Dear Harcourtians

Greetings

I feel delighted by the greater participation of the alumni in the 15th International Alumni Meet 2019, that was held on 23-24 Nov 2019 at HBTU Kanpur than the previous years. Over 300 delegates participated in this 2 days gala annual event. It was like uniting with the members of the extended family.

A very meaningful seminar on the clean energy was also conducted during the event. The role that engineers have to play towards the environmental issues was emphasized.

The batches that were felicitated participated in technical sessions and in the cultural programs. We will be coming with a separate special edition on the annual event.

Your cooperation & support to the alumni Association is the binding factor and keep the things running in right direction. Kindly keep giving us your valuable suggestion via email or messages to strengthen the common thread among all Harcourtians.

Warm Regards,

Mr. Sanjay Chandra (Elect r ical 1980) has written a book 'The Life & Tim es of a Com m on Man'. Following is a brief on the same.

I completed my Electrical Engineering from HBTI, Kanpur in 1980 and then joined the premier Indian Railway Services. I moved from the services to a government company on completion of 20 years of service. Ultimately, I quit government sector altogether to join the private sector, and then quit working for others to start my own consultancy. I also started writing as I realised that a substantial majority of the people went through similar experiences as I have underwent and I wanted my readers to understand that it is not a crime to dream ? for a life beyond the routine ? and then to work passionately to attain those dreams.

This gave birth to my book ?The Life and Times of a Common Man?. Excerpts from the preface of my book, reproduced below, give an overview of my book.

No child is born common. But its life can be common or extraordinary as it chooses.

I was born in a middle-class family, which might have been considered lower middle class. Those were the times in India when future of the children, and hence their destiny, was decided by the parents for want of adequate financial resources to indulge the child's fancies.

If the parent was working at lower levels in the state government services, the ambition of the parent for his children would be to become an officer in the state government. For the parent working in the officer cadre in the state government, the best-case scenario was for the children to join the Indian Administrative Services, failing which to land a central government job in the officer cadre. And an engineer 's son was expected to study to be an engineer, or doctor?s son to be a doctor.

Female children were being educated, but only with the intent for an early marriage to an eligible boy. The eligibility of the boy was decided by his educational qualifications and his having a government job. The boys were also brought up expecting that the girl would be fair, convent or English medium educated, so that she could comfortably move around in the social circle of the prospective husband.

My life also could have gone on these predictable lines, and I also would have remained a common man with the same aspirations or lack of aspirations, as those that my parents had for me. It was not to be so. I learnt from all my experiences - positive or negative. I rebelled against living a common man's life, and this made me go places, both literally and figuratively.

I had always been fascinated by David Copperfield, the immemorable character created by Charles Dickens. I also felt drawn towards the other two characters created by Dickens, namely Oliver Twist and Pip. Oliver?s story was the story of a child. Pip?s story in Great Expectations was that of a child till he is an adult. Copperfield?s story covered the life of a person from childhood to old age. But the common feature in all the three stories was their heroes? refusal to accept their circumstances, to go beyond their travails. As I read these three classics, I realised that I had a litt le of all these characters in me.

This set me on my journey to pen down the life of a common man over sixty years of his life. I realised that no one is born common, one is born a child. It is the person who makes the life common or uncommon. Life is made extraordinary by all the events that touch it, and all the people who flit through it.

I had always been fond of words and even wrote letters to my friends. However, the last of the letters that I wrote in my own hand were those written to my then wife to be, Neena. I think I wrote her one letter every day. Those were still the days when telephone calls were expensive, and one had to travel a long distance to get to a public telephone booth. Mobile handsets were nowhere on the horizon; the only way to express your love was to write, which is what I did most prolifically. I do not remember having written any more letters to Neena or for that matter to anyone else after our marriage. Now there are faster ways to communicate and should be used for communication. Communication should never break to the extent avoidable.

My objective in writing this book would be attained, if even a single person who reads it is inspired to make his or her life or the life of their children a litt le less common, even extraordinary.
