Bury the Dead

When Mary Magdalene went searching for our Lord at the tomb, she was distressed when she thought His body was stolen. She then stated to the man who she thought was a gardener, “they have taken my Lord and I do not know where they have laid Him.” By that statement, she acknowledged that our Savior’s death did not dissolve her rela-tionship with Him.

As Catholics we bury our dead in a Catholic cemetery, because we acknowledge that their death does not obliterate our relationship with them. We bury our dead because we believe that the body must be treated with rever-ence. As Joseph of Arimathea and the women who were with Jesus ministered to His body with care and reverence before being placed in a tomb, we also treat our dead with rev-erence. It is our Catholic faith that directs us to bury the body in a sacred place. The body is not a thing to be tossed aside; it is not a shell nor a husk but the body of the person we love. “The Church's belief in the sacredness of the human body and the resurrection of the dead has traditionally found expression in the care taken to prepare the body of the deceased for burial.

Cuando María Magdalena fue en busca de nuestro Señor en su tumba, estaba deprimida, pensó que alguien se había robado el cadáver. Ella le dijo a un hombre que ella pensaba era un jardinero, “Se

han llevado a mi Rey y yo no se donde han puesto su cuerpo” Al comentar esto ella decla-ra que aunque muerto, la relación de nuestro Salvador no se disuelve.

Como Católicos, enteramos a nuestros difun-tos en un cementerio porque reconocemos que aunque muerto nuestra relación continua. Enteramos a los muertos porque sabemos que el cuerpo se tiene que tratar con respeto, asi como José de Arimatea y las mujeres que estuvieron cuidando el cuerpo de Jesús con mucho cuidando y reverencia antes de poner-lo en la tumba. También nosotros tratamos a

nuestro muertos con reverencia. Es nuestra fe Católica que dirige a enterar a nuestros difuntos en un lugar sagrado. El cuerpo no es una caja que se tira en cualquier lado, no es un casco ni una cascara, es el cuerpo que una vez ocupo un ser amado. La creencia de la Iglesia sobre la santidad del cuerpo humano y la resurrección de los muer-tos, tradicionalmente a encontrado su expresión en el cuidado que se le da al cuerpo del difunto en la preparación de su entierro.

Mon Fils, celui que j'ai choisi”

On lit chaque année, le deuxième dimanche de Carême, un récit de la Transfiguration. Saint Luc l'introduit par ces mots: “Et voici qu'environ huit jours après avoir prononcé 'ces paroles', Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, Jean et Jacques...” Quelles paroles? Celles qu'il adressait à Pierre et aux disciples: “Il faut que le Fils de l'homme souffre beaucoup, qu'il soit rejeté...” Ainsi, dans l'intention du rédacteur. la Transfiguration est liée au mystère de la passion, de la mort et de la résurrection du Messie. Les disciples sont plongés dans un profond sommeil pendant que Moïse et Élie s'entretiennent avec lui du projet de Dieu et de son “exode” à Jérusalem. À leur réveil, ils le trouvent en compagnie des deux grands héros de la tradition juive. Pierre veut les installer dans ce lieu de gloire, car “il ne savait pas ce qu'il disait.” Quand la nuée les recouvre, ils sont saisis de frayeur devant la Présence de Dieu; et de la nuée une voix vient du ciel: “Celui-ci est mon Fils, celui que j'ai choisi “ Écoutez-le.” Dieu désigne le Serviteur annoncé. Puis Jésus reste seul avec eux. Par la suite, il dira à plusieurs reprises que chacun doit porter sa croix. Ainsi, les chrétiens seront glorifiés avec lui uniquement s'ils passent avec lui, par la croix. Cette histoire de la Transfiguration semble interrompre le mouvement du récit, mais le choix des images signale de façon non équivoque une action de Dieu: la nuée, le profond sommeil, les disciples saisis de crainte, la vision de Moïse et d'Élie, tout reflète, en effet, une manifestation de Dieu, des signes extraordinaires qui nous rappellent les apparitions majeures de Yahvé aux Hébreux. Saint Luc raconte par un choix d'images semblables la naissance et la résurrection du Messie. Sans de tels signes de Dieu, chacun pourrait croire que Jésus agit seul, sans lien avec les prophètes, isolé du Père et de l'Esprit dans ses enseignements, ses guérisons et ses autres miracles. La Transfiguration nous aide à réaliser qu'il vit constamment en lien étroit avec eux. Cet évangile nous rappelle aussi que le chemin de la gloire doit passer par la croix, pour Jésus comme pour nous.

Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home?
