Visible learning
As teachers are busy with their work load, between meetings, planning, and marking. They distracted
with what they are teaching rather than what the students are learning. Teachers are focused on
resourcing, achieving, finishing the curriculum. They forget an important question, what is the impact of
what I am doing on a daily basis on my students’ learning? What is my impact on my students?
A well-known educator and a Professor called “Johan Hattie” introduced a development practical
approach called the Visible Learning
Visible learning is all about: “What works best for learning. This means an enhanced role for teachers as
they become evaluators of their own teaching. According to John Hattie, Visible Learning and Teaching
occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own
teachers.” https://visible-learning.org/
ASCS- Al Layyah school is very proud to take a step in implementing VL in all the classes starting from
Kindergarten. Teachers and leaders were trained on this great program and now both students and
teachers started to have a shared language of learning in the class.
Teachers implemented effective strategies to explain to our students where they are going (by explaining
the learning objective) How they are going (by using success criteria) and what they have to do next (By
effective feedback).
Our students started to show an improved attitude towards learning by implementing the learning
dispositions and language. Furthermore, they become more responsible of their learning knowing what is
their next step.
The learning process is all about helping the students in solving their own problem, and making informed
decisions. The learning Pit is a process of gradual learning; everyone is getting into the pit of learning
when faced with challenge. When a child says: “I am Stuck” it is a celebration and an opportunity to build
each individual’s learning capacity.
We want our students to embrace the challenge and to grow a growth mindset. This view creates a love
of learning and resilience which is essential for great accomplishment.

The Students Council participated in a workshop
about ‘expressing opinions regarding the rights of
the child in the UAE’, which was held at the
Sharjah Biennial Center for Children. Students
shared their views on what they dream about in
their schools, aspirations and suggestions, which
they then shared with the school principal for her
review and consideration. The principal has
listened carefully to their ideas and then assigned
them the task of surveying other students to get
more ideas on developing the school aspects.
Participating students were appreciated for their
active participation in the workshop.
