It has a role to play in society in exercising the ministry of charity and advocang for jusce and peace, but that must never be seen as its reason for being. From the Principal’s desk… Welcome to Week 5. It was a very significant weekend for our Year 6 students this past weekend,

with the Sacrament of Confirmation the focus. It was very nice to be among the parishioners on

Saturday night to witness our students receive the sacrament. The reverence and maturity on

display was a credit to the students. Congratulations.

Gospel and Reflection: Mark 16:15-20

Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them, ‘Go out to the

whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who

believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will

be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with

believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift

of tongues; they will pick up deadly snakes in their hands, and be

unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands

on the sick, who will recover.’ And so the Lord Jesus, after he had

spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while

they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the

signs that accompanied it.

Reflection - In the encyclical Deus Caritas Est Pope Benedict XVI describes the nature of the Church: “The Church's deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word

of God (kerygma-martyria), celebrating the sacraments (leitourgia), and exercising the ministry of

charity (diakonia). These duties presuppose each other and are inseparable.”

People – including Catholics – expect a lot of the Church. It has a role to play in society in exercising

the ministry of charity and advocating for justice and peace, but that must never be seen as its

reason for being. If the Church does not proclaim the gospel and celebrate the sacraments then it

cannot fulfil the mission which Christ gave it, and it just becomes another social service

organization.

Jesus told the Eleven to proclaim the Good News to all creation, and to baptise. The proclamation of the word and the cele-

bration of the sacraments are an essential part of the life of the Christian community. Both are for the Christian community,

but not only for them. These events must also draw others into the life of Christ. That has become the hard part, perhaps be-

cause sometimes we are too comfortable doing things just for ourselves without that missionary edge.

Everything we do in our parishes and dioceses must both nourish the believers and attract others to Christ. We must sing and

preach and welcome people as if every one of them was not yet baptised because we can never be sure who is in that

category.

We all have this responsibility, and we need to talk about how to do together

and individually. We may have to consider radical ways of being missionary

rather than comfortable ways. (Bishops Council)

Coming Up this Week: Yet another exciting week lays ahead for the staff and

students of SJP. This week a number of our students will be opening the final

day of the Catholic School Principals Association NSW Conference with a Lit-

urgy. I was able to view their talents at the ‘dress rehearsal’ and I know they will do SJP proud on the day. A big thank you to

Mr. Schwager and Mrs. Dunn for their dedicated work in preparing the Liturgy.

Tomorrow evening is our next P&F meeting. I was unable to attend the last meeting, and I am looking forward to catching up

with everyone at the meeting. I know you will be made feel very welcome.

This Wednesday we have our energetic Kindergarten students heading off to the Zoo. I am sure they will have a wonderful

time.

Reminder.

I would like to remind all of our community that there is a procedure that applies when entering the school. Anyone

wishing to enter the school must enter via the gate near the Library after signing in at the front office. We are very

fortunate to have a supportive community, however, to maximize safety, signing in is required, this includes reading

helpers, collecting children early for appointments etc. Thank you for your support.

God Bless and have a wonderful Week

Anthony O’Leary.

Sacrament of Confirmation

We rejoiced with our Year 6 students on the weekend as they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

May the Holy Spirit be their guide and helper throughout their lives and may their families experience

God’s gracious love in the midst of our St Brigid’s community.

Bishop’s Visit

(Confirmation) and our Year 3 Students (First Eucharist) . We look forward to his visit.

This Friday Morning, students from our school will be leading the Morning Liturgy on the final day of the

Association of Catholic Schools Principals State Conference. A reminder to parents that children need to

be dropped off at 8am in Carrington Avenue, behind the DRTCC, and will return to school by bus.

Around the Classrooms Year 2 Aboriginal Studies.

Over the past couple of weeks, Year 2 has had a visit from Mrs. Smith to their classrooms.

Year 2 had been looking at Celebrations in class. Mrs. Smith came and spoke about the different

ways Aboriginal People celebrate. She brought a Didgeridoo and clap sticks, and told how women

shouldn’t play the didge. Some of us had a go at keeping the beat with the clap sticks and some

of the boys had a go at the Didge. We all enjoyed learning how the Aboriginal people celebrate.

Canteen has changed its brand of pop-top juice to Berri. Berri pop-tops are 250mls compared to the old brand being 200ml. They are the same price of $2. The down side is that orange-passion fruit flavour is no longer available . The Slush Puppie machine is finally going again too, just what the children need, an icy cold drink at the moment.

DUBBO CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS DEBATING COMPETITION

Round 1 was contested today Monday 18th of May, here at St John’s. The topic was “That Advertising is a

Menace”. Our opposition from St Laurence’s certainly made us work hard to think on our feet.

In the Pool A debate we were the Affirmative and came away with a narrow win.

For Pool B we were the Negative and lost a tightly contested debate.

Thank you to St Laurence’s, Mrs. Harvey and Ms. Hargreaves for making the competition interesting. Also a big

thank you to Mrs. Maggie Dunn for stepping in as the adjudicator. Your experience and professionalism is

much appreciated. Also thanks to our Year 6 aide Deep for assisting Mrs. Dunn

Pool A members are: Brianna Kierath, Julia Dickerson, Hunter Asimus, and Lara Isbester.

Pool B members are: Jessica McCarthy, Beth Clarke, Lachlan Lawson, Lachlan O’Malley, and Ruva Mutero

Both teams did a fantastic job with their first formal debate and they should be very proud of themselves.
