From the Principal One day it’s STEAM Day and our children are solving problems and designing

materials to assist in the process and another day it’s Chinese Day and we are

enjoying lots of those nice things around Chinese culture in a school-wide

celebra"on. Today and tomorrow also sees our friends from Bunnings doing major

work on the Bush Tucker Track and frog pond in prepara"on for tomorrow

a&ernoon’s Busy Bee. If you have yet to see the magnificent signage going into the

area, it is worth coming along to the fun of the Busy Bee just to see it.

In keeping with the introduc"on of our Reconcilia"on Ac"on Plan, we are looking to

name each of our six buildings a&er one of the six Aboriginal seasons so that students

can easily remember and learn about these six seasons. If we do proceed it would

simply be a ma-er of each block having a dual language sign a-ached for

iden"fica"on.

Last week we competed successfully in the interschool athle"cs carnival and had a

number of outstanding compe"tors who were recognized with medals and many

more who gave their very best in individual and team games to represent their

school proudly. Not only do we present other schools with beau"ful surroundings

for the carnival but we also always demonstrate how teams should behave and

compete.

It is that "me of year when I call for parents to nominate for one of the 4 soon to be

vacated posi"ons on the School Board. The Board meets twice a term for about an

hour at a "me to ensure governance of the school is effec"ve and reviews new

policies, monitors our business plan and performs other func"ons to ensure that we

are mee"ng the needs of the Bateman community and the Educa"on Department. If

you wish to be considered for a posi"on on the Board, please email me before Friday

15 November and your name can be put forward for the community to vote on (if

there are more than 4 nominees).

With a dress-up parade part of tomorrow’s ac"vi"es it is probably a good "me for me

to let you know what sort of things we look for if we are picking a “winner”.

Whenever there is a parade where small prizes are to be given out our staff/judges

always look for costumes where a lot of student effort and crea"vity (and o&en a bit

of parent help) has been involved. We won’t be awarding any small prizes tomorrow

for commercial or exis"ng tradi"onal costume but instead be looking for students

who have understood or researched the costumes and have been crea"ve in making

their costume. The awarding of small prizes for parades is a long-standing Bateman

tradi"on but it may be something that we look at going into the future.

As we move towards a more paper-free environment in everything but the students’

school work, you will only receive an e-mailed report at the end of this year and soon

you will no"ce a change when you come to sign-in as we are replacing the old books

with an iPad sign in system which will be more efficient and user-friendly and is a

great ini"a"ve from our front office team.

With so many events over the coming weeks I hope to catch up with each of you

before the Sundowner and our end-of-year events.

Bateman Primary School, Bartling Crescent, Bateman WA 6150 T: 6258 6900 E: [email protected] www.batemanps.wa.edu.au

We are currently wai"ng for preliminary comment from the City of Melville and for some final approvals to be

completed before our new 2.1m garrison fencing can be put up across the front of the early childhood play area.

Once we have those in place builders are ready to construct the fence which will keep our children safe and allow

us to leave equipment out overnight and on weekends. This endeavor is jointly sponsored by the Educa"on

Department and your fantas"c P&C.

Apple Screen Time is a tool used to restrict the usage of an iPad. It has the ability to set iPad "me limits, specific

app "me limits, block apps, restrict web or internet usage and more. Parents are able to set up their child’s iPad

with these restric"ons using a separate passcode for access. We recommend that it be a separate passcode from

the one used to lock the iPad so that the children cannot access these restric"ons.

Up un"l now, our Zuludesk configura"on would previously reset any Apple Screen Time and parental controls upon

connec"ng to the school network with a BYOD iPad. We have now found a way to resolve this issue. From today,

any Screen Time seJngs that are set up on a BYOD iPad will remain even a&er it has been connected to the school

and also once it has been taken home again.

Due to the seJngs now being retained, any seJngs that are configured to restrict these iPads will also restrict its

usage at school. As such, we ask that parents be mindful when seJng up Apple Screen Time so that the iPads will

s"ll be able to be used for all class work. We do not recommend fully blocking web browsers such as Safari and

Chrome at home as it will impact on the iPad user’s learning at school. The iPads are frequently used for research

and other online learning tools such as Mathle"cs. We would suggest using Down"me (Found in the Apple Screen

Time parental seJngs). This will stop the iPad from being used at all during the nominated "mes.

If you have li-le to no experience with Apple Screen Time and would like to make use of it, we will be releasing a

basic tutorial on how to set it up and use it.

Parent Representa4ve Nomina4ons for School Board 2019-2020

We are seeking nomina"ons for the 4 parent posi"ons that will become vacant at the end of the year. The Board

meets about 6 "mes a year. Parent representa"ves input community perspec"ves and ensure strong governance

of the school.

If you wish to nominate for the posi"on of parent representa"ve for the 2 year term please e-mail

marc.locke-@educa"on.wa.edu.au by 3.00pm on Friday 15 November 2019. If we receive more than 4

nomina"ons an electronic vo"ng process will happen for all parents from Friday 22 November 2019.
