NOVEMBER 2018 CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5779

Scholar-in-Residence: Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin

An exciting program is coming our way, and I’m excited to tell you the details. On the Shabbat that falls on November 30 – December 1, our congregation will be hosting our annual Yedlin Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin. Rabbi Salkin, the senior rabbi of Temple Solel, in Hollywood, FL, is the author of the award-winning blog, “Martini Judaism: For Those Who Want to Be Shaken and Stirred.” Additionally, he has written several books, including Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah; The Gods Are Broken: The Hidden Legacy of Abraham; Text Messages: A Torah Commentary for Teens; and A Dream of Zion: Americans Talk About Why Israel Matters to Them. He is an outspoken commentator on many matters of Jewish concern and interest, and we are especially fortunate to be able to welcome him to Temple B’nai Tikvah later this month.

During Friday night services on November 30, Rabbi Salkin will speak on the topic “Judaism Beyond Slogans,” addressing the question of how we Jews can talk intelligently about contemporary political and social issues.

Then, during our Shabbat morning service the following day, his talk, “The Gods are Broken” will explore the story of Abraham, and the deep implications it has for us today. (During that service, we’ll also celebrate the 60th anniversary of Barry and Debby Smolkin.)

At noontime, that Saturday, he will meet with our B’nai Mitzvah families.

Then, that night, we’ll gather with Rabbi Salkin for Havdalah, and hear his talk, “Fixing the Broken Hallelujah,” about the ways in which the music of Leonard Cohen is rooted in Judaism and Jewish Tradition.

My friends, having Rabbi Salkin here is a wonderful opportunity for us, and I hope you’ll join us for one or more of his talks—I assure you that it will be worth your while.

SOCIAL ACTION UPDATE: JOIN THE SANDWICH

BRIGADE

Did you know that the Drop-In Centre hands out 600 sandwiches a day? In trying to help the homeless while bringing Temple members together, we are embarking upon an endeavour to provide some of the aforementioned sandwiches. They would be made at Temple, one evening a month. Bring yourself, bring your team, come for a couple of hours of sandwich schmoozing. We’re excited about the project and will move forward with more details once we know how many of you will be joining us.

If you’re interested, please contact Brenda Zugman at [email protected] or 403-288-5520.

LIFE CYCLE EVENTS SHABBAT SCHOOL UPDATE

EMMA FABER & ALLYSON BILLINGS

At the end of September our Shabbat School celebrated Sukkot together in our decorated sukkah. It was a chilly morning, but the students all huddled in and experienced sukkot with the shaking of the lulav and etrog. Morah Emma led us in the kiddush and prayer over the challah.

On October 21, our Rugelach (grades 3-5) met for the first time this year. They went bowling and had a great time! Rugelach will be meeting this month as well. If you are interested in joining, please email [email protected]

For the month of November, Shabbat School will be running on November 3, 17 and 24. There will be no school on November 10. On Friday November 16, our Grade 1 and 2 families will be having a Shabbat dinner together. Our grade 3 and 4 families will be having their Shabbat dinner on November 23.

CYNTHIA SIMMONS

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESukkot/Shemini Atzeret Yizkor

We are supposed to write our Kol Tikvah columns early so they can be checked for spelling and organized with the other news in a manner that is visually appealing. So I sit down to write having just completed the Days of Awe and planning for (how can it possibly come at the beginning of October!) Canadian Thanksgiving.

Now I need to tell you that every time I make Thanksgiving dinner my Grandmother is in the kitchen with me. My Grandmother died in October of 1999, but still she is there. Even if I am cooking duck with wild rice and apple stuffing and a lovely desert of brown sugar crepes, she is busy making corn bread stuffing, giblet gravy, and sending me off to section oranges for ambrosia salad. It makes my heart hurt more than a little and it makes me smile at the same time.

My Grandmother’s presence at Thanksgiving brings back more than the recipes, it brings back the memories of her strength – she had a major stroke at 40 that left her

paralyzed on her right side yet she learned to speak, walk, and prepare a Thanksgiving dinner again. I carry with me memories of her kindness and her laughter, and (importantly) her generosity. She left me a legacy of love, kindness, and strength. A legacy I work to build on.

The Sukkot/Shemini Atzeret Yizkor service reminded me again of how in our practice of Judaism we are so often bringing together celebration and remembering. We bring our harvest to the sukkah and—if we are lucky and the snow stays away—we eat our celebratory dinner with family under the stars. Still, as sukkot ends we don’t just rush to put the food up and walk away, we have Yizkor, we remember those of our families that have gone before us. Family members, who through positive examples, and perhaps a few negative ones, helped to create the people that we are.

