This is a Workplace Reform and the role replaces a Deputy Principal with a more senior position, allowing me to free up some time for important work on the strategic direction of the school, and the development of a Master Plan for our community over the next five years. Ms Fountaine introduces herself in the following article, and I say that in just two weeks she has already made herself at home and begun to work with the three Deputy Principals and 13 Heads of Department to continue the good work they have achieved over the past two years. Our NAPLAN results, which were published earlier this week, show continued improvement in Numeracy, and a very pleasing gain in Spelling. This is the first time we have been able to see continued growth from our own Year 7 cohort, through to their Year 9 results. There has been a small relative gain in some areas over the previous year’s results, but this is not a direct comparison of the same students’ results. There is always a story behind any data, and @ISH we are able to tell that story very effectively because of the relationships our teachers have established with their students and their families. It’s all part of the partnership we have here in our community. I am currently reading a book called “Simple Thinking” by Richard Gerver. Gerver is a world renowned educational speaker who has worked for a number of governments as a consultant, and who has walked the walk as a school principal. He doesn’t just suggest theoretical solutions; his message is grounded in practice. He makes the point that often the word “community” is used in place of the word “society”, and I would agree with him. Society’s expectations are different to a community’s however, and in our case, when I use the word “community” I am very deliberately talking about the people who choose to attend this school, and their families. I am also referring to those others in the local area who support the school; whether this support is in the sponsorship of a program, or the volunteering of a skill. Support also comes from those local shops, including the whole of Brassall Shopping Centre and Riverlink, whose tenants have united in their acknowledgement that school-aged children should be at school between 8.30 and 3.00. Consequently, they will not serve them unless they are accompanied by an adult ad have a leave pass form the school. This is the clear distinction between a community in particular and society in general. Our expectations are necessarily higher, so that our graduates are successful in gaining employment or further education so that they can influence society when they take their place in their community later in life. Managing upwards is a skill which I still have to fully develop. But it involves positioning our school in the community in such a way that it is looked upon as a school of first choice. Our results speak for themselves and slowly society will benefit from our community’s involvement. That’s the power of the partnership you have helped create here @ISH. You will find plenty of evidence to support my belief that we are changing our society, through our community, in the pages which follow. Simon Riley Principal

What is your favourite food? Steak!

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, wherewould you go? New York

What quote do you live your life by? “If you don’t stand forsomething you’ll fall for anything”

What is the best piece of advice you have received? It was from Peta Weightman! She told me in my first term herethat the kids at this school will just see me as someone who isgoing to be in their life for a short space of time as so many ofthem have had several different teachers in one year. Peta toldme that after a term they’d get used to me and see me as asource of stability in their life…she was so right.

SHINING STARS

Name: Kiko Manu

Graduated at ISHS: 2015

Current Occupation: Panel Beater andcurrently plays for Canterbury Bulldogs

What journey did you take, to becomewhere you are now?

I left my home in New Zealand, also my family and friends tocome over to another country for the first time ever. Had nofamily here, was lucky enough to have my best friend over herewith me and stayed with him and his family. It was tough for mehaving to change my ways just to fit in to a new environmentand house. Had a lot of downfalls during my time here butwith the support of Lee and the coaching staff and friends, Imanaged to get through and graduate. I was part of a few thatwas invited to trial out for Met West, me being the person I wasI was very complacent and didn't put in as much effort thinkingI was already in. Well I wasn't and I didn't get picked. That nightI went home thinking it was all over, was actually thinking of justcoming back home. I was that cut but I didn't let that stop meso I just kept doing what I was doing but made sure that withwhatever I did, I took something out of it and gave 100%.

What are your greatest achievements?

U/20s Holden Cup Canterbury Bulldogs

Fondest memory high school? Just having fun with the boysand playing footy

What advice would of you give current students? Hard workbeats talent. I've seen so much talent go to waste because theydidn't want to put in the hard work.

Future dreams? Debut for an NRL team and play at least 100+games and to invest in a building and run my own Mechanicand smash repair Workshop.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE COVER FORSTUDENTS

Some school activities and physical education, particularlycontact sports, carry inherent risks of injury.

Parents are advised that the Department of Education andTraining does not have Student Accident Insurance cover forstudents. Therefore, if your child is injured at school as a resultof an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs, are the responsibility of the child, parent or caregiver. Some incidental medical costs may becovered by Medicare. If parents have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered through the private healthinsurance. Any other costs would be borne by the parents.

Student Accident Insurance is an insurance policy that payscertain benefits in certain circumstances should your child havean accident. It is a personal decision for parents as to the typesand levels of private insurance they arrange to cover their childfor any accidental injury that may occur. Parents should contacttheir insurer or an approved Australian insurance broker if theychoose to take out student personal accident insurance coverfor their child.
