Dear Parent, Carers and Teachers SIGNING INTO THE SCHOOL WHEN VISITING- Please be reminded that all parents and carers must sign the visitors book in the front office so that we have a record of who is in the school and the time of departure. Please make sure that if you have a friend or a relative coming to attend to an issue they are aware that they too must sing in. All tradespersons, student teachers, agency representatives, visitors from other schools and guest speakers are required to sign in and sign out. We do this for the protection of our children. SCHOOL UNIFORM Thank you to all those wonderful parents out there who send the children to school in their proper school uniform. However, some of you are allowing the children to appear in tracksuit pants and jumpers which are not grey or maroon. I have requested previously that grey or maroon leggings are acceptable, provided that a skirt or shorts are worn over the top. Tights on their own are not a good look! JUST A LITTLE HEADS UP FOR

Be watchful of the amount of money your children bring to school and what they spend it on. Sometimes children buy food stuffs from the canteen for the purpose of making sure they have a friendship network around them. Something to be mindful of.

WAAPA Winter School 2017

Students who learn Italian with Signorina Russo will be celebrating Italian Week from Monday, 29th May to Friday 2nd June. There will be a dress up parade on Tuesday 30th May but the Italian day activities will take place on Wednesday-parents welcome! Italian food on sale at the canteen from Tuesday to Friday & other activities happening through out the week. On our dress up day (Tuesday, 30th May), students can wear an Italian inspired costume or simply dress in green, white and red. Students may wish to dress up as an ancient Roman or even a Roman god or goddess. If, however, students do NOT have an Italian – inspired costume to wear, they must come to school in their school uniform as it is not a ‘free-dress day’. Here are some Italian costume ideas for May 3oth; * Come as a big pizza or as a bowl of spaghetti

* Dress up as an Italian chef/ pizza maker or waiter

* Dress like Pinocchio or character from an Italian story

* Come as a Ferrari or a racing car driver like Super Mario

* Make a cut-out of the Leaning Tower of pizza or the Colosseum

Wear a ‘Carnevale’ costume with a colourful mask

Ancient Roman Costumes

In ancient Roman times men and boys wore TOGAS, loose fitting garments that were usually white. Slaves did not wear togas; they wore tunics (these looked like a big, long t-shirt with a belt).

Roman women often wore a STOLA (a Roman dress) or a TUNICA (a tunic) with a cloak or long shawl called a PALLA. The PALLA was draped around the neck or body and sometimes it was pulled over the head like a veil.

Roman fabrics did not have prints on them and girls wore white until they were married. Then they often wore brightly coloured dyed fabric. Purple fabric was very expensive! For footwear the Romans wore leather sandals that often crisscrossed up the leg.

Roman soldiers and gladiators wore a tunic with armour over their chests, along with a knee-length skirt made from strips of leather. They had shields, spears and swords and of course, a helmet.

Roman accessories for women and men included jewellery, brooches, upper arm bangles and laurel wreaths (a wreath of leaves worn on the head of men).

Each Thursday our Year 1-6 mathematicians in A5 have been exploring the STEM process (Science Technology Engineering and Maths). This process allows the children to engage in real life problems and find solutions through their experiences. The STEM challenges so far:

Build the longest paper chain with 1 sheet of A4 paper.

Design and build a marshmallow blaster

Marble maze challenge

Bubble wand challenge.

The STEM process encourages the students to build their ability to think creatively and critically in order to solve problems with confidence.

Star Wars Day- May the 4th be with you

Thank you Sarah, Lynda and Kylie for joining in the fun of Star Wars Day and making it an awesome day that ran smoothly. It was great to see all the people who dressed up. Thankyou Mr Thomas for bringing in and displaying your light sabres. I put a lot of effort into organising promotions, making healthy foods fun and challenging students to try foods they wouldn’t normally eat. Children are more likely to eat if other children are eating it too. The Millennium Falcon was a yummy ham and pineapple pizza, but also had tomato and capsicum on as part of the decoration. Xavior from B2 who, according to mum Skye, can be fussy said “It was yummy and

I ate it all.” So next time there is a promotion try it out too.

Italian Week

The Canteen, together with Signorina Russo, is planning a line up of food for Italian Week in Week 6 so look out for the order forms and save some spare change.

Adult Education Program-

Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) provide learning in: Communication Numeracy Literacy Personal; development Study skills. The Circle of Security is an intervention program for parents/carers and children that focuses on the relationships which give children emotional support.

The Circle of Security program helps parents and carers to look beneath children’s behaviour to discover their genuine relationship needs. There is a 7 week program starting on the 17th May 2017. Community Arts Network Presents Lullabies Celebrating Noongar language through the power of song.

Learn song writing skills with award winning singer-songwriter Gina Williams. She’ll help you to create an original lullaby in Noongar language. Also learn how to craft your own Noongar story doll with acclaimed textile artist Sharyn Egan. Mondays from 15 May 31 July 2017 Child and Parent Centre Swan on the grounds of Middle Swan PS, Stratton from 10am including lunch.
