Dear All,
Education has to be all inclusive. It cannot
be confined to classrooms. Learning is con-
tinuous process and schools have major role
in this process. To be able to meet the chal-
lenges and learn from all situations should
be the hallmark of all persons.
Keeping this essence ,we have designed our
school‟s education structure. Apart from
regular classes we organize activities which
are designed to develop other skills.
Winter is just about ushering in. Festive
mood just about over. But Children‟s Day
was there.
I am sure everybody enjoyed the grand show
painstakingly put up by teachers and the
tasty pizza the day before.
Even in this joyous mood we must not for-
get the less fortunate children, who have not
heard of pizza, let alone taste it. It is with
this in mind that Todiji announced that we
would donate 200 boxes of pizza next year
to these needy children .It will be done
through some NGO.
A fantastic Sports Day has just been con-
cluded. Smart march by the students was
impressive.
The daily workout to reach the level of per-
fection has to be applauded.
We are all here for learning .To be able to
do that ,we have to be physically and men-
tally fit and have that craving for learning.
Our school strives to achieve all this.
Looking forward to the next big event-The
Annual Day!

FRENCH ELOCUTION COMPETITION
On 20th November 2014, the South City International school witnessed the first
French elocution competition ever held since the birth of the school in its auditorium.
The competition was from Class 1 to class 5, the primary section and class 6 to class
10, the secondary section. The event witnessed the portrayal of exceptional poetry
recitation skills. The performances were highly appreciated by the audience as well
as the Chief Guest Gwenëlle Raisoir, the course director of Alliance Française du
Bengale. The competition was judged by two French teachers of Alliance française,
Mrs. Sangeeta Ghosh and Mr. Asit Baran Roy.
From the Primary a variety of interesting rhymes with beautiful anchoring had
flown in a melody from the young ones. They recited French Nursery Rhymes.
And the secondary students came with the theme of gradual change that takes place
in the mental plane of a child as it grows up. They opened a gallery of Jaques Pre-
vert‟s poems. It was a treat to hear the poems which came as an expression of an irri-
tated child when it is bitten by an ant or a bumble bee and the poems which took us
to a little child‟s fantasy world . Some poems depicted the pains of the animals in
zoo and took us to the thoughts of a dunce, and some poems expressed the desire of a
child to grow up into a young man when he no longer has to drink milk. Poems of
Jacques Pervert came also with a young man‟s cravings for his lost love and with the
moon‟s soliloquy by Guy de Maupassant.
One could see and feel the enthusiasm that the children had in their presenta-
tion and their beautiful way they expressed something through words and expression
in a melody with all smiles, giggles and sad tunes and with all their confidence to
stand in front of everybody reciting poems which were totally in foreign language.
Bhushanraj Singh of Class III snatched the Best Speaker award from the
Primary Section. In the Secondary section Shantanu Volz of Class VI won the first
prize in the Group F along with the Best Speaker award. Priyasha Sanyal came sec-
ond. In the group G , Sasha Ararwal and Natasha Mahapatra of Class VII jointly won
the 1st prize with Larissa Moraes coming second. Rajit Banerjee of class IX with his
emotional presentation, won the 1st prize in Group H.

“ There are no ideal careers only ideal choices”(Career counseling )
This was evident at the career counseling sessions held at South City International
School on the 12th , 14th and 15th of Nov.‟14 by The Institute for Career Studies
Lucknow.
The counseling programme started with different interactive sessions for parents, stu-
dents and teachers by Dr. Amrita Dass – Founder Director (ICS) on the 12th of Nov.
All her sessions were informative and enriching, she cleared many misconceptions
and generalizations associated with career choices.
The interactive sessions were followed by individual counseling sessions for students
of class VIII on the 14th ,and 15th of Nov.‟14. Ms. Rashmi Singh and Ms. Anuja
Kumar, the two counselors from ICS, conducted these sessions. Each student was
counseled by them based on their performance in the aptitude test conducted by Insti-

Workshop on Sexual Abuse / good and bad touches/ Awareness
An enriching awareness program on good
and bad touch was conducted in school on
19th November, 2014. This workshop was
presented by Ms. Sejal Arora and Ms.
Monita Basu Saha. Two sessions were con-
ducted ,each having a duration of an hour
and half. They were happy to learn that there
was no harm in giving children correct an-
swers to questions that aroused interest in
their minds! They also became aware of the
No – Go – Tell Principle so that they could
further go home and enrich their child on the
same!
This workshop enriched them about
the various stages of development in a child.
It was a workshop developed as a way of
communicating about sexual abuse to chil-
dren from the age of 3 years in a creative
way. Power point presentations, activities,
videos and interactive sessions were used to
convey this topic on a lighter note.
At the end of the workshop, parents were
aware that it‟s not wrong if their children are
seen playing with their genitals and they
could be told about the safety of their body
in a play way method!

