, and let others know why they should consider taking and interest.

Offers of A&S items or help with the Saturday repast or of entertainment to Mistress katherine kerr

Heorot Bake-In

Barones Eleanora

Here’s a fun thing to do on Good Friday – invite your CF camping pals over to practice some of your camp

baking on the barbeque. We generally camp with two hooded BBQs which double as ovens plus some gas

burners but baking in a BBQ can be a bit tricky so we decided to have a practice.

The menu

Bread: white bread, ½ wholemeal bread, spice cake

Pies: ember day tart and Lombardy custard

Mains: beef stew, baked and glazed vegetables

Dessert: spotted dick

Countess of Kent’s Spice Cake

This is from a book that was published posthumously in 1563. The redaction is by Elizabeth David, 1973.

1 kg plain unbleached flour

30 g baker’s yeast

2 tsp salt

150g cream

420 g milk

120 g caster sugar

3 eggs

340 g currants

170 g ground almonds

1 – 2 tsp rose water

225 g butter

1 nutmeg grated OR 3 tsp mixed spice

85 g sherry

2 Tb milk + 2 Tb sugar for glazing

1. Put flour, salt and sugar into a very large mixing bowl and in the oven for a few minutes to warm it.

2. Warm the cream (warm, not hot) and mix in the yeast.

3. Warm the milk to blood temperature.

4. Stir the yeast/cream mix into the flour, add the warm milk and eggs and mix it all to a light dough.

5. Cover and leave to rise for about 1 ½ hours on until at least doubled in size.

6. Prepare the other ingredients:

a. cut butter into lumps and soften

b. mix the almonds with the rose water

c. soak the currants in the sherry

7. Once the dough has risen punch it down, turn it out onto a clean, floured bench, and start to knead,

adding the other ingredients, continuing to knead until they are will mixed in. [warning – this is very

messy]

8. Put the dough into buttered, warmed tins – three normal sized loave tins or two large ones, or you can

make it in a deep cake tin.

9. Cover the loaves with a clean cloth and leave them for 15 – 20 minute or until they have risen by half

again and the tops are light and spring back when touched.

10. Pre-heat your oven to about 190 - 205 C. If your oven tends to run hot choose the lower option.

11. Bake for 15 minutes and then cover the tops of the loaves with a sheet of greaseproof paper – this

deflects the heat a bit and stops it burning. Bake another 30 minutes or until a skewer comes out

clean.

12. Once removed glaze the top with a sugar / milk glaze.

13. Leave in the tin until its cooled enough to easily slip out.

Bookings have opened and are coming in to THL Aveline. We have had people offering assistance with precook and

hall help; more are welcomed, particularly with entertainments for the Ramblers' Repast. Announcements regarding the

Championships are to come from Their Excellencies. We are also encouraging people to being historic materials and

A&S items for the Sunday, and to stay on for the Tapestry display public hours of 25pm.

If people have contacts in the hamlets, it would be great if they could offer billeting for potential visitors to help them

visit.

Update: As of time of writing we have 14 bookings for BA, all include repast, all but one are for the full event. At least

5 payments already received.

EVENT BID: Tournament Day 6th March Beth Kent

ACCEPTED: YES

DISCUSSION: Moved original event date from 28th to 5th. Moved to accept bid (Will H), Seconded by James.

Accepted by all. Heavy format likely to be a wounds tourney, or possibly a melee.

4. Discussion of proposed Kingdom Policy on Hamlets

Policy for review is available at: http://lochac.sca.org/seneschal/hamlets.php

DISCUSSION:

James has question regarding Assets. Barony owns them, they can have them. Discussion around websites they’re

allowed to have them.

5. Discussion of current Facebook presence and methods for ongoing communication with the populace. Currently we

have a variety of facebook groups, and a facebook page. These are not centrally administered, or promoted as a method

of communication and we don’t have any policy regarding mirroring content between these groups and the baronial

mailing list/website.

