1 Newsletter No. 2 - Term 1 Week 2 8 February 2018 From the Principal…………. What a fantastic start to the year! We have had a great second week back at school. Our Foundation children are settling really well into the routines of school and our older children are all enjoying their new areas. The area outside the 5/6 rooms at the rear of the school will be landscaped, hopefully during this term. This will certainly make it a really terrific area for the children and one that can be continually developed as students suggest improvements for the area. New Staff for Kalinda Each year we grow in our school population and therefore we need new teachers for our school. This year we would like to welcome: Claire Pratt (Grade 3/4C) Jessica Swingler (Phys Ed) Paul Booth (Grade 5/6P) Emma Thomas (Grade 1/2E) Jessica White (LOTE Teacher Grade 5/6) and we also welcome back Stewart Clyde (Grade 3/4S). These staff are a welcome addition to our school as they bring a wealth of new experience and expertise and we are all enjoying working together for the benefit of our students. Save the DatesWe are having a Quality Beginnings open afternoon on Thursday, 15 th February where you will have the opportunity to spend some time in your child’s classroom, exploring what they have been working on during the first three weeks of the school year. This open afternoon will run from 3:30 until 4:15pm, then we would like to encourage you to bring something for an afternoon tea picnic to enjoy on the basketball courts with your children. We hope this might be an opportunity to meet the other children and families from your child’s grade. We would also like to encourage all our families to attend a Getting to Know You 3-Way Interview. This is an opportunity for you and your child to have a chat with the classroom teacher about individual learning needs, likes and dislikes and just generally get to know one another. Please log into Compass and book an appointment, as per the instruction sheet coming home with your child this afternoon. Interviews will be available Monday 19 th , Tuesday 20 th and Wednesday 21 st February. Erin Norman Assistant Principal

Welcome Hank!

At the beginning of every school year we love welcoming and getting to know new members in our Kalinda community. This year we are very excited to be welcoming the Heeps family and an extra special member, ‘Hank’. Hank is highly trained by Dogs for Kids with Disabilities (DKD) as an assistance dog to one of their children, Madison. Hank has the same level of training and access rights as a guide dog. Hank assists by helping Madison, who has a very rare genetic condition called Cri Du Chat Syndrome, to keep safe and to reach her full potential.

Hank wears a green jacket to indicate when he is working and it is best not to pat or talk to him when he's got his jacket on so he can remain focused on the job. Some of the ways he helps Maddy are to help to lower anxiety in busy environments, he assists Maddy with mobility and negotiating uneven surfaces or steps, he helps Maddy to stay on footpaths, avoiding the risk of her wandering onto the road. He does these things via a tether that is attached to Hanks jacket and to Maddy. Hank also helps Maddy by warning her mum and dad in advance if something is going to trigger anxiety in her, this helps her mum and dad to change the environment before it becomes negative for Maddy. Deep pressure therapy is another way he helps, which means he lays his head on her lap creating a sense of calm and comfort. The best part about Hank is that he helps the Heeps family to access the community safely. We would be very grateful if you could spend some time talking about Hank to you children. Hank will also be attending one of our school assemblies shortly, so all students will have the opportunity to meet him and learn a little more about his very import job.
