Again, another term has flown by and we are already half way through our 2019 school year. Of course, being busy makes it seem as if time is flying but we have not just been busy, we have been very productive.

Our students have completed all their assessments and report cards, emailed to parents/carers. Years 3 and 5 completed Naplan on-line and results will be known term 3. Our debating team is preparing for their next competition and have already won a debate against another school. Students involved C-Gen (Creative Generations) will be doing their final rehearsals in preparation for their performance in July. Years 4/56 participated in another successful sports gala day and we completed both Junior and Senior Athletics days. These are only a few of the things that we support our students in doing over and above our primary role of teaching and learning. I am happy with the collaborative work that our staff have undertaken to ensure all children get a quality education.

Thank you to those parents who have supported the work we do and speak so positively about our school. Please enjoy this time together and return safely next term.

Finally I have enclosed a photo of some surplus tables and chairs left over from our recent clean up of items that were no longer of any use to us. They have been donated to Capalaba Kids ELC. It is great to see they will be well used.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Reconciliation Assembly Last Tuesday 25 June, Coolnwynpin State School held its inaugural Reconciliation Assembly. It was a special occasion as we were joined by a group of women elders from Stradbroke Island. Our guest speaker was Mr Ken Munro [Community Liaison Officer - Yulu Burri - Ba] who spoke to the audience about the connection to country and the work of the Healing Foundation. Earlier, I had addressed the assembly to discuss the plight of the Stolen Genrations and the 2008 formal Apology . Following the assembly, the elders and a number of students placed their handprint onto the Reconciliation Mural. The weather was not great and as such not all students were able to place their handprint on the mural wall - this will be completed during Week 3 next Term as part of our NAIDOC celebrations. The placing of the Handprint is a symbolic gesture of : We show Respect, We share this Land, We walk togeth er , Hand in Hand.

FROM THE HEAD OF CURRICULUM Welcome to Week 10!

At Coolnwynpin State School, we believe if you read you will succeed. We teach a balanced, sequential and explicit approach to reading, which supports the diversity of readers within the classroom.

Each fortnight, I would like to highlight a new reading strategy for decoding and comprehension. This fortnight’s decoding strategy is ‘Chunky Monkey – Chunk the sounds you know (P-2)/ ‘Chunk’ (3-6) and the comprehension strategy is ‘Making Connections – Text to Self, Text to Text and Text to World’

HOLIDAY READING

To further support the amazing reading achievements of your children, it is important that they continue to engage in reading during the holidays. These experiences could include reading a book or magazine, following a recipe to make something, reading the newspaper to find out the latest football scores, completing some research on the internet. It does not matter what our child likes to read… what matters is that they are building on their reading and comprehension skills by continuing to engage in reading experiences.

HOME READING LOGS

Don’t forget the rewards on offer for nightly read-ing experiences! Expect to see certificates and prizes coming home this week!

READING VOLUNTEERS

We are looking for some volunteers to come and provide extra reading experiences for the students. If you have some free time and would love the opportunity to work with children to help them achieve their reading goals, please contact me at [email protected].

Making Connections

Decoding Strategy: Chunky Monkey – Chunk out the sounds you know/Chunk

This decoding strategy requires readers to look for chunks of sounds or small words within the main word that they

know.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please call into the school office.

FROM THE HEAD OF SPECIAL EDUCATION Thank you to the kind family who donated items to assist with the students. It is truly appreciated.

Our Readers’ Cup Team with Samantha Wheeler, the author Turtle Trackers.

Our Debating Team about to start their first debate.

Readers’ Cup On Thursday 13th June, our Readers’ Cup Team represented our school in the regional Reader’s Cup Competition held at Moreton Bay College. Readers’ Cup is a competition designed to promote the love of reading and to provide students with a great opportunity to be part of a school team. Our team of keen Year 6 readers included Sienna, Adria, Kayla, Gabrielle and Ella. The girls prepared themselves for this competi-tion by reading the five set novels (nearly 900 pages in total). The teams were required to answer five questions about each book. The questions were very complex and certainly showed the hard work that our students put in and showed how well prepared they were for the competition. Our team performed very well on the night competing against twenty-two schools from the Redlands region.

Well done team!

Debating Team Success Commencing in Term 1, six of our Year 6 students were selected to be involved in the Coolnwynpin Debating Program . Throughout this year, it has been wonderful to see how confident our debaters have become developing a structured argument and delivering a persuasive speech. Our Year 6 Debating Team competed in Round One of the Queensland Debating Union Competition on Wednesday 19th June. The topic for the debate was ‘that students should write reports on teachers.’ Our team spent three weeks working together preparing a very compelling case! Four of our debaters attended this first debate of the season - Adria (first speaker), Matilda (second speaker), Charlotte (third speaker) and Sammi as chairperson. Our opposition for this debate was St Luke’s from Capalaba. At the end of the debate, Coolnwynpin was declared the winner! A terrific result for our team! Congratulations for a job well done.

SPORTING SCHOOLS FUNDING – UPDATE! Here are some photos of 5B enjoying participating in their PE lesson with all of our new gymnastics equipment .

1A REPORT In 1A we have been very busy this term. We have been learning in maths about location and direction and we have loved exploring this topic using the bee bot. We practised using a map and grid and then

moved onto making mazes for our bee bots with paddle pop sticks. We had to input the directions into the bee bot to direct it through the maze without hitting the walls. We worked in teams and had a great time with this challenge

In English this term we have been learning about character descriptions and have been reading the book Tough Boris to do so. As Tough Boris is a pirate book it was only fitting that we had a pirate week with lots of literacy and maths activities that were all pirate themed. We also had a dress up afternoon where we did pirate activities and played dressed up as pirates. We had so much fun !

1B REPORT As we begin to wind down from another busy term we are still having fun and learning many different things. After learning all about farms, food and growing things in Design and Technology we decided to grow our own sprouts. These will be ready to take home in the coming days.

In science we have been busy learning about day and night, which is why we decided to do some art of our favourite nocturnal animal, the owl. And who can forget the athletics carnival, what fun!!

1C REPORT 1C have had a super productive term 2 and feel very proud of their achievements.

In Health, we learnt all about road safety and fire safety. We had the great privilege of having firefighters visiting all of us in year 1. They taught us all about safe and unsafe fires and what we need to do in an emergency. We were very excited when we got to spray water out of the heavy hoses.

In English, we learnt to write character descriptions and interview questions using a range of verbs, adverbs and adjectives. We really enjoyed pretending to be reporters asking characters from different books a range of interview questions.

At the end of our character description unit we had a missing Parrot fly in our classroom. He needed our help to get back to his owner Pirate Golden Tooth. We wrote questions to Peter Parrot to find out more information about him and where he came from. He responded to our questions through a series of letters. Then we created 'help needed' posters that we used as we went around the school requesting information from other classes about our Parrot. Once we discovered his home land we designed a pirate ship,

created a ship in our class and had a pirate day as we sailed to the Caribbean Seas to return him to his owner. Later we wrote a character description of Golden Tooth after his visit to our school. (A BIG THANK YOU to all 1C parents for making this day a great success. These days are not possible without your involvement)

Looking forward to seeing the great learning that will take place in Term 3.
