From Jerusalem to Minsk; from Mumbai to Sao Paulo, from Hong Kong to Atlanta Over the past eight years, we at The Temple have traveled across the world to see our Jewish roots

first-hand. We journeyed to Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Warsaw, Krakow, Berlin, and Munich. This spring we will explore our roots in Sephardic Spain. Our highlight, of course, is when at least 200 of

us travel every other year to Israel. These rich experiences in Europe offer us a unique lens into what thriving communities used to exist. But, none of us on these pilgrimages could have expected to see the emergence of such a vibrant progressive Jewish life in Europe. There is no greater testament to the vibrancy of Reform Judaism today than the growth and reemergence of congregations and communities around the world. The World Union for Progressive Judaism is instrumental in this historic renewal, helping to build and support Reform communities through congregational and leadership development, inspirational youth program-ming and the promotion of Jewish values and ideals.

In the former Soviet Union and in central and eastern Europe, after nearly a century of religious oppres-sion, the World Union is a driving force for growth among both new and existing congregations. We were amazed to see, for example, a thriving Reform congregation in Warsaw where over fifty young people joined us for Shabbat dinner. Similarly, we spent the afternoon at the extraordinary Reform seminary in Berlin which is training Reform rabbis to reinvigorate Jewish life in Eastern and Western Europe.

In Israel, the heartland of the Jewish people, the World Union answers the call for religious pluralism with Reform programs and institutions. The World Union presence grows in Latin America, Australia, and countries throughout Asia.

We as a Reform Movement have a strong mission to strengthen Jewish life and values in Israel and Jewish communities throughout the world by supporting and advocating a Reform approach to Jewish tradition.

Please join us for our annual Brockey-Rothschild weekend, beginning February 5, 2016, as we welcome World Union For Progressive Judaism President Rabbi Daniel Free-

lander. Rabbi Freelander will share the dreams and yearnings that have brought together our people in shared unity—helping us to transcend our individuality and become part of the reality of the Jewish people. See the calendar of weekend events on page 9.

Together, we will direct our hearts and minds to our brothers and sisters across the oceans - in Israel and in more than 40 other countries where the Reform Movement is nurturing the seeds of Jewish renewal and modern expression of our faith. We will celebrate a living, evolving Jewish spirit, old and yet ever-renewed, that graces that

sprit with a core commitment to each other, to our mutual responsibility, and to the prophetic call to redeem our world in justice in the image of God.

From Jerusalem to Minsk, from Mumbai to Sao Paulo, from Hong Kong to Atlanta—let us reach beyond geographic boundaries to celebrate the unity of our global Reform Jewish family.

Gather at The WellFriday, February 5 • Socializing 8 PM • Service 8:30 PMFirst Fridays is now The Well, a more evocative and accurate name for our Young Professional’s monthly, late Shabbat service. In the Jewish tradition, the well is a nexus for community, for physical, spiritual, and emotional nourishment, and for sacred encounters with the divine. The Well best describes what Rabbi David Spin-rad and musicians Sammy Rosenbaum and Eli Sperling have endeavored to create: an evening of soulful spirituality, fun socializing, and services that feel inclusive for people of all levels of familiarity and comfort with Judaism. To RSVP, email our Engagement Associate Summer Jacobs: [email protected] and for questions for more information email Rabbi Spinrad: [email protected].

The Temple Book ClubTuesday, February 9 • 7:30 PMWe will be reading selections from Dennis Ross’s Doomed to Succeed led by Harry Keyserling. As you know, Dennis Ross recently spoke at The Temple regarding his book and the history of US-Israel relations and we will continue this discussion.

Library NewsHow to donate books to the library: We often receive welcome donations to the library from our Temple family. When you have a donation, bring the book or books to the library and leave them on the shelf of the office window. If your donation is too large to leave on the ledge, leave them under the window. We will go through the donated books to see if we already have them, and we will also assess them to see if they are a good fit for our library. If not, or if we already have them, we will at that point add them to our give-away cart. Thanks for thinking of us when you have books to donate!

Hot Topics in Women’s Health: Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer Brought to you by Sandwich Salon and the WELC Tuesday, February 2, 2016 • 11:45 AM–1:15 PMThe Sandwich Salon and the Weinberg Early Learning Center, along with the Friends of Winship, team up for the first time to learn about one of the most important topics of our day—women’s health and cancer. There are few of us untouched by this critical issue, and it’s our obligation to learn about the risks and treatments available to us. Join us as we hear from a panel of specialists in the field, moderated by our very own WELC parent, Dr. Jane Meisel, an Assistant Professor in the Depart-ment of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory Univer-sity School of Medicine. There is no better place to do yourself this favor than with your Temple family, the group of women who will be here to support and love you, no matter what.

Box Lunch Sponsored by the Friends of Winship Cancer Institute. Babysitting available upon request. RSVP to Joya Schmidt at [email protected].

Daytime Discussion GroupThursday, February 18 • 10:00 AM (before Lunch and Learn)We’ll watch the film Shalom Y’all, with a running time of 59 minutes and starring Andrew Young, Kinky Friedman, and others. Traveling in a vintage Cadillac, filmmaker Brian Bain, a third generation Jew from New Orleans, sets out on a 4200-mile road trip though the American South. Making his way through Delta flatlands, small towns in Mississippi, suburban subdivisions, Texas ranches, and sprawling Sunbelt metropolises, he uncovers the unique and diverse history of Southern Jews.