Things I would like to consider: Should the barony have a central Facebook group for communication between its

members? Should we have a crossposting policy, and if so, whose responsibility should it be? What kind of moderation

should we have, or code of conduct should we have, if we have a Facebook presence?

Commentary

Received.

NOTE FROM SENESCHAL: Several gentles have expressed concern directly to me that Facebook should not be a

replacement for Mailing Lists and Website. Personally as Seneschal the reason of having this discussion is to make sure

Page 10: From the Tower - September 2015 · 2016. 4. 3. · FROM THE TOWER April A.S. L PAGE 2 Chronic Rumblings Welcome to another From The Tower. I would love to see your stuff in FTT –

FROM THE TOWER April A.S. L PAGE 10

we can have a cohesive strategy around Facebook, and figure out a good crossposting strategy to make sure all

members of the barony stay informed.

DISCUSSION:

Some people concerned that they don’t want discussion to happen on Facebook. Some don’t want crossposting.

DECISION:

Deferred, settings to be investigated.

6. Hamlet of Wildmoor operation enquiries:

6.A Approval of Hamlet Archery Practices as official SCA events. It has been requested by the Hamlet that their regular

Archery practice be counted as SCA events for the purposes of public liability insurance. They will be using SCA Target

Archery rules, and have 2 Target Archery marshals.

DISCUSSION:

DECISION: All approved

ACTION PLAN:

6.B Request for 2 Baronial bows to be sent to the Hamlet to facilitate said practices. (Ownership to remain with the

Barony).

DISCUSSION:

DECISION: send down 1 takedown recurve and one black fibreglass one at BA once the bolts have been sorted.

ACTION PLAN: Bjorn to check string costings and get back to the financial committee.

All in favour

ACTION PLAN:

7.C Query arising from Constables report $400 damages to CF Site, how to code expense. By one of our members

(damaged gate), should this come from the event costs directly, or be paid for by the Barony.

DISCUSSION:

Event was free, so no financial report.

Weather was lovely, fighting was fun to watch, conversation was interesting, and food was delicious. 15 people and 1

dog attended. No injuries.

Event report accepted.

Basically all the details on there: one day classes (2 streams) with catered winter lunch at the church hall, day 2 follow

on classes for free at the scout hall. Not included as part of the formal event bid as Day 2 bears no fees, lunch, sign-ins,

etc. I may not make it to the meeting tonight: this is pretty self-explanatory. I haven’t booked anything yet, this is

seriously just a proposal. Costs will be food, (soups and pies) site hire and levies, costs for classes can be sorted by

tutors. Costs being kept down by not using the flash hall both days, having day 2 (if required) at the scout hall in place

of A&S

Proposal not fleshed out enough to be accepted, but the proposed date is good. Requested further information from

Agnes.

3. Discussion of current Facebook presence (Continued from last month).

Documentation on difference between a page and a group:

http://thesocialskinny.com/facebook-page-vs-group-a-facebook-marketing-dilemma/

http://brianshim.com/webtricks/facebook-page-vs-group/

Decision:

It was agreed to create a Facebook group on a trial basis (6 monthly review in September), to see if this would better

suit the needs of those Barony members who use Facebook. There is no intention to replace the current mailing list,

simply to cross post content, and allow a socialising space for those who want it.

4. General business.

1. We overpaid the CF Site, do we keep it with them as an extra deposit or want a refund?

Decision: Request money back from site.

2. Accepting CF 2017 provisional dates as dates for 2017.

Decision: As the proposed date can’t be moved at this point without swapping to another month decision was

to accept provisional dates for CF 2017.

3. What dates would we like to book for for CF 2018?

School terms must start after Auckland Anniversary Day. Which is 29 Jan for 2018.

Preferred dates to ask for 2018: January 20th to January 28th.

4. EFTPOS Costs

Exact costs from use of EFTPOS Machine at CF to be determined as part of CF Report.

Meeting closed 8:25 PM.