WORLD PHOTONICS DAY CELEBRATION AT SCIS ON 15TH NOVEMBER 2014
“Science is Fun”, “Science is Magic” – these phrases came to life when SPIE (International Society for Optics and Photonics), Student Chapter, Kolkata, celebrated World Photonics Day (which was on 21st October) with students of South City International School on 15th November 2014. The belated celebration was also a part of the Children’s Day celebration. The World Photonics Day program was conducted in two venues. Dr. Kallol Bhattacharya, Faculty Advisor SPIE and Head of Optics, Applied Physics, Calcutta University gave an entertaining talk on Light and Optics to the stu-dents of classes 5 to 8 in the Auditorium from 8:30 in the morning while his team of SPIE volunteers (B.Tech and M.tech students of Calcutta University) conducted interesting demo-experiments for students of classes 9 and 10 in the Activity Room. Both the sessions dealt with basics of behavior of Light, photons and interesting modern day applications. Dr. Kal-lol Bhattacharya engaged the students in the audience to make them understand simple concepts regarding Light, reflection of light, perception, total internal reflection and applications like fibre optics, UV lights, 3D vision, 3D movie and projection. It was a good entertaining fun session through which students learnt a great deal about Light/Optics. The session in the Activity room for Classes 9 and 10 was highly educative as students saw simple demonstrations of their text book concepts. The models, demo kits were very simple and inspiring. In one demo, through simple water bottle and laser light one could see total internal reflection effect, while other one showed mixing of seven colors of light spectra. Another model showed convergence, divergence of light rays after passing through lenses and prisms. They also demonstrated Interference of light rays which projection of interesting interference patterns on screen. Astrophysics Instrumentation volunteers had set up telescope in the field to show projection of Sun-spots. It was a fun way of experiential learning for everyone. This program ended at 11 a.m well before beginning of other segment of Children’s Day celebration in the Auditorium. We hope SPIE will once again invite South City In-ternational School to host World Photonics Day next year - 2015, which happens to be INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF LIGHT!! All such beyond textbook activities are always encouraged and supported by our Principal, Management of South
City International School and parents. We thank everyone for the support. We hope these activities will add an ex-
tra experiential dimension to our students’ learning curve.