Post B’nei Mitzvah Parents Sunday, February 21 • 9:30 AMCyber Dangers: Keeping Kids Safe in 2016 — *Parents OnlyThe Internet represents a relatively new challenge to parents of teenagers. Inter-net access can give teens an academic edge, help them explore their interests, and stay connected with friends and family. While it can be a wonderful tool for communicating and information gathering, it also contains many dangers. Some topics covered will be recognizing those dangers, teaching appropriate use of technology, empowerment of appropriate decision making, modeling behav-iors, and on-going ways to keep staying involved with you teen in that sphere. Bagel breakfast provided.

Our presenter, Ben Halpert, is no stranger to the dangers of the Internet and the anonymity it provides for those who mean harm to children. Ben spends his days as an information security practitioner for a Fortune 500 company and his nights as a champion for children in cyberspace. Seeing a void in online safety for children before they begin K-12, Ben created Savvy Cyber Kids in 2007. The organization teaches kids safety before they go online.

To RSVP, please contact Mark and Amy Adelman at [email protected]. For further questions, please contact Summer Jacobs of the Engagement Department at [email protected].

This program is for parents with teens who are in the year of their B’nei Mitz-vah through 12th grade by our Post B’nei Mitzvah Age & Stage Roshim—Scott Edlein, and Mark and Amy Adelman.

Join us for monthly meetings to figure how to take The Temple’s commitment to service to the next level.

Temple on the Road at The Renaissance on PeachtreeThe Rebirth of Jewish Communities in the Former Soviet Union with Rabbi Lydia MedwinFebruary 12, 2016 • 8:00-9:00 PM3755 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA 30319

After over 70 years of Communism, religious oppression and persecution, Jewish communities in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) have once again become vibrant. From Russia and Ukraine, to Belarus and the Baltic states, there are currently over 60 Reform Jewish congregations and six native-born rabbis, along with a full-time academic program to locate and train local paraprofessional community workers. In short, there’s been a blossoming of Reform Jewish life in this region. Join us to find out more about this inspirational and hopeful phenomenon. It’ll be a great way to enjoy a Shabbat evening.

Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Lobby Day 2016Thursday, February 11 • 9:00 AMJoin hosts Georgia Cares and Street Grace near the Capitol at The Historic Freight Depot (65 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive) in the continuing fight to end Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST). Our voices make difference: in 2015, Safe Harbor legislation had only a 30% chance of succeeding, but because of our voices it passed by an overwhelming majority. This year’s Lobby Day will focus on building community involvement and voter ratification of SR 7 (Safe Harbor) in the November election, a ratification that will enable Georgia to provide services and support to child victims of sex trafficking and further the principle that these children are not criminals. The event is free with a small charge for lunch. To register either visit http://www.gacares.org/2016-dmst-lobby-day.html or call (404) 602-0068. If you are attend-ing, please contact Rabbi Spinrad at: [email protected] and look for participants from The Temple just inside the entrance of the Depot. See you there!

Engage @ The Temple92Y: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader GinsburgSunday, February 28 • 2:00 PMRuth Bader Ginsburg was nominated by President Clinton as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court in June 1993, and took the oath of office in August 1993. Prior to her appointment, she served on the bench of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She was a Professor of Law at Columbia University, and earlier served on the law faculty at Rutgers. In 1971, she was instrumental in launching the Women’s Right’s Project of the American Civil Liberties Union. Throughout the 70’s, she litigated a series of cases solidifying a constitutional principle against gender-based discrimination. Ginsburg has written widely in the areas of civil procedure, conflict of laws, constitution law, and comparative law. Hear her discuss this and more as she is interviewed by Nina Totenberg.

Panel Discussion afterwards. To reserve your spot, please contact Joya Schmidt at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

Caring at The TempleOur Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pastoral need, providing homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We have delivered more than 500 soups, and nearly every step of the program—from soup preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us know about fellow congregants in need—is led by members of our congregation.

Thank you to our Caring at The Temple volunteers who delivered soup this month: Sandy Cox, Duane Cox, Rachel Lichtiger, Sue Lubin, Judy Maziar, Valerie Needle, Debbie Shelton.

To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholim (visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi David Spinrad at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

“FITTING IN”A SHORT HISTORY OF JEWISH FILM IN AMERICAA 6-week media series beginning Wednesday, February 24 at 10am

The course discusses excerpts from a half dozen important American feature films produced between 1927 and 2005. Each reflects, in a major way, not only the history of Jewish films but the changing Jewish experience in America. Gen-erally speaking the history of Jewish film in America can be seen as a gradually process of how Jews have tried to “fit in” and adapt to the challenges of life here over the past century. We begin with “The Jazz Singer” starring Al Jolson, which is generally credited with creating the modern era of “talkies,” in Hollywood.

Program Dates: 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30Time: 10:00–11:30AMPlace: The Temple in Schwartz Goldstein HallCost: $49.00 for all 6 weeksReserve Your Spot: Contact Joya Schmidt at [email protected] or 404-873-1731 by February 20.
