Dear Parents and Guardians,
I extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students and their families to the
academic session of 2017-2018 at Indus International School Bangalore. It always amazes
me how children grow and change in so many ways when they return to school after the
summer vacation. We look forward to another wonderful school year.
From the Principal’s Desk
AUGUST 2017
The month began with the Grade 10 and 12 students returning a week earlier than the
rest of the student body. This early start gives enough time to take stock of their
assignments and holiday homework and facilitates syllabus completion as these students
will be appearing for their Grade 10 IGCSE and Grade 12 IBDP Board Examinations in a
few months.
The rest of the students began school on August 07th. The first fortnight of school was
spent in helping them settle into the demands of their new environment. We realise that
students spend majority of their day at school and it is absolutely essential to make it a
comfortable environment for them to be able to pursue various opportunities the school
has to offer, be it in academics or in whole education spheres.
The month of August greeted us with wonderful news of being ranked Number 1, yet
again, in the Education World India School Rankings as the best International Day-cum-
Boarding School. The nation-wide survey was conducted by C Fore. Standing first for the
sixth time in a row is a result of our perseverance to excel as well as the support and
feedback we receive from parents.
More good news came our way when the IGCSE Grade 10 [Set 2] examination results
for the May 2017 series were published this month. It was indeed a proud moment to
note that 42% of our students, have secured a Distinction. Consistent hard work, focus
and pursuit of academic excellence have helped ensure these fantastic results. I extend
my compliments to all the students, parents and the IGCSE team on this achievement. It
must be mentioned that Rishi Banerjee, Sathvik Kashyap and Shreya Srinivas have scored
9 A*s in their IGCSE examinations.
On August 15th, students of Grades 6 to 9 and 11 attended the celebration of Indian
Independence and South Korean National Liberation Day. We began the day with the
flag hoisting and singing of the National Anthems of both countries.
We also celebrated the annual day of the Indus International Community School [IICS].
During his address, the CEO, Lt. General Arjun Ray announced that the academic session
2017-2018 will be the year of book reading for all students. He also emphasised the need
to be creative in the 21st century. IICS students showcased their music, public speaking,
dance and drama talents impressively on stage. The highlight of the day was a
contemporary dance rendition of Malala Yousafzai’s speech.

The Student Council Investiture ceremony was conducted on August 18th. The solemn
occasion saw the new council take oath to uphold the core values of Indus and perform
their responsibilities to the best of their abilities. During the occasion, which was also
attended by proud parents and family members, I briefed the new council members on
how we will provide them guidance, training and support to carry out their tasks as
student leaders. The CEO, Lt Gen Arjun Ray, during his address spoke about how
tomorrow’s world depends on innovators and creative thinkers. He also emphasized on
how parents play a big role in empowering the child.

A nine member delegation of Indus Primary Years Programme, that also included the
Heads of the Early Learning Centres, spent a week in Finland this month. The purpose
of this visit was to gain insights into early childhood education and best practices of the
Finnish education system. An intensive course with the University of Jyvaskyla and visits
to the local schools allowed the team to experience a different pedagogical approach to
teaching and learning. The core curriculum of the Finnish model revolves around child
centric learning and their socio-emotional development.
The visiting faculty also gained a deep understanding of the ideology behind
phenomenon based learning and its transdisciplinary nature, encompassing many skills.
The faculty had an enriching visit which has strengthened their pedagogical
understanding and they now look forward to implementing the best practices that they
have learned.
The Grade 5 students attended a sensitisation workshop for students to guide them in
being responsible digital citizens. Through interactive discussions and theme related
videos, students were given an understanding of what it means to be a digital citizen and
how to use technology responsibly. The discussions not only helped students to
understand online behaviour and academic honesty, but also helped them realise that
digital rights come with an equal number of responsibilities.

