From the Principal Year 12 Music HSC Performances On Tuesday evening our Year 12 students performed their HSC pieces magnificently to a very appreciative audience consisting of family, friends and staff. The audience was left astounded by both the variety and extraordinary quality of performances presented. We have long recognised each of the students for the wonderful contribution they have made to our band, vocal and musical programs, but to hear them as soloists, or accompanied by small ensembles, further emphasised their high level skills and abilities.  

In speaking with staff who had the task of assessing each student, they too were impressed by the levels of technical excellence demonstrated by each student. Thanks must go to Ms Lucienne Herft for the commitment that she displays on a daily basis to ensure that these, and in fact, all of her students have the best of opportunity to succeed.  

  

SES Cadet Program Graduation Tuesday also saw the graduation of our second group of SES Cadets after the successful completion of their 10 week training program. Throughout the program, students learned a range of skills including rescue technique, radio communication, first aid, team building and floodwater diversion. Many students participate in this program to further enhance their Duke of Edinburgh Award program and others complete it because of their wish to participate further in SES 

programs. Whatever the motivation, this is a wonderful program from which students learn so much.  

At the presentation, our students were complimented highly for their commitment, enthusiasm and dedication to the SES program. Special mention must be made of the program’s coordinator within the school, Ms Naomi Leviton, herself a member of the Manly SES and the team of volunteers from the Unit who gave freely of their time to ensure this program could run for our students.  

  

Stage 4 and 5 Languages Students Cook Up a Storm Our Stage 4 and 5 French language students experienced the opportunity to participate in French cooking lessons on Thursday. Throughout the day, groups of students came into the hall and were instructed on the practices of preparing authentic French crêpes. From preparing the mixture, through the cooking process and then in garnishing the completed crêpes, students engaged enthusiastically with our visiting French chef and his staff.  

Both visitors to the school, and our office staff, were tempted throughout the day with the aroma of freshly cooked crêpes and the students walking out of the hall with plates full of delight ready for consumption at recess and lunchtime. Thank you to Ms Spessot and the LOTE staff for organising this event.

From the Deputy Principals The Year 12 Music students performed in their final music concert before the HSC Trials to a very fortunate audience on Tuesday night. Congratulations and thank you to Muneki, Cathy, Luke, Justine, Jack, Connor, Alex, John, Katie, Yelson and Isabela, together with Caelan, Geoffrey and Nicholas from Freshwater Senior Campus, for sharing their outstanding musical talent and raising money for Headspace on the night. Thanks also to Mrs Herft for organising and supporting such a wonderful event.   At the Year 12 assembly on Tuesday, an overview of how student’s school based assessments and HSC examination marks are used to determine their HSC result for each course was provided. The most important message from any analysis of previous HSC results is for students to work together and assist each other in achieving their personal best both individually and as a whole year cohort.   This week, two of our talented students have been awarded prizes in external competitions. Koko (Year 12) won a prize for coming in the top 5 in the Headstart competition, usually entered into by university students, and Phoebe (Year 10) won the 2016 CSE Photo Competition!   Koko and Phoebe’s entries can been seen at:   https://headstart.nescafe.com.au/idea/artful‐homes‐for‐australias‐fauna/  and https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.611077405724016.1073741838.277198009111959&type=1&l=f859bc2f67 respectively.  Year 8 students enjoyed learning how to cook French crepes on Thursday this week. Please read the report of this worthwhile and enjoyable cultural event later in this newsletter for more details.  On Thursday this week Jacqui Pollock presented the second of her Level 2 Parent Coaching workshops to a group of parents from our school community. This workshop supports parents to transition out of “Parent as Manager” mode and into “Parent as Coach”. The group enjoyed a day of shared learning and experiences on Jacqui’s program “how to coach your teen in the game of life”. Topics covered included: how to really listen to your teens, new ways to make agreements, encouraging self‐study patterns and letting go of over control, having respectful challenging 

conversations, support vs. rescue, nurturing responsibility and independence.   Feedback from these workshops has been extremely positive, not only for Jacqui’s expertise and experience, but also for the difference the strategies have been making in family conversations and interactions. Parent comments included “The sessions with Jacqui and the group have prompted much thought. Our home has continued to prosper in a more harmonious way with much better two way communication.” Parents also enjoyed the opportunity to experience some of their child’s day at Manly, including ordering lunch from our wonderful canteen! Thank you to Jacqui for encouraging and enhancing the ongoing partnership between parents and teachers as we support the students at our school. Watch future newsletters for details about workshops planned for next term.  

Cath Whalan Deputy Principal Years 8, 10, 12 

‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐  ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Year 7 SRC leaders Max Oldham, Etienne Roumanoff, Daniel Shi, Eliza Lo Russo, Amelie Letchford and Kristin Withana were in charge of assembly this week and led a fun activity to promote Night of Stars. Student volunteers competed in a fashion parade challenge designing outfits made out of newspaper. Night of Stars is an event not to be missed and is on Friday 10 June.   

               

              

As part of the Crossroads program, all Year 11 students attend RYDA and participated in a number of workshops designed to change the way they view road safety and other risk taking behaviours. The workshops were interactive and students had the opportunity to experience braking at different speeds, devise safe travel strategies that will work for them and get tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. It is an important component of Crossroads, as many of our students will be getting their Provisional license over the next few months.

