Our thoughts are with all staff and students as they begin to return to their school this week to recommence learning. Principal Paul Holding has done an outstanding job, leading through this. I am also reminded of how good the resources of the Department of Education are – human and physical, in the way key actions have been taken to ensure the school is up and ready for all this week. In Bellingen Public School we have a variety of ways that we support and build respect through various programs that we offer including our values program, led by Elizabeth Mulligan. We also have two trained anti-racism officers Fiona Vardobasso and Katharine Sutherland, and their job is to specifically focus on any aspect where racist or sledging language may have been used. All Public Schools are required to take racism very seriously, and Bellingen Public School is no exception. Term 1 Week 6 Monday, 27 February 2017

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK A conversation with a community member last week: “…Belonging…longing to be…” Bellingen High School The events of what occurred, last week, at Bellingen High School with the fire and vandalism reminds us all of how important it is that as a community we reach out to look after one another – with respect and compassion. Respect for all

This week’s value is respect. As a school we believe deeply in this and the way we treat one another, and want to be treated. Leadership assembly last week What an absolute joy it was to recognise the student leaders for 2017, on Friday at the special assembly. Thank you to all families who came along to share in the special moments of this recognition ceremony.

(And so good to see so many of our families at our welcome to 2017 BBQ and meet your child’s teacher evening on Wednesday, last!) Thankyou, and yours in partnership Graeme Ross, Principal UNIFORM SHOP The P & C currently has on display a prospective new uniform, which will be on display in the office for four weeks. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

Congratulations to our new SRC Our Student Representative Council (SRC) met for their first meeting of the year last Friday. SRC’s provide the opportunity for ‘student voice’ in schools and the students raised some interesting issues already. SRC members will hold class meetings before our next meeting and bring an idea, issue or concern that they would like to see acted upon to our next gathering. We will also look at what fundraising they would like to see happen this term. Our SRC will be led by our eight student leaders who will take it in turns to be presidents, secretaries, treasurers and publicity officers. Congratulations to the following students who were elected by their peers to be their class representatives. 2A: Grace Douglas and Beau Glyde 2P: Zweli Vockler and Hannah McNeil 2/3J: Ella Warwick-Hogarth and Sam Bowen 3/4P: Toby Johnson and Indi Murray-Lyon 3/4O: Indica Johnson and Geordie Galloway 3/4M: Laikin Currie and Grace Sutherland 3/4A: Charlee Troy and Jack Apanui 5/6O: Malachi Bailey and Leilani Coombes 5/6A: Brooke Davis and Josh Perry 5/6P: Riley Bell and Evie Thacker 5/6M: Luka Shirley and Ziggy Taylor Ms Roz Everson SRC Coordinator FAMILY FUN NIGHT Bellingen Public School P and C are hosting a family trivia and games night in the school hall on Friday 10th March from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. UNIFORM SHOP The uniform shop is open every Monday and Friday morning, 8.40am-9.30am. Parents/Carers are welcome to complete an order form which will be filled and sent home with your child/ren or you will be phoned for collection. The Uniform shop is CASH or CHEQUES ONLY. Haylee Rose, P & C Uniform Co ordinator SCHOOL BANKING Remember, School Banking day is every Tuesday. If you have 10 or more tokens you can exchange them for great new prizes. Ashlie Davis & Sandra Ruming School Banking Co ordinators MUSIC NOTICE Exciting New Innovation from our Wood Wind Teachers.

Georgia and Peter would like to offer shared lessons on Flute and Clarinet (Georgia on Flute and Peter on Clarinet) This means friends can try out instruments together for a very reasonable price. Working in pairs is also motivating as children bounce off each other and strive to practice in order to keep up with their partner. Within one term the children can join the band which is where enthusiastic learning takes place; reading, counting, listening, watching. It is this playing together, and contributing to the harmonies of the music that excite brain function and soul spasms! This is a unique opportunity that our fantastic public school has to offer your child! Capture the opportunity and fill in expression of interest form at the office. Children on the violin and drum waiting lists may be interested in this offer in the interim. Cost would be $15 per lesson and $20 per term to hire the instrument. Kind Regards Liz Scott, Music Co ordinator CHICKEN POX Chicken pox has been detected at Bellingen Publc School. What are the symptoms? • Chickenpox begins with a sudden onset of slight fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash. • The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs. • The rash appears over three to four days. • Symptoms usually occur two weeks after exposure to the virus. How is it spread? • The infection is highly contagious to people who have never had chickenpox or who have not been immunised.

• People are infectious from one or two days before the rash appears (that is, during the runny nose phase) and up to five days after (when the blisters have formed crusts or scabs) Who is at risk? • Anyone who has not had chickenpox or been vaccinated in the past can get chickenpox. CANTEEN NEWS This Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday (also known as Fat Tuesday in many rural places like Tamworth), although many of our elfin education absorbers may not understand the auspiciousness of this day when referred to in this way, they may know it better as Pancake Day. To celebrate this occasion, the canteen will be selling pancakes in the morning while stocks last and at lunch also while stocks last. These celebratory delicacies will vend for 10 cents each. Of course, there will be a limit to the amount sold to each child in keeping with the healthy school’s initiative. As well equipped as the canteen is, it does have limited facilities. Therefore, providing or pre-preparing large quantities of certain items can be difficult. Mini ice cups have proved to be in this sphere. As there can only be so many mini ice cups prepared for each day and demand is so high we will have to reduce the limit of these purchased at one time. At the risk of using tautology for emphasising effect, the new limit is now a maximum of 3 mini ice cups at a time. This limit, of course, does not apply to frozen orange piece. We will be selling as many frozen orange pieces for 10 cents each as our healthy young darlings wish for. As a result of circumstances beyond my control I may need to leave the canteen in the capable hands of a relief canteen supervisor for a couple of days this week. As I don’t know yet which days it would be difficult to arrange a weekly special this week. This means that there is no weekly special this week but Sushi Friday will still go ahead as usual. Feeding your children to a better education, Eddy Vardabasso, Canteen Supervisor

RFF Teacher - Thinking Skills, Denise Head MANAGING IMPULSIVITY

Managing our impulses involves finding strategies to remain calm in challenging situations, and listening to advice from our brain about the best options to follow. In classes this week we have been exploring what this means for us as learners and how learning this habit can impact all areas of our lives.

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series

of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh
