From the Principal
Hello everyone as we move towards the end of a long and difficult term.
Congratulations to Year 12 on completing their Trial HSC examinations
and to those who submitted PIPs, SPG’s and Major Works - thank you
and congrat’s also – what a load off your mind – you can now
concentrate on what is left to prepare for. Today I looked at the
Aboriginal Studies Major Projects and what a diverse array of talent and
work developed, implemented and completed. All were beautiful in
their detail, but far more importantly, all were significant in the way the project has
helped these students connect to their culture and for two, particularly, to their
personal, family heritage. Regardless of the project, the diary accompanying certainly
told of facts and information learned and personal growth and development. I was
honoured to have been asked to view these works and am in awe of what was
presented.
A huge and hearty congratulations to Rebecca Hodgson for receiving a Highly
Commended in the Dame Marie Bashir Awards for Young Women, for service to her
school, wider community and involvement in community programs raising awareness
for women and for skills building. Some of our Year 12 students have also already
received Early Entry nominated acceptance to some university courses – this is quite
an achievement and we expect there to be more in the next few weeks.
Reports are now being written before the final fortnight of your time as a Year 12
student. This provides an excellent time to reflect on your educational journey. This
is also a great time for Year 11 to learn from all of you as they head into their final
exams before they commence their HSC campaign. The rest of the school are also in
peak assessment task submission mode with the end of term looming.
Sadly, there was a social media issue this week, worldwide, with a video posted of
an horrific event. Even worse, the video then became embedded in Tik Tok videos
of puppies and kittens so innocents would open those and then this other video
would pop in. We were very aware of this issue before school – our contact at Safe
on Social notified us by 7.30, though I had heard of it on the 7am radio network
news. Please find some information produced by our good friends at Safe on Social
![Page 2: From the Principal · Commended in the Dame Marie Bashir Awards for Young Women, for service to her school, wider community and involvement in community programs raising awareness](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051912/600294b0f6005e2bc87213cf/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
– especially for parents – on how to discuss these matters with your students as well
as information relating to how to discuss suicide with your students also. Good,
positive global citizenship and the responsible use of social media should be topics for
family discussion at the dinner table regularly.
At school we have had a successful Wear it Purple day; a
thoroughly enjoyable Indonesian Fashion Parade and a
terrific Sheep and Lamb show – all of which are covered
in the pages herein.
Until next time …….
Yours in Education
Kim Dixon

Year 10 Food Tech had their Practical Assessment Task for

Tips for Parents:
1. Be as involved in your child's online life as you are their offline life. To them, it is just "life" it is so blurred now there is no definition in the eyes of a young person.
2. Think about the age recommendations; it is not illegal for a child to use social media under the age of 13yrs with their parents' permission but think about what they are being exposed to. When we sign up to use apps, there are extensive terms and conditions of use. By ticking that box accepting them, you are signing a document that puts all the onus back on the user. You are signing up to be a data generating commodity, handing over personal information that can be sold
![Page 9: From the Principal · Commended in the Dame Marie Bashir Awards for Young Women, for service to her school, wider community and involvement in community programs raising awareness](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051912/600294b0f6005e2bc87213cf/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
and shared at the app's discretion. When you click "I agree" to most terms and conditions on social media platforms – you give it up by legal contract. And you probably didn't even read them. Most adults don't let alone a child.
Carnegie Mellon researchers estimated that for an average individual to read all the terms and conditions we should – it would take 76 days. So, you could legitimately argue the impossibility of this. Instagram's Terms and Conditions are over 5000 words long. Facebook sits at around 15,000. Tik Tok has a couple of pages; Google's terms and conditions are shorter than Facebook.
The practice of tech companies is to either: bombard you with so much detail, it is incredibly unrealistic to expect anyone ( especially a child) to read through them all, or to create brief terms and conditions that are deceptively simple, and in effect, sign away all rights to your content, and personal information by using vague legal speak. Some of the things they state are:
"you grant us a non-exclusive, transferrable, sub-licensable, royalty-free worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with the app."
Pictures, videos, posts, private messages, ANYTHING you have on your page is licensed to the app and can be sold or shared for media and marketing purposes.
It also includes:
All device information, your connections, what you share, and what you delete.
What groups you are members of and what you follow.
Your location and your IP address and the length of time you spend online.
How you bank, your billing details, delivery, and home address.
What your friends post about you.
Wi-Fi nearby and Bluetooth "handshakes."
Mobile towers nearby, mobile number, connections speeds
Your ISP and all the cookies that are stored on your device.
3. Use parental controls where possible to minimise exposure to harmful and distressing content.
4. Engage with them about their favourite social media app and get them to teach you about it so you can at least know the basics. Get them to show you how to block and report so you can be sure they know how to.
5. Put healthy boundaries in place. Don't ban them from their device if they forget to do a household chore or are naughty for something totally unrelated to their device. Do not take it off them if they speak up about something that has happened online because you are scared. This is the quickest way to drive all the conversations that you want to be having underground. Instead, if you have a healthy boundary like all devices are banned from the bathroom or bedroom. So then if they are caught with their device in either place, you ban them for a week. This way, they will learn that it is safe to speak up about what is going on online without punishment unless they break the rules about device use. Limit use to the family room with younger kids so that you can monitor them.

6. Be a good role model. Keep your screen time in check. There is no use banning the phones from bedrooms if you go to bed with yours each night, for example.

Write a Book in a Day
Sixty students from Bellingen High students took on the challenge of writing a book in
a day to help raise money for childhood cancer research. Our Library was the venue
and the students teamed up to produce 7 books – this involved planning, writing,
editing, illustrating and submission within the time limits of the competition.

Down at the Farm
Cattle Sale
Two Red Poll cows, Lilah and Kayla, and our bull Agent K have been transported to
the Dorrigo saleyards. It is assumed that Agent K is infertile and this is why he has been
sold. We are currently searching the Red Poll world for a new bull.
On Monday afternoon the Year 11 Primary Industries class tagged Agent K with a NLIS
tag and filled out the transfer paperwork.
A huge cattle truck arrived on Tuesday afternoon. The Year 10 Agriculture class loaded
him and the cows onto the truck. It was so sad seeing our much-loved animals leave
the school.
Tractor Training
Year 9 students have begun their tractor operating training course. All are doing well
and so far there have been no accidents, or even near misses. Enjoy the photos below.
Stage 2 of the tractor driving course will commence next week, with most students
receiving their licence early in Term 4.

Super Peas!
Wow, what a crop. This is possibly
the best pea crop in the history of
Bellingen High School. If the shows
were on, this crop would win
Champion Pea Crop of the World!
Well done, Year 10 students.
Chicken Chat
One hundred eggs are due to hatch in week 10. Everyone is hoping for lots of fluffy
Silver Pencil Wyandotte chickens. The previously hatched chickens are all doing well
and much loved by the chicken club members.
Monstrous Mulberries
This year we are concentrating on
harvesting all products on the school farm,
so the students have really enjoyed
harvesting, judging, and eating many
mulberries. Next week we are going to learn
about value adding and turning the
mulberries into an expensive food product.
We are making organic free-range mulberry
conserve. Can’t wait to try it!