Golf Last Monday, a group of 11 students from Years 7‐10 competed in the inaugural NBSC Golf Championships at the Warringah Golf Course.  Our student’s played in a 4 – ball Ambrose competition against teams from Cromer High School, Mackellar Girls and Balgowlah Boys. There were some excellent strokes played with special mention to Hans Zheng and Alysha Airey, leading the charge for the Manly Selective Team. The team took home the silver medal narrowly missing out on the first place position by one stroke to 

Balgowlah Boys. Congratulations to all students involved for a great day on the course.

Squash 

On Friday 20 May, Anna Goodman of Year 10 and Sam Goodman, Year 8 competed in the Sydney North Squash Trials held at Thornleigh Squash Centre.  After the Round Robin competition, Anna was placed 1st in the Girls Division and Sam was placed 2nd in the Boys Division. Both students have been selected for the Sydney North Team who will compete in the CHS Squash Championships at Coffs Harbour on 28 – 30 June.

Language Report Oh là là! Vive les crêpes! Vive les Chefs et les sous chefs de Manly Selective!   Thursday 2 June the School Hall was the venue for a fantastic French incursion for all of Years 8, 9 and 10 French classes.  The students prepared, cooked, flipped and ate their delicious savoury and sweet creations.  A magnifique experience of French in action! Well done to all students. The visiting chef and sous chefs were very impressed

SES Cadets On Tuesday, our 2016 SES Cadets graduated from the program. The presentation was made by NSW SES Deputy Region Controller Barry Griffiths and attended by representatives from the SES Manly unit, the Manly Daily, parents, and the students of Years 7 and 9 

 This is the second cohort of State Emergency Service Cadets to graduate the Manly Selective SES Cadet Program. We are the only school on the Northern Beaches who currently run this program. Delivered during Sport time, the program focussed on developing student's understanding of the SES, safety management, teamwork and leadership, however due to the high calibre of students coming through our program, the program has been extended to also include basic first aid, triage, search, water diversion, radio communications and flood rescue skills.

Challenge!  Year 11 Japanese will be enjoying their prize ‘Pizza Party’ in the up‐coming weeks.  Results for the international Language Perfect will be announced soon! Well done to all students who participated.

 From the Archives Every week we will bring you an item from a past issue of the yearly Pines Magazine. We progress to 1989. Mr Shea, Mr Dawes and Mr Power are all on the staff list. Mr Bible is the Principal.  

By now the school is co‐educational. The student report from Louise Langhorne touches on the vexatious subject of school uniform.  

Uniform 89 In 1987, with Mr Bible’s arrival the uniform issue arose and a survey was taken to find out if people wanted to wear a school uniform. The majority said yes and a uniform was designed. This uniform was reinforced from the beginning of 1988. Ever since then, there has been arguments over why some people won’t wear it. This especially happens in winter.  In my opinion the reason people will not wear the uniform in winter is it is not designed for winter. The only thing you are allowed to wear over your shirt is a navy sloppy joe or a woollen jumper. A blazer or jacket of some sort should be designed into the part of the uniform. The most complaints though are over the girls not wearing the correct skirt or wearing something under it but if you ask yourself would you like to wear a cotton skirt and nylon stockings in winter? You probably would not, so why expect the girls of Manly High to wear it? The guys can wear jeans so why not the girls? What I propose the school does is introduce a winter skirt which is woollen or jeans, ski pants or anything that is warm. I know schools always introduce slacks but truly who wants to look like some seventies revivalist? Also they cannot expect us to wear uniform as the rooms are not heated.  What better time than now to introduce a warmer and more suitable uniform as next year we go selective. Which brings about another question to people’s lips – is our uniform going to change? Mr Matthews has said that it will not change except maybe the newly arrived Year 7s will wear a blazer. If Manly High made more allowances for winter then the school could look as prim and proper as any selective school. Isn’t the school in uniform in summer time? 

 

Upcoming Event ‘He Named Me Malala’ Film Screening Invitation  Malala Yousafzai is the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize Winner. At 15 years old, Malala was on her way home from school when a Taliban gunman boarded her bus, before shooting her in the head for daring to speak out about the importance of girls' education. Malala was gravely injured and spent months recovering in hospital. Now, she campaigns tirelessly around the world, demanding equal access to education for girls everywhere.   You are invited to come to the Staff Common Room at 6pm on Tuesday 7 June (Week 7) to watch an inspiring documentary about this amazing young person, ‘He Named Me Malala,’ by Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim. The film is rated PG for mild themes and some distressing images.  Parents and community members are welcome. Please bring a gold coin donation and money for cakes/tea (all proceeds are going to the Malala Fund). See flyer attached to the back of the newsletter.

Fencing 

 Time: Tuesday: 7.30 – 8.30am Thursday: 7.30 – 8.30am  The Fencing class is suitable for girls & boys of all ages.  Fencing teaches agility, coordination, speed and develops team work and self confidence, which are skills that can be transferred to any sport. Fencing is the “physical games of chess”.   Fencing Classes at Manly Selective Campus will introduce the weapon Sabre through games, drills, footwork and fighting.  Classes: minimum 6 and maximum 14.   

Term 3 dates: Tuesday   26 July – 13 September Thursday  28 July – 1 September     18 August – 15 September  Cost:  $145 – 8 weeks    1 session per week  All equipment that is needed will be provided.  Students should wear t‐shirts, tracksuit pants & trainers  Please bring a drink to class.

OS X Proxy Settings Without the proxy settings configured while connected to the school Wi-Fi, you won’t be able to connect to the internet. Also, you must have DHCP enabled in the TCP/IP Tab.

On Macs, Press F4 to open Launchpad. Select System Preferences > Network > With Wi-Fi selected > Advanced > Proxies tab.

Check Automatic Proxy Configuration. Enter in the URL field
