COLLEGE P A L A E R E N T I NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dux Ceremony, Rostrevor College Dear College Community Recently we held our annual Dux Assembly where we celebrated the academic achievements of the class of 2014. Our results last year speak for themselves with 24% of our Year 12 cohort achieving ATAR scores above 90 and 48% attaining an ATAR above 80. These results, when combined with 13 Merits and a Governor’s Commendation are impressive. Prooving a Rostrevor education opens up endless opportunities. Mahendra Chitrarasu, the Dux of the College was awarded an ATAR of 99.9. Having served as Deputy Head Prefect in 2014, he was held in especially high regard by both staff and students alike and his pleasant demeanour coupled with his natural leadership capabilities make him a real asset to our community. Mahendra’s academic prowess is evidenced by his prolific academic accolades, including Dux of Year 9, 10 and 11. He is the unrivalled recipient of Palma Merenti awards and his academic excellence across all subject areas is admired by and serves as inspiration for his peers. Mahendra was awarded Merits in Psychology, Biology & Chemistry along with a Governor’s Commendation. I congratulate the Senior class of 2014 and celebrate the great results that they have accomplished. May they enter the next stage of their lives with the same level of determination and perseverance which led to such excellent results. May they be a source of inspiration to every student that, through self-discipline and commitment, obstacles can be overcome, and, with a tenacious spirit, we can achieve our personal best. Congratulations to Tom Basso in Year 9, who was nominated for and won the Rising Star award at the Arch D Radio awards held on Friday, 6 February at Sacred Heart College. This formal event was attended by Archbishop Philip Wilson. Tom was nominated from a large group of students from several schools who have written and then co-hosted an on- air session with James Meston for Arch D radio on Life FM. Tom was fortunate enough to be involved in two programs over the past 12 months and greatly enjoyed the experience. Tom was very honoured to receive the award and gave an acceptance speech that included thanking Rostrevor College for the opportunity to be involved. I think it is impressive that Tom has been acknowledged for his skills in this area at such a young age and the College can be proud of the manner in which he has conducted himself in this extra-curricular activity. It is impressive to see students representing the College so well across a wide and diverse range of pursuits in the community. recently our College was visited by members of the edmund rice education Australia executive. our College Board met with the executive Director, Dr Wayne tinsey, National Director for education, mr Peter Leuenberger, and National Director for Stewardship and resourcing, mr Geoff Doyle. We were also joined by the Director of regional Support (Western region), mr terry roberts, and the regional Finance manager (Western region), mr mark Bianchini. It was a great reminder that we are part of a national network of schools that share a common mission. Gaining a greater understanding of the bigger picture of edmund rice education Australia and its future directions was most useful. It was also a great opportunity to discuss how rostrevor can contribute to the strategic directions and identity at a national level as well as discuss rostrevor’s future directions.

Year 10 Father/Male Mentor & Son Days

Alongside the retreats, we also run the Year 10 Father/male mentor & Son Days. this event was the brain child of Paul Belton and has been offered in a number of different forms over the past six years. We were delighted with the attendance and the wonderful feedback we received.

one father wrote:

The father and son day I attended on the 17th February what a fantastic day. You and your staff can be very proud you are true leaders in Boys’ Education.

I am very close to my son but this day improved our relationship. The ‘Walk and Talk’ activity, the team-building events and the fitness sessions were all great bonding moments.

Please thank all the staff involved. It was a great day! This is one of the reasons why Rostrevor is a leader in Boys’ Education and I am very thankful for your commitment.

Another:

Please pass on my thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the Father/Mentor and Son day.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day and spending quality time with my son. The activities were great fun and I feel that the “Walk & Talk” and “reflection” sessions made a positive impact on the relationship I have with my son. Once again thank you to the school and all involved to make days like these happen.

