Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!
Student leaders – ‘find a friend seat’
As party of our relaunch of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and as part of our overall wellbeing focus for
our school, our student leaders came and met with me early this term with an initiative which reflected how
insightful our young leaders are at Wentworthville. They wanted an area in the playground where students who
couldn’t find a friend to play with during outside play sessions could go and find someone to play with. We
discussed the proposal and came up with the need to:
Find a place suitable in the playground and highly visible
Source a seat
Call it something and make it look inviting for students
Devise a student leader roster to support the initiative in the early days whilst students got used to how
the initiative would work.
Below are the action shots of the students painting the seat and preparing the area under our GA, Mr Wiles’
tuition. The finished product is wonderful and is located on the exterior wall of Mrs Eastwood’s classroom near
the upper COLA area. Well done students! I encourage you to talk with your children about the purple ‘find a
friend seat’ to support student wellbeing at WPS.

New Financial System
With the school in the final stages of cutting across to the new Departmental Financial and Wellbeing system
(‘Go Live’ day is Monday September 5) I would encourage all parents to cash this week (at the latest) any
refund cheques you may have received, as they will be considered stale cheques moving forward after this
week.
The Admin staff have been working extremely hard to ensure a smooth transition to the new system and I
would like to say thank you particularly to Mrs Deuis (our Admin Manager) and Mrs Sargent (our Admin
Officer) who have attended nearly 15 days of training in readiness for our new LMBR system. I appreciate all
their dedication and hard work.
I would ask everyone to be patient as we adjust to the new system of operation moving forward.
There will be no acceptance of payments by cash, cheque or EFTPOS from August 29 – September 9.
Payments for excursions etc can resume on Monday September 12, 2016.
Another implication is that the uniform shop cannot utilise the school’s EFTPOS machine in the new system
and as such will only be transacting with cash and cheques for the uniform shop. Please liaise with the uniform
shop if you have any queries.
Disco Thanks
The SRC led by Mrs Hall, Ms Zeidan and Mr Train conducted three disco
sessions for the students last Friday night. The children were excellently
behaved and looked like thy enjoyed the evening with funky dance moves!
I would like to thank all the teachers who gave up their time to support and
supervise your children at the Disco. Events like this cannot occur without the
goodwill of teachers. Thank you
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2017
Our Kindergarten 2017 planning is well underway. If you haven’t yet
enrolled your pre-schooler for Kindergarten 2017 at WPS, please collect
an enrolment form from the office.
You will need to bring with you originals of proof of residential address, birth certificate and immunisation
records and any visa paperwork (if required).
If you have friends living in the area who have children of school starting age you might like to let them know it
is time to sign up and enrol their children for school in 2017.
Wentworthville Public School turns 125!
Please join us on our celebration day on Thursday September 15 from 11.30am.
This is a great opportunity to celebrate 125 years of Public Education at WPS.
We hope you can join us. See details on flyer below.

Our 125th Celebration
As our big celebration on the Thursday 15th of September draws closer, teachers are reflecting on classes and
classrooms from our rich past. Classrooms certainly have changed over the years and will undoubtedly
continue to change to match our students’ needs.
The celebration will start at 11:30. There will be tours of school and
memorabilia including umbrellas, pens, key rings, wine coolers, travel mugs
and handballs available to purchase.
Thank you to everyone for letting people know about our celebration. We
have been receiving many inquiries and many of our wonderful graduates and parents of students will be in
attendance.

Mental health basics: Suggestions for families
Things can happen in children’s lives that make the risk of developing mental health problems more likely. It is
usually not possible to eliminate all the risk factors that affect your children, but there are things you can do to
reduce the impact of stress and help them build strengths for effective coping. Click on the below link for some
suggestions to support children’s resilience in the face of challenging circumstances.

Peer Support News
Week 6 – Our Rights In this week’s Peer Support session the children will be looking at rights, how
we as individuals have rights and so do other people. Activities will also
remind the children that although they may find themselves in difficult or
awkward positions, they still need to remember to do the right thing.
Discuss with your child a situation you were in that was potentially difficult or awkward and explain the decision
you made and why it was the right thing to do.
Week 8 – Making Choices During Peer Support this week, the children will be discussing and developing ways
to be responsible. The activities will reinforce the concept that being responsible is
doing what we say we will do and to the best of our ability.
This week help develop with your child 2-3 things they can do around the home to
show they are responsible ie: feed the dog each night, set the table at 6.30pm each
day.

Fruit & Veg Month 2016 – Vegetables are Funky!
Our school has registered for the fun of Fruit & Veg Month (www.fruitandvegmonth.com.au).
Fruit & Veg Month 2016 runs for the last 4 weeks of this term, Monday 29th August to Friday 23rd September.
The aim of Fruit & Veg Month is to encourage everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables and develop healthy
eating habits that last a lifetime.
Parent engagement is so important in the success of health promoting school programs such as Fruit & Veg
Month and Crunch & Sip.
As part of Fruit & Veg Month, students will be involved in various classroom and school based activities that
aim to encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.
If you require more information on what activities our school is doing for Fruit & Veg Month, please contact the
school or your child’s teacher.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Since the beginning of Term 2 we have been reintroducing Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) into our
educational programs at Wentworthville Public School. PBL supports students to display positive behaviours
by explicitly teaching the behavioural expectations of our school and maintaining consistent language across
the school community. Our PBL expectations fall under our 3 core values:
Be Safe,
Be Respectful, and
Be a Learner.
Since our reintroduction students have displayed an increased understanding of our school expectations and
have supported each other to provide a positive environment for all members of the community. Please have a
look at the teaching timeline on the next page to see what behaviours we will be focusing on across Term 3.