Gender Sensitization sessions were conducted across the PYP, MYP and IGCSE this
month and will be conducted in the IBDP in September. The awareness programme on
‘Safe Touch and Unsafe Touch’ was conducted by the PYP Counsellor from 16th to 19th
of August, for all students from Reception to Grade 5. The programme was conducted
with an aim of bringing awareness among the students about the different types of touch.
The main aim was to educate and empower students to deal with anything that make
them feel uncomfortable. Similarly, in the MYP and IGCSE, the counsellors focused on
gender roles and breaking gender stereotypes.
Mountaineering Expedition: In synchronisation to the leadership journey of Indus, our
students embarked on the Peak to Lead –III mountaineering expedition to Mt. Elbrus (5,
642m). It is the highest peak of the European continent and one of the Seven Summits.
On success of this expedition, Indus will have the pride of climbing two of the Seven
Summits. Seven students have set out on this 11 day trip on 23rd August. We eagerly wait
for their return to hear stories of their experiences.
As part of my mentoring programme for the DP students, I met with Grade 12 students
in small groups to take stock of their Internal Assessments, Extended Essay and Theory
of Knowledge submissions. These meetings helped identify the areas in which specific
intervention was required to ensure the student receives timely support and guidance to
meet their academic deadlines. Post the first Mid-term tests, I will begin my mentoring
sessions with Grade 11 students.
The annual leadership camps to Yellagiri began with Group 1 of Grade 12 (August 07th
to 10th) and Group 1 of Grade 11 students (August 21st to 24th).
The leadership camps aim at taking students outside their comfort zone and focus on
developing core competencies and skills such as communication, decision making,
leading through a vision, conflict management and collaboration, but at the same time
are conducted in a controlled environment which do not compromise on the well-being
of any student. The activities include paintball, river crossing, hill climbing, shelter
making, discovery course, LDC, pistol shooting and survival cooking during a trek.
Boarding has seen a lot of activity in this first month. The team ensured initial problems
like homesickness, if any, were effectively addressed and students settled into their new
‘home away from home’.
The focus here has been to help students understand and follow a routine through the
week, ensure they are well engaged over the weekends and at the same time provide for
some down time as well. Some of the activities in the boarding over the last few weeks
include sessions on mindfulness, reading, yoga, a dream catchers workshop, a cricket

match between students and staff, movie and popcorn night in the amphitheatre, dance
competition (boarding wise), special dinner and also a visit to the mall (lunch and movie).
The house parents have also worked with the students to draw up study schedules and
will be taking them through sessions on self and time management along with study
skills in the next few days.
Most of our returning parents must be aware that Indus International School Bangalore
was placed first in Stage 1 of the Behtar India Campaign which began in March 2017. The
campaign focuses on Swasthya (Health), Swachhta (Cleanliness) and Vataavaran
(Environment) in three different stages.
Stage 1 involved students in fund raising with an objective to purchase dengue
prevention kits for under privilege children. In the individual rankings, five of our
students were placed in the top ten. To recognise their efforts, NDTV invited these
achievers to the NDTV India Students’ Conclave on August 04th, 2017 in New Delhi which
included panel discussions and key note addresses by prominent personalities from
different walks of life.
The students have now begun working on Stage 2 determined to do their best and ensure
their team remains on top of the leader board.
Fourteen students participated in the prestigious Harvard Model United Nations, India
chapter at Hyderabad between August 12th and 15th. The H-MUN had 1200 participants
from all over the world. We are very happy to report that two of our students won
prestigious awards. Drisya Antose, a student of Grade 12 won Outstanding Delegate in
the United Nations Envrionment Programme Committee [Ireland- ECOSOC]. Also,
Satyajit Amin (Grade 11) won Outstanding Delegate in the World Social Forum
Committee [Muslim Aid- ECOSOC]
Our students also participated in VIVUM 2017 held at TISB on August 21st and 22nd.
In the cultural events, our students were placed first in three events; Debate, Scavenger
Hunt and Merchandise. Also, Indus participants were placed third in the App Jam
competition.
In Sports, the Indus table tennis team [Girls] won gold and the badminton team [Boys]
won silver.
Our Primary and Middle Years students also participated in the Game Changer Swim
Meet on August 19th. Our young swimmers picked up a total of 2 gold, 3 silver and 13
bronze medals (Individual and Relay events combined).
Please note that Appendix 2 of this document provides the complete set of results for the
Interschool Sports events for the month of August.

For us, parents’ opinions, views and ideas matter and it really is important for us to
receive constructive feedback from the parent body in our pursuit towards continuous
improvement. The school strongly believes that parents and guardians are important
partners in every child’s education and their journey to success in life. It is important for
every parent to have a forum where they can discuss their thoughts and concerns. The
Parent Advisory Committee [PAC] at Indus which was set up 10 years ago allows just
that. The PAC is involved in all spheres of school life and has grade wise yahoo groups
set up, which all parents are encouraged to be a part of.
At Indus, we prepare students for success after they leave school. To be successful in our
endeavour, we will continue to identify a list of 21st century skills and teaching practices
required. These are a combination of specific skills and expertise students are expected
to master as they enter the global world. These include, but are not limited to creative
and critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration, as well as
several types of literacies.
It is our pleasure to work with you and provide our students a world class education in
an environment rich with activities for all to enjoy and challenge themselves. We look
forward to a successful academic session at Indus International School, Bangalore.
Warm Regards,
Sarojini Rao
Principal
Indus International School, Bangalore
