Rosehill College Gateway Programme Applications for 2018Applications are now open for our 2018 Gateway Programme. The programme at Rosehill College applies to senior students returning in 2018 as Year 12 or 13 students.

A number of students have put their names down for consideration and applications are currently open until school returns in term 1, 2018.

Gateway is a Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) funded programme designed to strengthen the pathways for senior students (Y12/13) with the transition from school into the workplace. The Programme Coordinator invites students to apply, then interviews each student to ascertain career options for each individual. If accepted for Gateway, the Coordinator finds students work experience in a variety of careers in the community. There is a focus on students looking at transitioning into either a trade or directly into employment after leaving school. The programme delivers Gateway students additional work related courses and training with NCEA credits to help them toward their chosen goals. Gateway assists in making good work connections for students and in some situations work placements may lead on to either employment or apprenticeship opportunities. Gateway has limited places so if you would like to be considered, pick up an application from Mrs Dyer in the Gateway Office at the back of the School Library or click this shortcut to be taken to the form. All applicants will need to have acceptable attendance at school and HOH needs to give approval.

If any parents or families of Rosehill College have a business that would be a suitable workplace learning experience for a Rosehill Student please contact the Gateway Coordinator, Mrs Nicki Dyer on 295 0661 ext 847 or email [email protected]

Each week, every Year 9 and 10 student is gauged against our school values by the teachers of English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and PE. Students who achieve the maximum possible marks for five weeks gain a Bronze Award. By gaining another five weeks of maximum values, students move from Bronze to Silver and so on.

The Manaakitanga awards indicate that these students are being consistently Respectful, Responsible and Caring - or in other words are showing Manaakitanga.

Water poloThe Rosehill water polo team played 2 games this Sunday. Game 1 was vs Lobstars who are currently leading the competition. Thanks to some excellent defensive work and goalie saves, the team were able to score 3 goals against a well drilled team, final score 11-3 (Goals scored by Quinn & Lyle. In Game 2 we played HS Hydras and William Chaffe was able to keep us on the scoreboard, the team going down by 9-1.

After the game we received some positive feedback from our opposition players who say they really enjoy playing Rosehill as they always try hard and showed great sportsmanship - what great feedback for a great team!

Junior Volleyball Boys and GirlsThis term has been great for our Junior Volleyball teams, they have done well in the division 2 Counties Manukau competition this term.

Our girls had their semi- final last Thursday afternoon at Mangere College, winning one of their games against James Cook and winning by default against Manurewa Green; the two schools ranked first and second in the Division 2 draw. The girls started training earlier in term 3 which gave them the advantage to pull together and work hard as a team which placed them 1st in the Division 2 Competition. They have played extremely well in their Grade.

The Boys team also did very well in the semi- final winning their game last Thursday afternoon against the top Manurewa A team. The boys also won their second game by default at Tangaroa College. This meant that they also placed 1st in the Division 2 grade. These boys have been training hard for this competition and are playing at a senior grade level already. Awesome work from both of the junior team’s you have done Rosehill College and your coaches proud. A big thank you to

our wonderful coaches Jordan Salanoa who has been training our girl’s team this year, Tianna Eliu and Jordan Eliu for coaching our junior boy’s team. The coaches have been putting their time & effort in to training these teams and teaching both teams the value of teamwork, the sport, and helping out with transport to and from the games. As Manager for the Rosehill College Volleyball teams I am looking forward to seeing more potential players next year coming through our junior teams for the growth of volleyball at Rosehill College.

Summer Reading Over the summer months, learners lose ground academically because they often associate reading with school – therefore it is work and they do not want to do it. One of the key findings of the research report “School achievement: Why summer matters” was that:

The summer learning effect was confirmed as a major barrier to ongoing achievement: the gains made over the school year disappeared.

Report authors: Stuart McNaughton, Rebecca Jesson, Tone Kolose and Sophie Kercher (2012) Teaching and Learning Research Initiative, University of Auckland.

To support student reading over the summer the Rosehill College Library is allowing students to issue books for their summer holiday reading. Students:• Must be returning in 2018• Can take up to 15 books• Can issue books from 7th December• Can stockpile books before the issue date

Students can collect the summer borrowing form from the library. The signed form, which can be found at the end of this newsletter, is to be returned to the Library.