Holistic Education

At rostrevor, our aim is to provide what we refer to in educational circles as a holistic education. this is an education (in its broadest sense) which caters for the intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual growth of each individual.

mariam Sambe, researcher in the area of education from Canada states that: “holistic education is based on the principle that students find identity and purpose in life by connecting to the community, nature, and humanitarian values. the purpose of holistic education is not only to prepare students for academic success, but to also enable them to learn the challenges of living as a whole (learning about themselves, about healthy relationships, about social responsibility, compassion, etc)”.

I believe that the purpose of holistic education is to prepare our young men to meet the challenges of academics as well as living in such a complex world. At rostrevor, we believe that it is important for young people to learn:

•about themselves and others,

•about healthy relationships and behaviours,

•social and emotional development,

•spiritual development,

• resilience, and

• to see beauty, have awe, and appreciate some sense of ‘truths’.

our three pillars, academic, spiritual and co-curricular certainly do suggest we offer a broad range of activities and experiences which enable our young men to experience and participate in a holistic education.

Year 10 Retreats

the Year 10 retreat day organised and run by Br John Ahern and his team is an integral part of the spirituality dimension of the College. Boys spend time reflecting on their life, reflecting on who is their neighbour, how we should treat each other and again, given we have a significant intake of boarders, experience the opportunity to mix with different people outside of their own normal circle of friends. they are challenged to accept the increased demands of the senior years, especially in terms of taking responsibility for their actions.

Year 8 Camps

the Year 8 Camps serve a variety of purposes and were extremely successful. It is important in particular that new students be given the opportunity to mix with a significant cross-section of the year level and through the team-building activities, make new friendships outside of the classroom. the camps also provide the opportunity for the boys to work together to experience some physical challenges. these are all elements of an important “rite of Passage” into their secondary years.

New Parent Welcome Drinks

thank you to everyone who attended our New Parent Welcome Drinks, hosted by the P&F Committee. It was a wonderful evening and we were very pleased that so many families were able to join us.

Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you as parents for your support in our endeavour to provide a holistic education for your sons by ensuring that they attend such events. I would also like to express my gratitude to our wonderful staff who are always willing to support such events by supervising, participating, organising activities and much, much more.

God bless.

the traditional approach to school discipline asks three questions in response to wrongdoing:

•What happened?

•Who’s to blame? and

•What do they deserve?

this traditional approach leaves those who have been most affected by the wrongful behaviour without a voice, and without their needs being addressed as part of the ‘solution.’ It also does not effectively challenge the wrongdoer to be accountable to those he has harmed.

the restorative approach, on the other hand, starts from a different set of questions:

•What happened?

•Who’s been harmed? and

•What needs to happen to repair some of that harm?

In this approach to dealing with wrongdoing, the focus is on the harm that has been done and the obligation this brings on the part of those responsible to ‘right the wrong’ as much as possible. It is an approach that seeks to develop in the wrongdoer an understanding of the breadth and depth of the harm their behaviour has caused to others so that they can best try to make amends to those most affected. In this way, it is an educative approach.

this does not imply that there are not any consequences issued for misbehaviour as a result of a student’s poor choice at rostrevor College; there most certainly are. When a consequence is issued (for either ‘Learning’ and/or ‘Behavioural’ reasons), we also expect staff to engage in a pastoral conversation with the student as a way of promoting better relationships.

For more information regarding rostrevor College’s restorative Justice Practices and Student Personal responsibility Protocols, please refer to pages 21-23 of the Student Planner.

“When you study great teachers... you will learn much more from their caring and hard work than from their style.”

― William GlasserWhether it was hosting a session at the Parent Information evening, supervising an activity on the Father/male mentor and Son Day or just casually chatting with parents at the New Parent evening, I have had the opportunity to communicate and reinforce the College’s ‘Student Pastoral Care’ aims and philosophy . As a community, we strive to provide a safe and supportive environment for all our students. Students who develop meaningful connections with their school community are more motivated to achieve academically and less inclined to engage in anti-social behaviour than students who feel disconnected from it.

