The Summit Gets a Facelift

T he Summit’s award winning architecture makes it stand out as a unique, well-built and interesting environment. That will not

change, however after fourteen years, it is time for a little “nip tuck”. With that in mind, we are excited to share our plans for a new and improved Summit at Brighton.

While virtually every area will receive sprucing up to some degree, some of the major changes will add variety and life to the spaces that residents enjoy outside of their private apartments. One of our dining rooms will become a casual grill, with food being prepared right in front of you, an outdoor patio, and a menu that rivals some of the finest bistros.

Spring Arrives in Style

On March 28th, The Summit welcomed spring in grand style with a fashion show courtesy

of Stein Mart discount department store. The event was emceed by Janet Lomax, broadcast journalist and award-winning news anchor at News 10 NBC. Recently back in Rochester after interviewing First

Lady Michelle Obama at the White House, Janet gave a short background on each model as they walked the runway. Summit residents modeled beautiful spring fashions that ranged from casual to evening wear, while guests enjoyed champagne punch, fresh fruit and pastries. But what they enjoyed even more were the 20% off coupons that each guest received courtesy of Stein Mart.

Creativity Thrives at The SummitJoan Shulman – Jewelry Designer

Having an interest in art as a teenager, Summit resident Joan Shulman took her first class in drawing and painting at Mechanics Institute, now known as R.I.T., at the young age of fourteen. She later obtained her BA degree in Art History from the University of Rochester, where she also took courses

in drawing, painting and sculpture.

After college, Joan took courses in enameling and jewelry making. She participated in the Memorial Art Gallery’s Clothesline Art Show and Sale; had pieces of her art accepted in the Gallery’s Finger Lakes Exhibit; had a booth at the Waterfront show in Canandaigua; and her jewelry was also shown and sold in a shop in Honeoye Falls.

Joan eventually became interested in gas welding and was a member of the Artist in Residence program at Fairport High School for about twenty years. She taught welding to high school seniors, where they made key chains, jewelry and small welded sculptures.

Along with a partner, Joan owned Beads ‘n’ Things, a craft shop in Schoen Place. There, she taught classes in macramé. She also worked for the Nan Miller Gallery and assisted when they did out of town shows. For many years, she was a volunteer at One World Goods in Pittsford Plaza. She continues to keep her hands busy by repairing jewelry for them now.

As her vocation, Joan was a child welfare worker and then a volunteer Probation Officer. She and her husband Marvin, a retired optometrist, moved into The Summit in the fall of 2010. They have a daughter Wendy and son Peter, but both live out of state. Currently their granddaughter is studying in Israel for the year.

Let’s not forget to tell you about Max, the Shulmans’ long-haired 11- year-old gray striped tiger cat. Joan and Marv adopted him from Lollypop Farm about 3 years ago, when his original family had a baby that was allergic to this sweet-natured, lovable kitty. He is a friendly fellow and brings tremendous joy to both Joan and Marvin. Joan says, “He’ll lower your blood pressure just with the soothing sound of his purring.”

Never Too Old to Learn Something New

Through a partnership with Nazareth College, Summit residents have the opportunity to continue their intellectual growth through auditing courses at the college and attending mini-courses right at The Summit. Courses have ranged from history to literature;

classical music to sociology; politics to healthcare. Professors bring the classroom to us, and share their passion and knowledge with residents. Lectures are stimulating and thought-provoking, and spark great conversation among the residents.

Dr. Nevan Fisher taught a four-part course entitled China in the 20th Century. Resident Ilse Stern writes of her experience, “The course given by Dr. Fisher on China was a pleasure to attend. He was very articulate and informative, and gave us an excellent overview of the history and culture of China from the late Imperial Era to the present. It helped my understanding of the Chinese and their society, and gave insight into our relationship with them at the present time.”

Residents enjoy attending the courses and sharing their experiences with one another. Not only do these lectures spark conversation, but they also evoke great memories of when they were in school and the subjects they studied.

The Summit partnership with Nazareth has created so many wonderful educational and cultural opportunities, and residents look forward to the courses yet to come with each new semester. As the saying goes, “you’re never too old to learn something new,” and our residents will tell you, the saying is true.

The Summit Experience

While The Summit consistently receives high scores on resident satisfaction surveys each year, we

continually strive to do better. To that end, we are working with a local company called Brand Integrity to “Achieve Brand Integrity” at The Summit. In simplest terms, it is the process of discovering what The Summit Experience is, and then delivering that experience on a consistent basis – to be who we say we are.

We began the process by collecting the opinions of residents and staff through an on-line assessment and focus groups on what it is like to live and work at The Summit. Residents repeatedly said that “the staff is wonderful, caring and responsive” and staff said that they “love being with and serving the residents”. The results of this exercise told us what behaviors we all agree are essential to a positive experience, and through workshops we developed our culture belief and our service belief, which is:

It is our privilege to provide

experiences where people continue

to live fulfilling lives in a place that

feels like home, with a staff that

feels like family.

Staff are recognized and rewarded for delivering superior customer service, working well together as a team, and developing better ways of providing our services. This model encourages repeat positive behaviors in themselves and in others. We are already seeing employees nominating each other for recognition, as well as residents recognizing employees for their efforts. We will repeat assessments of residents and staff every six months to see how we are excelling in the various categories of delivering The Summit Experience.