Foryour life has lived in meyour laugh once lifted me,your word was gift to me. * * pg. 330 of the Mishkan T’filah for weekdays and festivals

Food, wine, candles and remembering - a common theme in our lives, and I love it. We are reminded to live our lives fully – to eat well and to dance. We also remember from where and from whom we came. We look back from generation to generation to trace their lives and to help us to understand our own. I think though that this may be the easy part – harder is realizing and accepting that we are the ancestors of those that come after us – of our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. And if you have no children, we still help to create the culture/society that we live in – a society that will influence generations to come.

Over the years we have built this synagogue and the community that worships within it. We have eaten, drunk wine, and danced with friends and with Torahs. We, who have been shaped by those who came before us, have built a legacy for future generations. Over the next few months we will have the opportunity to both celebrate what we have built and to strengthen that legacy of worship and learning. A party for our 40th Anniversary is being planned – a time of celebration and remembering. In addition we are moving forward with the creation of our own Torah – one where our hands can help to shape the letters. A spiritual gift both to us who help create it, and to those who follow after us.

Come to the party to celebrate and to remember. Participate in writing the Torah and help to strengthen our legacy. Details to follow.

ADULT EDUCATION UPDATEJENNIFER EISERMAN AND REBECCA KREL, COMMITTEE CHAIRS

Torah ‘N Java continues on Saturdays from 9:45 am to 10:30 am in the Chapel. Come join us for a lively discussion about the weekly Parasha, accompanied by coffee/tea and a snack. Please note the new accessible location (no stairs).

Our first Lunch and Learn was held on Wednesday, October 3, led by Michele Doctoroff, who shared her trip to India and some Indian treats. It was well attended, despite the bad weather and snowy roads. Thank you Michele for a wonderful experience!

Our next Lunch and Learn speaker will be Paul Bauman on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at noon in the Temple library. His talk is titled, “Out of Sight, but Not Out of Find: Science in Search of a Holocaust Escape Tunnel in Lithuania.” Every year sees fewer Holocaust survivors and witnesses to provide firsthand accounts of the events of what is now more than 73 years ago. This talk will explore the use of science, and geophysics in particular, to provide evidence of the beginning of the systematic, mass execution of Jews in the Ponary Forest near Vilna, in 1941, and the truly heroic tunnel escape of 12 Jews from this same extermination site in April, 1943.

We are always looking for volunteers who would like to lead Torah and Java study: the volunteer just reads the Torah portion in advance, and thinks of an item to start and/or steer the discussion. We are also looking for those who might like to give a talk for Lunch and Learn.

Introduction to Judaism course started on September 25 (Tuesdays, 6:30 to 7:30 pm).

Rabbi Glickman is leading us through a study, Joseph Soloveitchik’s The Lonely Man of Faith. The Rabbi described this to us as “a challenging, deep plunge” into this important contemporary Jewish text. This class runs on Tuesdays, 8:00 to 9:00 pm, and started on September 25.

We would also like to offer more Tasting Judaism events this year, and are looking for volunteers who might like to organize one of these. If you love to cook Jewishly, please think about sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge with others!

SOCIAL ACTION: WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF ALLRICHARD BRONSTEIN

The Calgary Alliance for the Common Good is a community group consisting of 24 member organizations representing religious bodies, labour unions, NGOs and others.

We are part of the Industrial Areas Foundation that has 65 affiliates in Canada, the US, UK, Germany and Australia. IAF was established nearly 80 years ago in Chicago by legendary social worker Saul Alinsky, Roman Catholic Bishop Bernard James Shell and the founder of the Chicago Sun-Times, Marshall Field III.

CACG was established in Calgary just over two years ago. Its goal is to strengthen citizen leadership, develop trust and mu-tual respect throughout the community, and to take action on issues identified by local community leaders.

This is accomplished through a network of training and educational programs, developing positive relationships across the entire community, and tackling specific projects.

Currently, CACG has two active projects: improved home supports for seniors, and support for reconciliation with our in-digenous neighbours.

Temple B’nai Tikvah has two volunteers that serve on CACG: Richard Bronstein at 403-259-2555 and Matt Haynes at 403-870-2295. Please feel free to contact Richard or Matt if you’re interested in becoming involved with CACG.

CACG is always interested in having more volunteers and hearing from others about community initiatives that are worthy of support.

I was sitting at the welcome table at the very successful and well attended Welcome Back BBQ when Zvika came over and asked me if I wanted a cup of soup. I politely said no but he kindly insisted and brought me a cup of a very delicious soup. I asked who made it and turns out it was the Finkleman’s. I hastily tracked them down and asked for the recipe. Later in the evening, I made my way to the sweet table and had the most delicious cookies, I won’t say how many or how many different ones I tried, but suffice to say, I had a lot. I was able to track down, baker Cynthia Simmons and get the recipe for her amazing cookies.

I returned home and thought about the many talented cooks and bakers we have among our membership and a recipe column was born. I have a few recipes to start with, but would love it if members would be kind enough to share their favourites and award winners with me, so I could share with our Kol Tikvah readers. Please feel free to send me your recipes at [email protected] and we will publish one or two per issue.
