We held our faction Cross Country Carnival on the last day of Term 2. The effort put in by all of the students was fantastic to see, as was the behaviour of the children spectating. It was great to see so many parents who were able to attend and support the children and the school. A big thankyou to Mr Wall and the many other staff who helped to organise the day. The interschool carnival is on this Friday and I wish all the competitors well. Term 3 is always a busy term and this year is no exception. Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing s tudents for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and

academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students

Calista is excited to have secured funding for a new Science room this year. Work has already begun on this and the room will be ready to use at the beginning of the 2019 school year.

You may have seen Rajesh Veloo, our Student Social Worker around the school. We are very fortunate to have a partnership with the University of Western Australia in which we provide placements for their Master of Social Work students. Rajesh is available to help students and families, should they require social support or help in organising support within the community.

We have swimming lessons in the last two weeks and school camps on the last week of term. We have also set two dates for the Athletics Carnival. Thursday 6 th September is the planned date, with Friday 7th September being the alternate date if there is bad weather.

The Wakakirri Performing Arts Event takes place this Tuesday (7th August) at The Regal Theatre in Subiaco. Mrs de Souza, Miss Beynon, Mrs Thomas, Miss Jenkins, Mrs Cook and Miss Lam will be accompanying 44 students when they perform their item ‘Deep Blue Trash.’ I hope they have a fantastic time and I look forward to watching the performance.

The next parent assembly will be tomorrow (3rd August) and will be presented by the school’s performing arts students. Please come along and enjoy the entertainment. Craig Skinner PRINCIPAL

ABORIGINAL SEASONS Djilba Growing season (season of conception) August - September Djilba season is a time to look for the yellow and cream flowers starting on mass. Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two.

This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the South West. This starts with the yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. Also colours that are around at this time of year are creams, combined with some vivid and striking blues.

Traditionally, the main food sources included many of the land based grazing animals as in the season before. These included the Yongar (kangaroo), the Waitj (emu) and the Koomal (possum).

As the days start to warm up, we start to see and hear the first of the new borns with their proud parent out and about providing them food, guiding them through foraging task and protecting their family units from much bigger animals, including people.

The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the Koolbardi (Magpie) starts to ramp up and if watched closely, so to do the Djidi Djidi (Willy Wag Tails) and the Chuck-a-luck (Wattle Birds) to name a couple of others.

As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, we'll start to see the flower stalks of the Balgas (Grass Trees) emerging in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.
