It isn’t just coloring and playtime. These students are introduced to an exciting world of learning. Our Kindergarten students have been so busy this year. Recently, the Kindergarten class explored the amazing world of seeds. As part of their study, they started a seed collection. The seeds could not be purchased. They had to be found outside or in the food eaten by the students. Kindergarten collected over 50 seed specimens! There were seeds of all different sizes and colors. They separated their collection into gymnosperms, seeds without fruit encasing them, and angiosperms, seeds encased in fruit. The biggest seed they collected was a mango seed, and the smallest was a carrot seed! They continued their study by dissecting seeds to find the cotyledon (seed coat and plant embryo). Once they knew about seeds, they conducted some experiments. Macey and Cassidy wondered how salt would affect seed growth. Callan and Peter added oil instead of water to their plant. Jeremiah and Morgan microwaved their seed, and Evie and Victoria put their seed in a dark closet. The class (and Miss Vervoordt) were extremely surprised when the seed in the dark grew the fastest and tallest! Don’t plants need sunlight? What was happening? GOD BLESS, CLASS of 2016!

LEARNING IS SO MUCH FUN IN KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten is a wonderful learning experience for the younger students.

ART AT R.C.S Every year, on the same night as the Spring Concert , there is an art contest at Ringwood Christian School. During the school year grades 1 - 8 do a variety of art projects which are graded on effort, attitude and following directions. However, in the art contest, these projects are judged solely for their artistic merit. Three projects from each class are selected and displayed throughout the school. Then three judges who have either an artistic background or work in the art field, evaluate these works of art, giving out 1

st - 3

rd place ribbons. This is an

opportunity for students with artistic ability to be recognized. This year our judges, all alumni, were Christopher Guerrero, Vanessa Donnamaria, and Bobby Rolando. Congratulations to all who received ribbons this year for their fine works of art!

GRADE 1 - Madisan Shattuck (Class of 2004) taught our first graders a little American Sign Language (ASL). They learned the alphabet, dog, best friend, cookie, cake and more! The students finger spelled their own names.

GRADE 6 - Mrs. McLaughlin took her sixth grade music class to the C. F. Martin Guitar Factory in Nazareth, PA. They had a guided tour of the many stations required to build an acoustical guitar. Although technology has advanced over the century, many parts of these guitars require personalized care and attention. After the tour was completed, the students enjoyed looking through the museum

GRADE 4 - Miss Brown’s class had such a great time planning a surprise party for their teacher.

GRADE 5 - Mrs. Carlsen’s class had a great trip to Camp Shiloh where they participated in a hike, high ropes course, low ropes course and team building activities with debriefings and devotions. It was a fun-filled day with plenty of learning about God’s creation.

YO-YO ASSEMBLY This month we had the opportunity to enjoy an assembly that used the yo-yo to teach some exciting concepts. The tricks were lots of fun and pretty amazing at times. It wasn’t all about tricks though. There was a great lesson in the “School is Cool” assembly. Throughout the program we heard that “School is Cool” for at least four reasons. Mixing a magic trick and a yoyo skill,, we learned first that school is cool because we learn. Second, “School is Cool” because we listen and learn from so many different people. Third, “School is Cool” because we laugh. Although school is plenty of work, it can also be fun as we work together. Lastly, we saw

that “School is Cool” because we make lasting relationships. Not only do we make lasting relationships with other students, we also make them with teachers.

NEW ART OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS

This year we had the opportunity to participate in the Ringwood Manor Artist Association’s Young Artist Expo. This exhibition is open to 4

th through

12th graders from Northern NJ. Artwork is displayed in the Barn Gallery in

Ringwood State Park for the month of May. Outstanding artwork created by our 4

th through 8

th graders was selected to compete in this art contest. Of the

ten students’ projects that were submitted, five received awards. This is significant considering that they were competing with over 120 other pieces of art! Congratulations to those students who participated in this special event.

Time To Say Good-Bye Saying good-bye is always a hard thing and that is especially true when it involves special people like Mrs. Bradon and Mrs. Gunther. Mrs. Gunther has added a great deal to our school in her two years as a middle school

teacher. We have appreciated her hard work with the Science team and with all of her classes. Although we will miss her greatly, she is leaving for such a wonderful reason. Mr. and Mrs. Gunther will become parents for the first time this November. Mrs. Bradon has been part of our faculty, teaching third grade, for the past 24 years. In addition to teaching, she has coached several sports, assisted with the Bible team, and been a faithful behind the scenes helper to all of us. Mr. and Mrs. Bradon are looking forward to retiring in Pennsylvania this summer.