THE APPRENTICE SCIENTIST-2014 SCIENCE COMPETITION HELD AT FUTURE FOUNDATION SCHOOL
South City International School has been participating in the Apprentice Scientist Science Competition which is organized and conducted jointly by Future Foundation, School, Kolkata and Lycee, François, Pondicherry. The third edition of the competition was held on 21st November this year. The competition is specifically for science students of grade 8. Eight teams (each team of five students) participated in the event this year. The day long competition is unique and interesting as it follows French philosophy of “Doing Science”. Five stu-dents of class 8 South City International School participated this year and won the joint second place. The competition involves and engages students in 3-4 experiments for which kit and instructions are pro-vided by Lycee, Francois Science team. Students have to perform the experiments, analyze and present the results and then complete worksheets/reports. It is a four hour long event which almost every team enjoyed participating. The experiments were simple about science concepts in everyday life around us – Air resis-tance, Lung function, Copper and Laws of Motion. South City International Team consisted of five bright students – Wrik Karmakar, Mayank Goel, Joydeep Dutta, Avik Chakravarty and Raunak Dasgupta. The team performed sincerely with complete co-operation, they gave proper explanations, completed reports/worksheets and got well deserved second place along with Narmada School. The first place went to Heritage School and third to Modern High School. These winning teams of East Zone will now compete in Nationals Final which will be held at Lycee school in Pondicherry in February/March. The school was awarded autographed copy of the book, “Apprentice Scientist” by French Physicist Nicole Ostervesky who was one of the judges of the competition and also gave away the prizes to winning teams. KALEIDOSCOPE Workshops at The American Centre
VOLUME-7, ISSUE-7
On the 18th of November the American Centre, Kolkata hosted a Hip Hop Dance Workshop at
the Consulate . The workshop was attended by Aashka Doshi from class VIII C. The workshop
was an interactive session wherein the students were taught wall graffiti . They were also taught
Dub step, Foot walk , Beboing , D J Scratch and Locking and Popping. The students were given
an opportunity to demonstrate their skills .
Mr. JJ, Mr. Valentine and Mr. Prince conducted the workshop.
On the 19th of November the Director of the American Centre invited students from South City In-
ternational School to attend a workshop on music at the Consulate. Eighteen students from classes
VI to VIII went to attend the workshop.
The prime focus of the workshop was centered around Music as a scientific discipline and how it
helps to develop an all round personality whether fostering academic or sportsmanship qualities.
The workshop was more performance based. Ms Heemstra who conducted the workshop began by
introducing the children to various genres of music such as the Argentinean Tango and thereafter a
series of pieces from the Impressionist Romantic period. The pieces included compositions by
Claude Debussy ,a French composer who incorporated the pentatonic scale to percussionist ideas
and emotions stirred from nature into his music. The pieces were „The Pagodas „which plied with
the sound of the Gong and then „Le Mer‟ which created an auditory image of water or more pre-
cisely the sea. There were other works which were played and demonstrated such works of
George Gershwin and Amy Beach.
The students had a go at the piano and also familiarized themselves with the pedals and the mod-
ern technique of composition which Ms Heemstra called Preparing the Piano. At the end of the
workshop the students participated in a quiz where they won token prizes. The workshop was thor-
oughly enjoyed by all.

KALEIDOSCOPE Workshops at The American Centre
On19th November 2014, I attended a creative writing workshop, presided over by Mr. Rick Jahna. The workshop was con-
ducted in The American Centre. It was an enriching session and many students from renowned schools of Kolkata actively
participated in it.
The workshop began as Mr. Rick Jahna, formally introduced himself as a „testimonia‟ (Spanish), meaning a person who
specializes the art of studying testimonies. He spoke about his background and experiences, after which, a prompt was dis-
played on the screen.
The prompt said-I am sitting here today, listening to this man from the United States, but a part of me is thinking about….
The students had to pen down their own thoughts in order to complete the sentence. A few students volunteered to read out
their pieces, after which Mr. Rick moved on to his next topic-the importance of conflicts in a testimony.
“A conflict can be between man and man, man and society, or man and himself,” Mr. Rick said. We wrote about some of
our own conflicts when as we were instructed to do so. We also wrote about some roles that we played as a being on this
earth, including not just materialistic responsibilities but also also vivid aspects of our character.
Mr. Rick proceeded with his presentation and enlightened us about the differences between telling the reader your story and
showing him your story. He thus revealed a very vital and potent secret behind good creative essays.
Lastly, we were asked to write a piece that would not only narrate the circumstances to the reader but also rather enable him
to visualize the story. After the exercise was over, the session ended and the students were dismissed.
I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with Mr. Rick after the workshop. It‟d felt a lot more encouraging and helpful
exchanging my views and ideas with him. I‟d thoroughly enjoyed the whole workshop and also the healthy discussions that
had cropped up during its course. I would like to thank my school for giving me this unique opportu-
nity, and I look forward to attending more workshops like this .

An array of fun activities!
Tiny Tots-Painting their dreams on Children‟s
Day!
Fruit is nature’s candy and what better way can one
think of making little ones eat fruits, than in the form of
Fruit Salad. Not only did the Tiny Tots have fun tossing
chopped fruit in a bowl, but also transformed their fruit
salad into something enticing to the eye and pleasing to
the palate. From picking fruit with the same level of
ripeness to sprit zing fruit with lemon juice!!! They thor-
oughly enjoyed themselves, identifying various fruits
and figuring out the number of seeds in them!!
To make teaching and learning more effective, new
methods of teaching have to be adopted. The same
was done for a Geography lesson in Class XI- Com-
position and Structure of the Atmosphere. The stu-
dents were asked to do a concept map in pairs on the
sub topic “Layers of the Atmosphere”. The students
translated their ideas on paper and came up with
very innovative concepts. Working in pairs gave
them a chance to share their ideas and present it to
the best of their ability.