At the core of our pastoral approach is the belief that building caring partnerships will enhance the right of all members of the community to be respected; that is, the student’s right to learn and the teacher’s right to teach are paramount.

When rights are breached, ‘restorative Justice’ principles and practices are deployed to help give students the opportunity to understand how their behaviour affects others in the College community and directly involves them in a process to repair the harm caused.

essentially, restorative Justice is about the four r’s:

•taking personal Responsibility (acknowledging your behaviours have breached the rights of others);

•mutual participation towards Reconciliation (bringing together affected parties);

•Choosing more appropriate behaviours – Rehabilitation; and

•repairing Relationships by ‘making things right’.

Evan Pezos Student Wellbeing

Last week saw a flurry of activity at the College with the Year 10 retreats as well as the Father/male mentor and Son days. the retreat is centred on the story of the Good Samaritan. the emphasis is about “how I treat my Neighbour”, our neighbour is of course everybody. this led to some interesting sharing around how we interact with each other at school as well as at home. the day began with a game and then a getting to know you exercise. After a recess break the gospel story of the Good Samaritan was mimed and the groups had to work out what the story was about. After lunch, the students rotated through three activities, a reconciliation liturgy, a meditation and a story with a message about God. I found all the group to be open and willing to be involved in the various activities. It was a privilege to work with some young men and their fathers/mentors after school to have them share about some of the important issues in their lives.

Ash Wednesday

on Ash Wednesday two ceremonies were held, one for Year 7 - 12 students, in the Valley and the second for the Junior Years in the Chapel. each person received the Ashes as a symbol of our need to repent and was challenged to do something special for Lent. this can be in the form of giving up something we like or doing a special activity to help another. Project Compassion was introduced and we will collect money for this cause between now and easter. As we begin our journey towards easter, let us all aim to become better people during this time of preparation.

Lent reminds us that sometimes repentance is required to recognize the Kairos moments in our lives. often times we must repent – change our path – turn away from the things that deaden us and turn toward that which brings us fuller life. our brokenness can keep us from seeing just how much God is active in our lives every single day; Jesus in the Gospel today announces that now is the time – the Kairos – to repent, open our eyes, and respond to God’s invitation to new and renewed life.

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

Last tuesday was a busy day for the Junior boys and their families. We were once again very well supported as we provided a pancake breakfast for boys, siblings and parents/caregivers in the courtyard area. Shrove tuesday is significant in the Catholic and other Churches because as followers of Jesus we make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs we need to right, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth we especially need to ask God’s help in dealing with.

Following this day, of course, is the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday. We joined the Principal, mr Simon Dash and our Assistant Principal religious Identity and mission, Br John Ahern in the St Joseph’s College Chapel for our annual Ash Wednesday Liturgy and focused on two important words – that our commitment during Lent is a ‘personal’ one with our God and that it is a sign of ‘sacrifice’ much like the young men and women who fought at Anzac Cove 100 years ago this year. It was a wonderful and respectful celebration of our Faith. thank you to Br Ahern for leading us in the Chapel.

SRC

After a pancake breakfast on tuesday we then had a Junior Campus Assembly in the Callan hall. the focus of this gathering was to recognize those young men within our junior community who, in one sense, will also make a sacrifice with their time. We publicly acknowledged our Student representative Committee members by presenting them with their badges. these young men will become the conduit for student voice in Semester one of this year as they learn about representing the opinions and concerns of their own community. An SrC is designed to; share decisions on school matters, build relationships and community spirit, respond to student concerns and needs and, ultimately, to bring about change. In providing this opportunity we hope to engage the boys in making better decisions as, quite often, students know things that others don’t and they see the world through their own eyes.

Are you bored after school? Why not join us in OSHC. Over the past few weeks we have been focusing on how we can make ourselves and others feel safe, secure, supported and happy. Every one of us carries around an invisible bucket that we fill each day with our thoughts. The happier the thoughts the fuller the bucket. The boys have been looking at ways to make themselves and others happier. We made our own bucket and wrote happy inclusive messages to put in it. The idea for this came from a book called “Have you filled a bucket Today?” A daily guide to daily happiness for Kids. By doing this it is hoped that the emotional wellbeing of the child is being considered.

Please remember that there isn’t a teacher on duty until 8.15am. Junior students at school before that time, for safety reasons, will need to come to oShC.

cO-curricular news

this is the first time in my eight years at rostrevor where we have experienced extreme heat for three weeks in a row and it appears that we are stuck in a cycle where the hottest day of the week is Saturday. I am hopeful that we will experience more favourable conditions this weekend.

this year I have trialled having all maps for home and away fixtures available on the rostrevor College website and this appears to be working effectively. Families are also reminded to check for cancellations on the rostrevor website by following the links from Boys education to Co-Curricular.

1st XI Cricket

rostrevor 3/212 from 35 overs (ayden McGregor-baptista 119no, edward Greenslade 32no, Hugh walker 25no)

Defeated CBC 7/80 from 35 overs (Hugh walker 2/10, Lochlan roberts 1/4, dylan Smith 1/7, Murphy Short 1/8)

this was a very good result, played in tough conditions with the heat. After winning the toss, we got off to a steady start, reaching 1/27 from our first 10 overs. From this point on, our batsmen took full control. ayden McGregor-baptista batted superbly and was merciless on anything loose. ed Greenslade was solid and supported McGregor-baptista as the boys piled on the runs. With 6 overs to go, both boys were retired and Hugh walker really stood up and pushed the ball around into the gaps as well as being able to hit the bad ball to the boundary. he and anthony Onofrio put on a useful partnership of 32 to allow us to finish on 3/212. McGregor-baptista’s 119no was from just 80 balls including 11x4’s and 6x6’s.

In reply, we managed to take a couple of early wickets which put CBC on the back foot and effectively put an end to the run chase. their batsmen showed plenty of determination in the middle and latter overs and despite some good bowling from all of our bowlers, the 10 wickets was just beyond us on a very good pitch. walker followed up his runs with the bat with 2 valuable wickets. Murphy Short, playing only his second game bowled with genuine pace for a Year 10 and he supported the opening bowlers Lochlan roberts and dylan Smith well.

Swimming

Swim results from Wednesday 18th February were as follows:

Pembroke - 285

rostrevor - 273

Pulteney - 226

Norwood-morialta - 149

Considering that rostrevor had to forfeit the U/15 and U/16 medley relay events, our overall performance was quite creditable. Best individual performances came from Lawson Nitschke and Hamish Shute who won all of their events. Hamish’s efforts were particularly impressive when you consider that he is an eleven year old competing in the Under 14 age group.

Well done to the all the Year 7’s who were called upon to step up in the absence of the Year 8’s who were on camp.

I would like to congratulate the following students and old Scholars for their achievements:

LiverPOOL FC MeeT aNd GreeT

on thursday February 19th, the College was lucky enough to be invited to attend a ‘meet and Greet’ session with Liverpool FC legend and Club Ambassador, robbie Fowler. representatives of Liverpool FC were in Adelaide to promote the exhibition game in July against Adelaide United at the Adelaide oval.

After a thorough student selection process, 17 one-eyed Liverpool fans were chosen to come to the oval and meet robbie as well as ask him questions about the life of a professional soccer player. All of the boys had shirts and scarves signed and photographs with robbie. this was a fantastic opportunity for all the students and staff involved and all of the boys came away from the experience with a strong desire to pursue their dreams in all walks of life, not just sport. many of these boys will have the opportunity to see Liverpool play in the flesh for the first time in July.

on behalf of the students involved, a huge thank you must go to mr matthew Selby, a current parent and Australasian representative of Liverpool FC as well as miss Karen rimmer who organised the bulk of the behind the scenes work prior to the visit.
